OMG! Thank you Wedonotsow. Flowers

I forgot why I came on this thread for. Off to read.

maggiso · 31/05/2016 20:39

That Hodor song is clearly sung to the song ( light my fire) by the Doors! Brilliant.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 31/05/2016 22:30

Is that fanfiction? Confused

WeDoNotSow · 01/06/2016 01:02

I suppose the song is fanfiction!
It's written and sung by the actor who played young Hodor.

The AERON chapter was read by GRRM and transcribed by fans and put up on t'interweb...

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 01/06/2016 10:29

Ohhh! I was wondering how someone who isn't GRRM would have it to put up on the internet. That makes sense!

TheNorthRemembers · 01/06/2016 12:04

No sign of Loras then in the excerpt. I was hoping he left Dragonstone, called their banners and was fighting the Ironborn by now.

Which reminds me. Why was Randyll Tarly, one of the greatest military commanders of our time, pottering about in Horn Hill in the show when the Tyrells took on the Faith?

WeDoNotSow · 01/06/2016 16:45

North I suppose because if he was fighting for his liege Lord then his Valyrian steel sword wouldn't have been handily lying around for Sam to steal...

TheNorthRemembers · 01/06/2016 17:48

Heeheee. True.

CoffeeAndOranges · 01/06/2016 19:03

Can I ask a question that might be stupid- I've not read the books and do struggle to understand all the intricacies of the plot sometimes!

Why was Jon killed/brought back, apart from to create the ultimate cliffhanger?! Does Melisandre think he's the true king and so had to bring him back? If so why is she just letting him decide what to do and not trying to seduce him and control him like she did with Gendry? And where is Gendry? Still rowing?! And does Jon have any special powers now he's all resurrected and that? If not he should do!

And the sooner Arya decides to return and be who she really is, the better!

RJnomore1 · 01/06/2016 19:20

I think the dying part was to free him from his nights watch oath - as a plot device it's a good one.

I'm sure there's more to come that I don't understand at all

Wolfcub · 01/06/2016 19:39

From a book reader/not book reader Benjen point dh has read the books and hadn't a clue it was Benjen. I've not read the books and was busy yelling Benjen at the telly from the second the rider rode into view. It was so obvious that the missing ranger beyond the wall would return.

WeDoNotSow · 01/06/2016 20:24

I don't think Coldhands is Benjen in the book though, is he?
I thought GRRM said he wasn't, and the line in the book the CoTF said Coldhands 'died long ago' or has 'been dead a long time' or something like that. Benjen hasn't been missing that long really, and as CoTF live longer than humans, for them to think something was long ago, for humans it must be really long ago...

WeDoNotSow · 01/06/2016 20:27

GRRM has also said (apparently said I should say) that while Hodors name does come from the phrase 'Hold the Door' in the books, the circumstances surrounding the reveal will be completely different in the book.
Although I'm enjoying the reveals in the show, I want the book!!

So the answers you seek are both fairly easy and incredibly unhelpful I'm afraid Coffee - the series has gone completely off book with Gendry - COMPLETELY none of that is in there. I think she does sacrifice a different bastard Edric Storm (?)
Gendry joins the Brotherhood and is still there as of Book 3.

As of the last published book Jon Snow lies stabbed in the snow - Stannis is still alive, but Melisandre has seen visions of Jon and of things related to Jon and has become drawn to the idea that he is "significant"

She is searching for Azor Ahai - the Prince that was promised who is the only warrior who can save them from another Long Night or end the Long Night if it starts. The Long Night is exactly what it sounds like, no daylight and the wights take over

CoffeeAndOranges · 02/06/2016 08:11

Thanks songbird that explains why Melisandre did it - seems she's going round making sure everyone who looks in any way Prince-like is safe! Given that much of the language surrounding her religion (and that of the Seven) is reminiscent of Christianity ('Lord of Light', all the attributes of the Seven, atoning for sins etc, maybe the actual 'saviour prince' will be someone seemingly insignificant and not very prince like. In biblical times many thought the Messiah would be a brave warrior, or a political leader to save the Jews from the Romans. What they got was a carpenter of dubious parentage! What will Melisandre get? Sam? Would fit the underdog hero trope like Sam Gamgee and Neville Longbottom, the one who isn't the main hero (Jon) but whose actions are crucial for saving mankind itself.

See, I can theorise too Grin

TheNorthRemembers · 02/06/2016 08:26

Coffee I like your theories. Being overlooked could fit Jon as well. We know he is important, but people in the books / show do not. Not even Varys and Littlefinger, and between them they know every gossip.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 02/06/2016 08:28

But melisandre's religion is not the seven. The faith of the seven is in the southern countries of westeros, the red God is from the countries in the east (essos?)

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 02/06/2016 08:29

Sorry I just read your post properly and I love your underdog theory!!

RJnomore1 · 02/06/2016 08:41

I'm still rooting for little baby Samuel bring the saviour. Maybe he bleeds on a white walker and because their blood is so linked it cures them?

Middleoftheroad · 02/06/2016 08:42

Talking of under dogs, is there any way Gendry could be the Prince who was promised then? He isn't a carpenter but he is a smith.

Or baby Sam? I agree that it may not be the obvious choice.

pyrowall · 02/06/2016 08:51

Right I've watched it again and one thing that's bugging me is the great sept scene.

Am I right in thinking that they've made the plaza below it much much bigger than it was? I don't remember it being like that for Cersies WOA - wasn't it a narrow street? A friend has just visited Dubrovnik and it deffo a narrow street IRL

Continuity errors like that get on my wick!

CoffeeAndOranges · 02/06/2016 09:17

Thanks LadyStark

Baby Sam would be another good saviour - insignificant baby, born outside of wedlock and of dubious parentage, of a people group considered lowly and unworthy...sounds ideal!!

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 02/06/2016 09:22

Isn't there something in the books about mance rayder's son being something special, hence why gilly is sent off to protect him? I really hated that story and I'm glad they abandoned it in the show

AgingJuvenileBinkyHuckaback · 02/06/2016 09:45

It's not so much that the son was particularly special, it's that because Mance was The King Beyond the Wall, it was felt that Melisandre might have her eyes on his child for a sacrifice.
