Aye, Jamie told them a bit about it in a letter, but there wasn't any suggestion hat Brianna and rger had looked into it, I don't think. It's another thread left open.

snozzlemaid · 03/06/2016 21:24

High 5 AKA. We worked out the storyline!

pixieg1rl · 04/06/2016 21:59

This keeps dropping off my list, just place marking

AKAmyself · 05/06/2016 11:38

Just watched episode 9. It was overall EXCELLENT and really strong acting and characterisation throughout. Absolutely adored the confrontation with Dougal and I think we're going to get a very powerful climax towards the end of the series as a result. Claire arguing that her place was next to Jamie and his men in battle and not back at Lallybroch was nicely done. Jamie was awesome throughout and a true leader - MacDubh!

There are a couple of things that bothered me, though: the way they swapped the LJG scene on its heads, with Claire pretending to be a captive instead of Jamie "using" her. Disturbing as it is, I found that scene in the book really worked - Jamie the warrior is capable of a lot, and he will stop at almost nothing to defend his men, including using his wife! All's fair in love and war. He would of course be full of remorse afterwards, which I also thought important in the books... not to mention that scene sowed the seeds of his respect for Lord John (there was a beautiful line in Voyager, something about "you were ready to die to defend a lady's honour - my lady" which was very touching). I see the internet is generally very pleased with the choice to empower claire in that scene, and I get that - but for me it is as important to show's Jamie's dark side as it is to show how wonderful he is - a bit like the spanking in season one.

The other thing was more of a disappointment - I feel we were absolutely due a sex scene after he comes back from his commando raid, and in the books Jamie always makes the point that fighting makes him crazy horny - why oh why did he turn away??!?!

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/06/2016 11:51

I agree with most of what you've said aka Can't really argue about the Lord John stuff because I can't remember it any depth as I only skim read DIA. I thought this episode was a return to form and just highlighted what's been missing from the show by not being in Scotland.

The other thing was more of a disappointment - I feel we were absolutely due a sex scene

Also this!!!^ A thousand times over! The only thing I can think of why we haven't, is that the actors have had it written into their contracts that they aren't going to do it this season. It was such a massive part of S1, I've actually been a bit disappointed by the lack of it this season. How the hell Claire is going to pregnant with Brianna, I've no idea Hmm

AKAmyself · 05/06/2016 12:14

I've wondered about that Hip, however the sex in season one was so universally praised that it would seem very strange to avoid it completely!

AKAmyself · 05/06/2016 12:19

regardless, it's a crying shame. I thought the sex scenes in DIA were even better than in Outlander, what with war and danger encroaching in on them, they desperate;y needed their intimacy on a physical level

snozzlemaid · 05/06/2016 12:33

I'm glad it wasn't just me that had their hopes dashed with that sex-that-didn't-happen scene. In interviews they have both said that sex scenes have only been included to tell the story of their relationship and to drive the relationship forward. I think it was needed there to do just this.
I did enjoy seeing Jamie stand up to Dougal and becoming a leader.
Loved Rupert, Angus and Murtagh and just everything about them being back in Scotland.

Dollius01 · 05/06/2016 14:06

Advice please lassies! I am nearing the end of Drums of Autumn. Shall I bother carrying on to the next book? Only everyone says it is really boring...

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/06/2016 14:46

Is the next one The Fiery Cross, Doll?

That's the one that made me give up on them. It was tedious beyond belief (but that's just my opinion).

Dollius01 · 05/06/2016 14:56

Yes, think so. Hmmm

Lessstressedhemum · 05/06/2016 15:00

I quite like Fiery Cross, tbh. I would read it, if were you, but that's just me.

Dollius01 · 05/06/2016 15:53

Really? Oh good, think I will give it a whirl.

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/06/2016 16:04

Come back and let us know what you think of it Doll. Interested to hear other opinions. I personally couldn't get past 'The Gathering' bit, which takes up about a quarter of the novel.

How have you found the previous books? I prefer the series to the novels anyway, which is probably why I couldn't get on with it.

snozzlemaid · 05/06/2016 16:06

I'm just starting Drums of Autumn and will continue to read them all even though I've heard bad things about Fiery Cross.
I couldn't bear to know there's a story about Jamie and Claire out there that I haven't read.

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/06/2016 16:19

That's what I thought snozzle til I started Fiery Cross. But it made me want to murder Claire and put the story out of its misery. I tried twice to finish it and had to give up.

FWIW, I really liked Drums of Autumn and it was probably my favourite after the original one.

I know Pixie was reading TFC as well, and had some of the same problems I did with it. So if she's finished it, she might be able to say whether it was worth it?

For the record also, I'd just like to say I really wish DG hadn't moved the story to America. I think this season has shown us that the show works better when they're in Scotland so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out when they (tv) get that far.

Drywhitethanks · 05/06/2016 16:52

Marking place here too...just can't resist. Smile

Sunnymeg · 05/06/2016 18:13

Having read them all, I think The Fiery Cross is OK, but not as well paced as the first four books. In my opinion An Echo in the Bone is by far and away the worst of them, as nothing of any interest plot wise, happens for the first 600 pages and having waited for three years for it be published, it was such a let down.

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/06/2016 18:57

Glad you've said that meg I was thinking of skipping TFC and going on to the next books. I don't think I'll bother now Confused

Lessstressedhemum · 05/06/2016 19:38

Echo in the Bone was really slow at the start, but picked up towards the end. I think the later books get a bit bogged down in detail and description. Still love the overarching story, though.
I haven't seen this week's yet, I'm a lot disappointed that Claire is in charge of the John grey scene. That bit was pivotal to Jamie's character and to the future relationship between Jamie, John and Hal. As for them not having sex!!!! What is that all about? They always need physical intimacy before and after fighting. It helps them feel secure.

Cerseirys · 05/06/2016 21:13

Is next week the season finale?

Cerseirys · 05/06/2016 21:14

Ah no, just googled and there's 4 eps to go. July 2nd is the finale.

pixieg1rl · 06/06/2016 08:56

Finally got to watch last night and agree with everything said about Claire's part in the LJG scene and what it says about Jamie's character.

There's a hell of a lot more to fit into 4 episodes. As interesting as Claire's WW2 experience was I can't help thinking it's going to be at the expense of something else.

Sorry to report I'm no further on with Fiery Cross, I haven't even tried. I read all the other books at a pace of one a week (with a full time job etc). The fact I haven't been arsed to even look at this one in a month speaks volumes.

Lessstressedhemum · 06/06/2016 09:13

I don't see how that are going to fit everything that's left into 4 episodes, tbh. They must be leaving a lot out. They could have done with few more.

Sunnymeg · 06/06/2016 10:14

July 9th (10th for UK) is the finale, which is 90 minutes long. There is no new episode on the 2nd July, due to the holidays in the US.
