Just saw the trailer for a new series of this - can't wait! Smile

I missed that, too, hairy.

diddl · 16/03/2016 07:35

I enjoyed it overall.

Did they suspect Darryl at all?

Would they have worked it out?

Did I miss Alison telling Catherine about being abused?

I think that that would have been a good scene rather than just info that Catherine was telling another character.

It suddenly seemed to jump on to "oh it must be one of us-it's John!"

Cooroo · 16/03/2016 07:45

Yes, Darryl was her child and brother.

ElementaryMyDear · 16/03/2016 07:47

There was a logic in the jump to suspecting John - i.e. the senior detective realising that the job done of getting rid of forensic evidence was so thorough that it looked as if it was someone who knew exactly what he was doing, leading on to him remembering that John had her details in the phone. But it was done really well, because at that stage he and the woman detective weren't really crediting it themselves and were half joking about it. The fact that it was coupled with a really big push on investigating Vicky's murder made it logical that the witnesses in the pub and the wife's boyfriend would come out of the woodwork, and indeed that Sean would come forward with what he knew.

ElementaryMyDear · 16/03/2016 07:48

I liked the way we were set up for thinking there could be a major shouting match with Frances, but what we got was a thoroughly professional and indeed compassionate conversation with her.

diddl · 16/03/2016 07:56

Yes, you're right Elementary

I think it all just happened so quickly within the episode for me!

BlueThursday · 16/03/2016 08:00

I can definitely say that 25 years later I would never have dreamed Raquelle Catherine (Shock) Wolstenhume was the grittiest thing on TV!

Gruach · 16/03/2016 08:04

Oh yes - was so excited last night (it was very night by the time iplayer did its stuff) I forgot to say how brilliant we all were for questioning the family relationship between Alison and Daryl. I originally thought they were siblings, we weren't quite convinced about them being mother and son ... Some extraordinary acting, spot on casting and subtle writing - there was a reason why we were confused!

I wonder if it would have been better to show the revelation about Alison's father? Perhaps not - it wasn't part of the investigation, more in parenthesis. But so cleverly introducing us to the possible theme of the next series.

diddl · 16/03/2016 08:23

Has it been explained why Claire & Rebecca took drugs?

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2016 08:37

What was that other detective thing with her off Last Tango, and Sanjeev Baskhar as her sidekick? Tom Courtenay was in it too.

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2016 08:38

We need more Claire. And more Anne.

Series 3 here we come :)

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 16/03/2016 08:40

Fantastic TV best thing by far on to for years has to win Baftas

fantastic acting especially Sarah Lancashire, not one actor was out of place, the directing the beauty and the starkness of the area, the script I was confused by the relationship of Dayrl and Alison, the ambiguous feelings Catherine has towards Ryan so many complex issues going on and I felt some sympathy towards John as we were reminded anyone is capable to doing something terrible

It's been a long time since we have had a such a good leading strong womans role as well written and acted as DCI Jane Tennison

Looking forward to series three

You can buy the series online at the BBC store (along with many other great series)

southeastdweller · 16/03/2016 08:43

Unforgotten was the recent detective drama Nicola Walker did on ITV.

sassymuffin · 16/03/2016 08:46

Writer Sally Wainwright on BBC Breakfast now

southeastdweller · 16/03/2016 08:56

Totally agree about the France's and Catherine scenes, much more effective than a violent showdown. Catherine was professional and compassionate yet you felt her simmering disgust and fury - Sarah Lancashire deserves every award going for her performance in this series.

ILikeToClean · 16/03/2016 09:16

Amazing finale. Loved the humour in between the grittiness, I was chuckling at Catherine asking John how to talk him down, then gasping in horror as he fell.

She's a great character - so hard on the surface but love her private moments where she allows herself to fall apart, you feel like Becky's suicide is just constantly there in the background, haunting her despite her getting on with a tough job and raising a child.

I think at the end she's realising that she needs to find the language to talk to Ryan about his mum and "dad". It's not going to go away.

Agree the scene between her and Frances was far more effective than a big showdown.

Sally Wainwright on breakfast said she hopes to write a third series but might be a while as she wants to make sure she can dedicate the time to make sure it's as good.

New series on next Tuesday night - the A Word - might be good?

I'd like to see an RL interview with S Lancashire because I'd love to know how much of SL is in her roles. She has the same kind of persona and voice in HV and Last Tango even though they are completely different; that kind of worldliness and the shoulder everyone cries on.

I thought the talking down scene with John verged on macabre as she was saying she'd not done the course and he then talked her through it - talk about dramatic irony. It was hard not to LOL and I think this verged on OTT.

I did think at the end we'd find out that Darryl had not really done it.
I don't know why Frances had to mumble and talk in a little girl's voice unless it was supposed to show how vulnerable and weak she was. I found her irritating.

G1raffe · 16/03/2016 10:00

Oh Id love it if we could have Sarah Lancashire in!

Yes to frances voice. I think it might be her voice...

squoosh · 16/03/2016 10:17

Fantastic finale. Agree that the quiet meetings between Catherine and France were far more effective than a guns blazing, knock 'em down, drag 'em out.

Loved the gallows humour where John was giving Catherine advice on how she should be talking him down 'you should be using my name a lot' juxtaposed with the horror of him then just tipping himself off the bridge. For a moment you feel sad for him and then you remember what he actually did to Vicky and that sympathy quickly evaporates!

Thought the ending was very sad. Ryan running around as happy as a lamb and Catherine looking at him knowing that as he grows up she's going to find it harder to love him.

TLR receiving Ryan's letter leaves the door open nicely for the next series.

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2016 10:19

And finally an acknowledgement that TLR is really, really ridiculously good looking.

ArmySal · 16/03/2016 10:24

TLR is lovely looking.

I'm absolutely astounded at SL's acting, superb. She played Catherine fantastically, who reminds me very much of my own mum.

Frances was too teeny to appear frightening, I'd bet my 11 year old DD could launch her across a room one-handed.

I felt sorry for John in a weird way Blush

Gruach · 16/03/2016 10:26

I wonder what TLR had his other fiancées doing for him ... A little army of infatuated slaves carrying his works into the world.

Perhaps we'll find out in the next couple of years.

squoosh · 16/03/2016 10:28

Every (deluded) long term soap star who leaves Corrie/Emmerdale/Eastenders to make it as a serious actor must look at Sarah Lancashire's career and pray to Thespio the acting God that their career will mirror her's.

Suranne Jones is the only one I can think of who might do as well.

ElementaryMyDear · 16/03/2016 10:31

SaliShoes, I think we were supposed to find Frances irritating!

Another boost for Sarah Lancashire's acting - when she was giving the caution to Alison but her voice had nothing but compassion in it. Just astonishing.

ElementaryMyDear · 16/03/2016 10:34

Not sure about that, Squoosh - after all, Katherine Kelly and Amelia Bullmore are also ex Corrie and have had some very meaty acting roles, and Amelia Bullmore has also got into writing and directing.
