What's going on??? I am outside the UK and have to wait until tomorrow for the latest (last) episode. Has no-one watched it yet???

Dollius01 · 26/06/2016 15:55

BTW I know the answers to all those questions most recently posed if anyone wants to know - I have dipped in and out of Fiery Cross and the next one enough to know what happens.

Must say, I found Roger to be really very tiresome. He chases after Brianna, doing hard labour on a boat for months on end to do so. Then finds her, then she screams and shouts at him. Then he goes off to find some gems to get them home. Then gets sold as a slave by Jamie and endures all kinds of stuff at the hands of his owners. Then isn't sure he actually wants Brianna when he discovers she is soiled goods, but still comes trailing back to her. Continues to put up with Jamie's obnoxious behaviour towards him. All the while strumming away on his sad little guitar. So unsexy. Just grow a pair would you???

AKAmyself · 26/06/2016 16:08

So, have just watched episode 2 and I'm not happy...

spoilers

Look, it was a good episode. Collum and Alex dying were moving, Murtagh was amazing, and there was enough kneeporn and ridiculously doomed BPC to keep me happy. But only just.

because, because... i think they have forgotten what this show is actually about! And it is about Jamie and Claire, and the supernatural, super temporal, superhuman bond between them. They were barely in the same scene together, they barely touched. If this was the first episode of Outlander you ever watched, you wouldn't think they knew each other, let alone be married to each other. And these are the most moving, most touching parts of the whole Outlander series, how could they completely misread them?!? Therefore my emotional investment in the whole thing is seriously dwindling. Coming hot on the heels of 48 hours spent in non-stop panic and tears about Brexit, this is one disappointment I did not need .

Not to mention... the previews for episode 13 seem to suggest a hasty and fully-clothed goodbye at Craig Na Dun.

I'm not happy. Not happy at all.

Sunnymeg · 26/06/2016 16:27

I was hoping that it would be an improvement on episode 11, but didn't like it that much. I agree that it has strayed too far from the essence of the books. Perhaps if they had given us a 16 episode second series, then the story would be more intact. I thought that the scene with BJR after Alex has died was a complete lift from 'The Bridge 3' where Saga vents her frustration with her boss who is in a coma. I have a nasty feeling that the final episode will start with Claire in 1968 and spend the majority of the time with Brianna and Roger with just a quick flashback of Jamie and Claire before the Battle of Culmore.

Sunnymeg · 26/06/2016 16:28

Culmore obviously Culloden blooming auto correct

AKAmyself · 26/06/2016 16:43

that would really piss me off, Sunny. Something went terribly wrong with the show runners, I feel. They are so close to greatness and yet they seem unable to grasp it.

in happier news, i;m halfway through DOA and enjoying it again.

TheHiphopopotamus · 26/06/2016 16:50

I think you're probably right meg

And I agree (again!) with aka I've been sitting through all these stupid trying-to-change-the-future plots and a load of boring unnecessary bollocks* that could have been cut so they could concentrate on the Jamie/Claire relationship. I'm more than unhappy, I'm super pissed off Angry I'm not sure I'm going to bother rewatching this series. I'll just go back and rewatch S1 and bask in its lovely glow.

*not everything was unnecessary obviously, but a lot was.

snozzlemaid · 26/06/2016 18:59

Saw this, which is a very good write up about the lack of sex in season 2...
medium.com/@janetreynolds/what-happened-to-the-sex-in-outlander-season-two-f33bce3c1e80#.gyeuivu6a
Sums it up perfectly.
I really hope the show's writers etc are paying attention to what the fans are saying, but I've got a horrible feeling they'll stick with this format for the next series too.

AKAmyself · 26/06/2016 20:34

excellent article. Still, I despair. i'm almost certain we won't get sex-against-the-wall-as-the-redcoats-approach in the last episode :(

snozzlemaid · 26/06/2016 21:43

Thought we all need to look at this for a bit. Just to remember.

No sex against the wall? Shock.....,,sadly I agree Sad

pixieg1rl · 27/06/2016 10:38

I agree that the sex against the wall is looking less likely which is massively important to the parting of Jamie & Claire and the heart wrenching desperation of the situation. At this point it's going to be more like me yelling 'see ya' to DP as I leave to pop out to Sainsbury's.

Lessstressedhemum · 27/06/2016 12:09

I am far too heavily emotionally invested in this. The run up to Culloden slays me every time I read it. It's so heart wrenchingly desperate. If they don't give it enough time it'll be a travesty. The whole book leads up to that last night and morning. The "once more because I must" sex against the wall with the redcoats banging down the door is so important.
I haven't seen this week's yet, I'm still trying to steel myself for the pain. I don't think lack of sex is the same as lack of intimacy, just look at the way they look at one another and respond to each other's touch, but there is a place for showing it and, surely, now is the right time and place, especially if they are looking for the sex to help drive the plot.
As I said, far to heavily invested.

pixieg1rl · 27/06/2016 12:34

I'm now monumentally confused about the timeline in this episode. We are supposedly days/hours away from Culloden. I was under the impression that the last scene where Jamie & his men have marched 12 miles overnight was the night before Culloden. He now has to march 12 miles back, get Claire, get to the Craigh na Dun, get the final night in and then skip back to Inverness to rejoin the army.

