I've just had a hideous thought....
In the aftermath of Culloden, was the wearing of kilts banned?

No knees.

sobs

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 17:10

No knees Shock bloody hell.

On the ageing thing.........SE actually didn't really look 21/22 in S1 did he? And even if he had, did anyone believe he'd have still been a virgin? I doubt realism is that important in a show about a woman who travels through time via a big stone......and a bady who survives being trampled by a herd of highland cattle not that I'm obsessed with that or anything

Spoiler I tell you what's disappoint though, is that we don't see Jamie actually kill BJR......or perhaps I haven't got to that flash back yet in Voyager.......he just seems to regain consciousness with him dead on top of him........I feel cheated Sad

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 17:11

"Bady" not baby Grin

OopsThereGoMyTrousers · 12/07/2016 17:28

Even tho I knew what happened after they went to Boston, Claire's casusal "my late husband" about Frank still was a bit stark.

I also could have done with a lot less Gellis ' Gillian.
About 100% less in fact

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/07/2016 17:42

and even if he had, did anyone believe he'd have still been a virgin

Grin It explains all that in the book. Something about his dad telling him not to because reasons lessstressed will know Grin

Kilts were banned after Culloden so probably no knees in S3 but when they get to America, he starts wearing it again.

I think the Geilis stuff is probably important for later events. I actually kind of liked the character until she goes bonkers and I like her Danish/Scottish intonation or wherever it is she's from irl.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/07/2016 18:03

Geilis is important for later on. All tartan was outlawed after the Rising, so was the speaking of Gaelic and the bearing of any kind of arms. So no knees until season 4.

Jamie is a virgin because his dad told him he shouldn't dishonour a girl because the consequences for her would be much greater than those for him. He advised him that decent men chose to "abuse themselves" rather than a girl they weren't married to.
Jamie may or may not have killed Jack Randall. He doesn't remember. He comes to down a ditch on the battlefield with Black Jack dead on his legs. So, ironically, Jack Randal actually saved his live by cutting of the blood to his wounded leg and stopping him bleeding to death.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/07/2016 18:28

I wonder if they'll change the BJR thing in the show less. I think we might feel a bit short changed if they don't show Jamie killing him, like dry said.

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 19:08

I think I need "closure"" Hiphop Grin

Less you're amazing, the Outlander expert. V gallant of Brian. Love Jamie more now.

More things ive noticed second time round. We've discussed Jamie's hair at length. But you can tell when Cb's just had hers permed, at times it looks bonkers and then it calms down and is just beautifully wavy.

Also, someone mentioned the way Jamie gets off his horse. I'm no horsewoman, but do men normally dismount by flinging a leg forward? Or is this a Jamie thing? Hmm

Right, I'm bracing myself for that awful search episode where Claire dresses as a boy and sings ridiculous songs to make Jamie think her and Murtagh are crap travelling performers Hmm... Then Wentworth.....haven't been able to watch it, really awful. Then I'll be doing S2.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/07/2016 19:16

They made such a fuss about Jamie being the one to kill BJR and how the thought killing him was keeping Jamie going, in the show that I think he'll have to be the one to do it. (Unless Tobias Menzies isn't contracted to do next series. He's back in Game of Thrones now Grin).

Jamie was a lot more forgiving in the book. I may be wrong, but wasn't he at Mary and BJR wedding, such as it was. (Or have I made that up?)

Lessstressedhemum · 12/07/2016 19:31

Yes, he was at their wedding, albeit reluctantly and by a bit of deception. He even walk Black Jack back to the safety of his barracks when Alex died. Remember, Edinburgh was occupied by the Scots and the English were holed up in the castle, it wasn't really safe for Jack to be out and about. Jamie's sense of honour and his compassion allowed him to treat Jack kindly, then, but after he told Claire never to mention Frank to him again, because it was only for her/his sake that he hadn't already killed Jack Randall

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 19:45

Less are you DG? Wink

toadierocks · 12/07/2016 19:53

Good evening lassies :) I'm just loving this tread (well nearly as much as the series Grin ) Thought I'd jump on!

