Ok, like our sister thread for those who have read the books, this is for discussion of Outlander Series 2 but for those who have not read the books and/or don't want any spoilers.

The funny picture caption reviews are by Connie verzak, they come up if you google her name but there's not one for this week yet.

That episode was so great. I loved the Gaelic prayer scene- it was nice that they subtitled it - I don't think they've ever done that with Gaelic before. And Simon callow was so fabulously evil! Never was a head more deservedly lopped off.

hudyerwheesht · 20/06/2016 21:45

That's true Jane, they haven't ever subtitled the Gaelic before. I think I read or saw somewhere that they wanted the audience to feel the same alienation from not knowing what these people were saying so we only know as much as Claire does, via Jamie (apart from maybe a few Gaelic speakers who may happen to be watching)
Loved that bit.

I'm seeing Murtagh in a new light after he went all badass. That's some loyalty.

So, I’ve been thinking and - maybe some of the book-readers can help me here as I know it has been changed from DIA – there are some unresolved things in my head…

What’s happened to BJR? Is he still in France? Is he still going to somehow get together with Mary after all, and if so, how? She’s in Scotland under the care of the Frasers now…

There’s been very little mention of the whole maintaining-Frank’s-ancestry thing since they came back to Scotland. Are any of these things covered in the book?

Apologies for all the questions, I got to thinking about what is left to cover before the series ends (as I know Roger and Brianna make an appearance so it’s going to jump forward a big chunk – seems like there’s a lot to get through before it ends, as some people mentioned on the other thread.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/06/2016 11:50

Can't answer any of those questions really hud and it's very naughty of you to ask on this thread Grin

I think all your questions will be answered within the next couple of episodes.

What’s happened to BJR? Is he still in France? Is he still going to somehow get together with Mary after all, and if so, how? She’s in Scotland under the care of the Frasers now

All will be revealed...which is all I can say really. They still have quite a bit to fit in considering there's only two(?) episodes left.

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/06/2016 11:52

Thinking about it, I think Frank has been pushed to the back of Claire's mind, with all that she went through in France and with everything that's going on in Scotland. (Not a spoiler btw, that's just my personal opinion).

hudyerwheesht · 21/06/2016 12:40

Yes you're right hipho - I did mean to put in a disclaimer to say I didn't want/need specific details, just some confirmation of whether or not this would be covered off in the remaining episode and whether or not it differs in the book as I'm going to start reading it soon.

But I forgot to actually type that. Blush

I've totally missed what DIA stands for?

TheHiphopopotamus · 21/06/2016 14:46

DIA is Dragonfly In Amber, which is the second book in the Outlander series and what season 2 is based on.

Not to be confused with DOA which is The Drums Of Autumn, which is the 4th (?) book in the series Wink

Roobix04 · 21/06/2016 17:11

Jesus Dougal has certainly got balls of steel! Love them trying to puzzle out the letter."She's even spelt help wrong!"

Verbena37 · 23/06/2016 15:42

Loved the letter part too Roo.
Aha yes of course Hiphop, silly me.

hudyerwheesht · 24/06/2016 14:57

Does anyone know if the final will be 1 1/2 hours on Sunday, i.e. a double episode?

I thought I'd read that somewhere but then I've seen something else saying the final episode would be in July...

OP posts:
snozzlemaid · 24/06/2016 16:24

I think we've got 2 more episodes.
This Sunday will be the usual hour. Then I think they're missing the next weekend as its independance day in the US near then. (I think that was the reason?).
I'm sure the final episode is planned for 9th July - 10th for us in the UK. That one is 90 minutes.

hudyerwheesht · 24/06/2016 20:09

Bloody hell, how did I get this so wrong? I thought there was going to be 12 episodes and that the last was a double episode so I thought that was this Sunday!

OP posts:
snozzlemaid · 26/06/2016 09:35

Just watched episode 12. Things that stand out after one watch...
Great scene with Dougal & Colum. Very emotional.
Just when I thought I couldnt love Murtagh any more he surprises us by offering to marry Mary so she doesnt have to wed BJR. I adore him so much.
BJR when Alex dies. Wtf?! Jesus, he's so brutally sick.
Now got to wait 2 weeks for the final 90 minute episode.