Plus you know, they need to kill Dougal as well.

Hmm
Dollius01 · 27/06/2016 12:44

I actually quite liked this episode. The death scenes with Colum were very moving as well as his intellectual connection with Claire - which was always there from the beginning.

I liked the way he acknowledged the Claire-Jamie marriage as a force to be reckoned with.

Found snivelling Mary pretty insufferable though. Someone just put her out of her misery.

ConfuciousSayWhat · 27/06/2016 14:41

I find myself compelled to watch this programme every week without fail but the writing is so so dire! It's like a 6th former has written it, my sister tells me it's how the books are written too is that right?

Dollius01 · 27/06/2016 16:54

Well actually, speaking as someone who cannot abide low-brow literature, I have found the books to be surprisingly well written. I was expecting total trash, tbh, but they really are not.

bringonthetrumpets · 28/06/2016 21:01

Where have you lassies been all my life!? Seriously just stumbled onto this thread and I can assure you... I'm obsessed with all things Outlander (as my DH) Grin I read through all your posts. You are my people.

I've just decided not to watch the last two episodes along with the last one that's coming up so I can go back on the DVR and binge watch. The drip-feeding of the episodes that aren't really following the books closely were starting to get to me. I've read through all the books 1x and now are on round 2 most of the way through V. The first time through is intoxicating. The second time around I'm starting to find things like you've mentioned that just annoy me with Claire. Also can say that DOA is torture to get through. And poor Roger. That just gets me every time. All the crap that guy goes through is ridiculous. Love Young Ian, and especially love him after he leaves the Mohawk and we see how much he's changed and grown. His story is so complex. He's a great character.

I'm just so excited to be able to discuss all this! I have a friend who is reading DIA and it's so hard to not just start talking with her about everything because I don't want to spoil anything!

AKAmyself · 28/06/2016 21:07

Confucious, I have been avoiding the books for years on snobbery grounds, but actually, I love them. I think they're very well written, the first one shows the authors inexperience to an extent (she was University Physics professor, which i find very cool, actually!), especially in the dialogue (Christ H Roosevelt Christ, anyone?), but I'm finding it gets better and better. I'm now reading Drums of Autumn (nr 4) and i'm surprising myself by how much I like it.

also, one thing you wouldn't know from watching season 2.... Hmm... they have a lot of sex. a lot of excellent and excellently written sex. I'm seriously not being sniggery here, it's beautiful. I'd probably give these to my daughter to read in a couple years time (when she's a teenager) just to give her a positive image of what sex between people who love each other is like, if it weren't for all the rape nonsense that keeps cropping up. Plus, old (late 40s) people having sex would probably put her off it for life

AKAmyself · 28/06/2016 21:08

Hello bringonthetrumpets! welcome, you're in good company!

I'm reading DOA now. Liking it a lot more than i thought I would, actually. Now better hurry up and find out what happens to Roger before I accidentally spoil it for myself!

AKAmyself · 28/06/2016 21:09

Dollius, Mary is insufferable. explains a lot about how drippy Frank is, if you ask me - with all those drippy genes.

TheHiphopopotamus · 28/06/2016 21:20

Welcome to the thread bringonthetrumpets

I'm still intrigued as to what happens to poor old Rog too. Can someone in the know pm me? I'm never going to read past The Fiery Cross so I'm not bothered about spoilers.

I can't stand the Jesus H Roosevelt Christ thing. It doesn't flow properly in my ears humble opinion. Was this an actual saying during the war, does anyone know?

Drywhitethanks · 28/06/2016 22:14

Don't forget the sweepstake folks......

Number of:
"Jesus H R Christs" from Claire
"Mark mes" from BPC
And "Lord Brocturach (sp?)" from Jamie

Grin
TheHiphopopotamus · 28/06/2016 22:20

I think hud has a spreadsheet going on the other thread Grin

There was only one 'Mark me' last ep and BPC managed to get through a whole episode the week before without saying it at all Shock

I haven't heard Claire say her JHRC for a while, but she should definitely be marked down for her overuse of bitter cascara, an 18th Century wonder herb.

I need a life Blush But at least I'm not ranting at the producers on Twitter because Sophie Skelton doesn't have the correct length toenails (or something equally ridiculous) I suppose.

bringonthetrumpets · 28/06/2016 22:53

"JHRC" as Claire would say... my post should say "obsessed as my DH would say" Not sure how I managed to just forget the rest of the sentence Hmm

TheHiphopopotamus In the first book (before Claire goes through the stones) she is having tea with Frank and one of his contacts to talk about historical things and she mentions that a guy she was caring for came up with it so she started using it too. Not sure if it was actually used in RL though?

I agree AKA there is way way more sex in the books than the TV show portrays. It's shown on Starz here which is kind of known for its raunchy content on cable TV so I'm actually surprised there isn't more!