I've had a outlander S2 'hangover' for days now just wandering around thinking about it. I haven't read the books but I've found the audiobook for free of Voyager on tubeofyou so I'm going to get involved! I'm 8 months pregnant so perfect timing to put my feet up for 40+ hours of Scot :)

It made me very emotional the final of both seasons actually, I can blame this time round on the hormones. Hubby doesn't get it, he rolls his eyes at all :( personally I think he's missing out so that's why I've come and found you ladies :)

Lessstressedhemum · 12/07/2016 20:02

I wish I was DG, think of all the royalties! I'm just a sad old fan girl with a boring middle aged lifeSmile

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 20:07

Less Grin I think this might be my mid life crisis. Keep thinking how crazy it is that I'm watching it all again, that's 26hrs of my life.....and I'm a grown woman

snozzlemaid · 12/07/2016 20:10

Dry That was me who mentioned the way Jamie gets off his horse. I would love to know if it's Sam's preference or if someone else decided that Jamie would swing his leg forward.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/07/2016 20:13

less are you DG?

Christ, I bloody hope you're not, the way I've slagged her of on this thread Blush Although I stand by all my criticisms Grin

Welcome to the thread toadie we're all Outlander obsessed on here Grin I wonder how long this thread will run for though especially as Poldark starts in September

snozzlemaid · 12/07/2016 20:20

Anyone else see things in every day life that make them think of Outlander?
My work means I see data including children's names and today when dealing with one preschool they had a Breanna, a Tobias, a Jamie and a Faith!
Then a little while later I came across a child called Donas.
As if it's not in my mind enough. Couldn't get away from it.

bringonthetrumpets · 12/07/2016 20:56

Well snozz I have a coffee mug that says "Je suis pret (after my coffee)" that I love and use all the time... does that count? Grin

Welcome Toadie! My dh is very much the same (although I often catch him watching the show with me over his online chess game, ha!). I hope you love Voyager! It's my favorite after the 1st book.

IIRC, Voyager opens up with immediately after the Battle of Culloden and that's where we find out that BJR is dead... I'm very curious to see if the writers of the TV show are going to follow that same timeline and if it's going to take as long for Claire, Bri and Rodger to figure out exactly where Jamie ended up as the book.

Hip you should go check out the novella "Virgins". You can tell that Jamie definitely had it in-mind to get rid of the V status! Wink

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 20:57

I may have felt a bit giddy speaking to Ds's Scottish friend Blush......may have asked him if he was a Highlander Blush

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 21:22

And I stand behind a Scotsman in one of my gym classes.....couldn't possibly divulge what I about but it makes the class pass quickly Grin

AKAmyself · 12/07/2016 21:25

Can I just say I love this thread? I'm having a horrid time at work rn and outlander is all that keeps me going.

You are all right - no knees after culloden :(

I think i need to take a day off just so i can binge watch season 2. i'm pretty sure that with a bit of fast forwarding i would love it (almost) as much as season 1!

The Jamie part of Voyager (the cave, Aardsmuir, Culloden flashbacks, even the Geneva bit) are my absolute fave parts of the whole series so far and I'm ridiculously looking forward to them. Much less keen on the whole ship-hopping and Geillis nonsense.

You know, I was so vociferous about not wanting the characters to age, but I'm liking middle-aged Jamie so very much, that i'm now thrilled at how SH will portray him. I agree with whoever says they won't go heavy on makeup, I think the way they did Cait was perfect.

And speaking of ageing... I'm reading TFC and Jamie and Claire have just discovered the joys of titwanking Hmm

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/07/2016 21:39

I'm reading TFC and Jamie and Claire have just discovered the joys of titwanking

I'm not sure whether that has made me want to carry on with TFC or burn it in a fire Confused

AKAmyself · 12/07/2016 21:48

Sam Heughan is almost preternaturally handsome in this video:

THOSE EYES! THOSE LIPS!

bringonthetrumpets · 12/07/2016 21:56

Le sigh. He's so handsome.

Drywhitethanks · 12/07/2016 22:04

Aka sorry to hear about your work. I agree about the thread, love it too and hope we keep it going. I got to the reunion in Voyager, not to B and R arriving, but am starting again and trying not to skim this time. I agree the Jamie bits in the first half will be brilliant.

I have a few questions.

Claire has just told J that she can't have children (Lallybroch episode S1) but I'm sure she later knows that Frank can't father children, does he tell her when she goes back? Anyway she does get pregnant because she tells j on the boat and all the Faith stuff......

Also I wonder why DG made it 20yrs before they get back together? If Frank had died conveniently after 4/5yrs she could have taken a young B....is it something to do with the war that they had to wait so long?
