Ok, like our sister thread for those who have read the books, this is for discussion of Outlander Series 2 but for those who have not read the books and/or don't want any spoilers.

I've liked the Scotland part of the series generally but that episode just seemed like filler. Not quite as boring as the one in s1 just before Wentworth - with NO JAMIE - but not far off.

Drywhitethanks · 26/06/2016 22:10

Verbena what's Once Upon a Time like? Netflix or Amazon? Need a new series.

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 22:12

I'm really loving Once Upon a Time. Onto series 2 and almost finished it.
It's very cleverly written and must have been a massive challenge for the writers to link it all up into future episodes.

My DS and dd are watching it too and it's suitable for all ages really.

Cerseirys · 26/06/2016 22:19

OMG, here's what and sound like in real life!

ConfuciousSayWhat · 27/06/2016 14:58

Ooh I've posted over there but not read the books this is the thread for me!

I'm addicted even though the writing is abysmal Grin

ConfuciousSayWhat · 27/06/2016 15:00

I can't get my head round murtagh and dougal's real voices Grin

Drywhitethanks · 27/06/2016 19:34

Just looked at those interviews. Is G McTavish not a Scot? Hudyer you can tell us...is it just that he's lost his accent? He's v different IRL.
But Murtagh.....even though he has a different accent he is very Murtagh IRL isn't he?

I know we've discussed the sex at length, or lack if it.......I can understand what the production/cast are saying about showing it only if it's necessary to the plot, but they could show intimacy in not such a graphic way as in season 1 IYKWIM. Do think perhaps that's what's missing. Apart from the lovely Gaelic prayer, no words of love from Jamie at all which for me were far hotter than the sex scenes anyway well just a bit Grin

Also I've been wondering about France. There was such a build up about great new characters but the only ones who survived and have been important to plot development are Mary, Fergua nad BPC as far as I can see. What really was the point of France? Hmm..........apart from an escape after Wentworth I suppose.

hudyerwheesht · 27/06/2016 22:08

Yes GM is Scottish, born in Glasgow. I had to check after DH showed me the scene of him in Rambo playing a cockney, which I posted upthread somewhere(completely bizarre).

His earlier career was more Scottish roles in things like Taggart but his accent is definitely more muddled these days. The actor who plays Murtagh is English I think.

I agree about the lack of sex intimacy and about the lack of tenderness altogether. I feel like I'm almost tense with anticipation every time a scene where some romance might be possible. SO little focus on their relationship, as I've said before, it's become a sub plot rather than the main theme.

Like someone else said, I also felt I had to warn about the disappointing second season when recommending to a friend. And so far she is agreeing with me that the start of episode 1 was a massive spoiler and makes all the time spent on the storyline frustrating. Is is just me that feels like those parts drag?

Haven't recovered from the cockney accent Hudyer.....Murtagh is English, is his accent decent? Sounds great to me but then I totally bought Mrs Fitz!!

hudyerwheesht · 28/06/2016 07:34

Actually it took someone on here mentioning how bad Murtagh's accent was for me to notice - and then I couldn't stop noticing it!
Mrs Fitzgibbons, on the other hand, sounded awful - like a parody of a Scottish accent- from the first time she opened her mouth.

The thing is, even the Scottish actors have had to put on an accent, as it were,ie, a highland one, mostly.
There's an interesting video online about the different Scottish accents of Outlander, worth a look. I showed it to my DH to show how different they can be.

There was also apparently a lot of discussion about how BPC would sound, having spent a lot of time in Italy and France. Not much point in that kind of detail if you're just going to distract everyone with having him say "mark me" all the time.

Well to my Cornish ears the accents sound great. Would never have known Murtagh wasn't Scottish. I have heard GM talk in interviews so knew he didn't have the strong accent he has in the show.
Talking of accents, I love the way Jamie's accent gets so much stronger when he's annoyed or angry. SH does that brillantly.

hudyerwheesht · 28/06/2016 08:57

I know snozzle I've noticed that too, same with Dougal. I love an angry Dougal, used to love it when him and Collum (rip Sad) used to have a spat.

(You're from Cornwall ? Lovely part of the country. )

The accents aren't that bad, tbh, although they are not very Highland, except for Sam who does an amazing job, especially when you consider that he's from D&G. At least there aren't very many comedy Scots accents like you often get on the TV. There are a lot of good, strong g west coast/weegie accents in the series, but that's probably because there is a limited pool of Scottish actors.

Verbena37 · 28/06/2016 13:07

Murtagh's Scottish accent doesn't sound very Scottish to me at all actually. In fact, I think he keeps going into Northumberland every so often.
I like his spoken voice though....very gentle and soft.

I also really like Jenny's Scottish accent.....even though she's from NI, it's very good.

Lessstressedhemum · 28/06/2016 17:07

Murtaghs not very Scottish, but at least he's not a comedy turnGrin usually TV Scots accents make me howl! They are often embarrassing!

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 17:59

Lessstressed what's a D and G accent like? Softer?
Ned has a "posh Scot" accent I think. I have a posh friend from Aberdeen, she sounds like him.
Love angry Jamies voice and his Gaelic too.
BPC is a bit Italian lilt/English.....quite good .

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 18:00

TM/BJR/ Frank sound like Prince Charles...Eton accent, his own.

snozzlemaid · 28/06/2016 18:21

Yes hud. I'm from Cornwall, and very lucky to be able to watch Poldark filming each year (which is my other obsession).
Very sad I'm so far away from Scotland though. Would love to visit one day.

Lessstressedhemum · 28/06/2016 19:14

D&G can be very broad but quite harsh, nothing like a soft Highland accent, which is different again from Aberdonian. My brother, who lives in Aberdeen, calls d&g folk arse end teuchters, as opposed to Doric teuchters. Both accents as thick as each other Ned is quite posh Edinburgh, as he should be. He sounds like a lot of folk I went to uni with (the ones who weren't English) I love bill Paterson.
Sam Heughan doesn't have a very pronounced d&g accent in his normal voice. I doubt he would have got very far in theatre if he did. He does a lovely rural Highlands accent, although some of his gaelic is a wee bit different from I was taught. But then, that's very local as well.
Think Tearlach has a good kind of nondescript, posh, educated accent. Certainly not Scots, but then he'd never set foot here before the 45, but kind of non specific Europeanish.

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 20:00

Who is Tearlacy? Confused

Lessstressedhemum · 28/06/2016 20:36

Tearlach is the prince. He wasn't called BPC until much later. Tearlach is the Gaelic equivalent of Charles and is what the Jacobite's would have called him.

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 21:59

Interesting ....I'm learning a lot.

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 22:02

Jamie just has to kill BJR next week...if that man survives again I'll giv e up. Can't believe he survived the Highland cattle trampling/ stab to the goolies..........Grin

hudyerwheesht · 29/06/2016 09:19

That was my next question snozzle - Poldark is also my other obsession - now excuse me while I combust with envy.

OP posts:
hudyerwheesht · 29/06/2016 09:33

Teuchters!! Thank you lessstressed, haven't heard that for ages!

Think Tearlach has a good kind of nondescript, posh, educated accent. Certainly not Scots, but then he'd never set foot here before the 45, but kind of non specific Europeanish.

This was what I was talking about - I read an interview with the actor who said a lot of discussion had gone into what his accent should be like.

Bill Paterson has given Ned the perfect educated clipped Edinburgh accent, as per the character's occupation/background. Sounds a lot like my Dad's telephone voice. Grin

I agree that only SH sounds authentically Highlander. There's a particular soft, breathiness to certain enunciations that only he seems to have.