Cerseirys · 26/06/2016 13:42

Bollocks! I'm away weekend after next so won't be able to watch the final episode til Monday Angry

hudyerwheesht · 26/06/2016 16:33

Everything that snozzle said! Especially BJR after Alex dies - just why? Is that something that happens in the book, if so, is the reason for it explained?

Although I'm glad that the questions around that storyline have now been answered, I.e. How Mary ended up with BJR. Now I can see why the book readers were all "don't worry it will be explained",etc.

I'm also away weekend after next so will have to wait until Monday night to watch the finale.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 26/06/2016 16:54

No, that doesn't happen in the book. It was kind of bizarre. We already know BJR is an abusive arsehole, without having to watch him beat up the corpse of his 'beloved' brother. Claire must be fucking insane if she thinks that was the best marriage Mary could make.

Also, hud I counted one 'Mark me!' this episode Grin

hudyerwheesht · 26/06/2016 19:29

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the "mark me" - I think I've developed a sense for when it's coming; every time I think he might be about to say it, he does.

So what the hell was the point of that scene after his brother died then? I can't think what they thought it added something.

Also, I didn't understand why Claire and Jamie were talking about killing BJR the next day if he survived Culloden - what was stopping them from finishing him off there and then, rather than subjecting poor Mary to him even for one night? Jamie gets his revenge, Mary spared but sorted financially as his widow, ancestry line unchanged. If they leave it until after Culloden Jamie might die first and BJR could survive, worst case scenario.

I'm aware that I'm massively overthinking this, but it was one of those HmmConfused moments.

TheHiphopopotamus · 26/06/2016 19:45

I think it's best if you don't think too hard about it. I'm kind of disillusioned with this series. It's not what I thought it was going be and that's taking into account the fact that I knew what was going to happen.

Not enough Jamie and Claire interaction in this series by a long shot. I said on the other thread, I won't be bothering to rewatch this season Sad

Drywhitethanks · 26/06/2016 20:07

About to watch episode 12.....haven't read thread, feel a bit nervous Sad
See you on the other side

AKAmyself · 26/06/2016 20:36

let us know what you thought, dry white. I'm with Hip, been growing more and more disappointed with the way they're missing the point of the whole series.

snozzlemaid · 26/06/2016 20:51

I agree.
I've just finished watching season 1 with dp, who really enjoyed it. We were about to start season 2 and I felt I had to warn him that it's not the same. I was sad to find myself saying that it wasn't as good. There have been moments of greatness and I have enjoyed it, but it's lost that spark, that whatever the first season had that makes me want to watch it over and over again.
I will continue to watch but think my expectations for future seasons will be lower.

Drywhitethanks · 26/06/2016 21:19

Well I liked it. It is a bit different from the book.

I think BJR marrying Mary is fine because Claire knows he's going to die.....and even if he doesn't remember his drown jewels are no longer functioning I suppose after that well placed stab by Jamie in the Bois de Boulogne have you all forgotten?

BJR punching his dead brother...hmm, frustration? Excessive CPR? Or just to remind us that even though he was kind to his brother he's still a psycho.

Loved Dougal and Callum's scene. Dougal actor is amazing....that speech is all in one take, fantastic acting.

Re J and C's intimacy. I know we all want a bit of sex but I think the intimacy and tenderness is still there....look at Jamie's face after they kiss before he goes on the raid....

Agree about Murtagh.....lovely man.

Lots of knees...even BPC has quite good knees and wears his red tartan Stuart? very well indeed. He actually has lovely eyes despite being a twit.

Am loving the mud, wind, rain....bleakness of Scotland.

Jamie is a clan leader...that's cool.

Jamie was looking great....leading his troops suits him.

Drywhitethanks · 26/06/2016 21:21

And when the series is over I have some child free holiday....I'm going to binge watch both series and see if it's better that way....

Verbena37 · 26/06/2016 21:32

For me, this was possibly the least exciting episode. I just felt it lacked oomph. I a,most fast forwarded the colum /Dougal bit although I was emptying the dishwasher at the time so wasn't 100% there anyway.

Hoping next episode is more exciting, although I'm pretty sure I'll be crying cause it's Culloden.
I'm binge watching Once Upon.a Time at the moment and now finding it much more exciting than OL sadly.
