Anyone watching?

OP posts:
BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 14:10

I meant AC may have been influenced by Burgh Islnd....

RustyBear · 27/12/2015 14:15

I would really love to be watching this not knowing the story. If they really do stick to the original ending, that is! Though I'd guess the last chapter would be presented in a different way...
I first read the book when I was 10 and missed a lot of the subtleties and references, so I think there's a lot to be said for not reading/watching something like this too young.

Siwi · 27/12/2015 14:37

The weather is very accommodating to the plot.

BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 15:43

I'm really excited about how they are going to do the ending!

TurduckenForDinner · 27/12/2015 15:52

I've just watched it on iPlayer. It took a long time to get started, and there are a few too many moody close-ups (although I don't mind moody close-ups of Aidan Turner), once it got going it was pretty good though.

I had thought that the doctor was Damien Lewis, I wondered why he sounded so different when his usual accent and tone would have worked just as well. Blush

I can't remember how everyone dies or in what order, I think I read the book as a teenager which is so long ago that the book wasn't even called 'And then there were None' it was called 'Ten Little Indians'. It's just as well as forgetting has added to the suspense for me. I hope Aidan is one of the last to die .

RustyBear · 27/12/2015 15:54

Turducken - I read it so long ago,it had its original title, which wasn't Ten Little Indians...

TurduckenForDinner · 27/12/2015 16:03

You must be really old Rusty. Wink I can't remember a time when that word was acceptable, it feels quite shocking now that it wasn't the slightest bit contentious at the time. I had a quick look on Wiki and it was never published under that name in the US, and even Ten Little Indians was used for very long.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 27/12/2015 16:04

Bareessentials the David Suchet version of Evil Under the Sun was filmed on Burgh Island. The Peter Ustinov version was set on a fictional island, but I believe it was filmed on Majorca.

I'd love to go to Burgh Island. Don't imagine I will ever be able to afford it!

BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 16:05

Yes, I found my copy earlier which had the original title. The island was also named after the original title.
I have an annoying habit of flicking through the last few pages of a murder mystery just to see who's still alive at the end and I remember seeing the last word in this novel which unfortunately gives it away!

TurduckenForDinner · 27/12/2015 16:06

Sorry, Ten Little Indians wasn't used for very long in the US.

BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 16:08

You can go to Burgh Island and walk around it. Iirc you can have snacks and meals in the hotel even if you aren't staying there. Disclaimer: This was over 30 years ago, things might have changed since then!

RustyBear · 27/12/2015 16:21

Just checked my copy - (originally my parents' copy) published 1968.

My sister and her DH stayed in the hotel for a night in the spring as part of her 60th birthday celebrations- it's very nice, apparently. We used to spend our holidays in Devon and Bigbury/Burgh Island was my favourite beach - we loved riding in the sea tractor that took you over at high tide. I think the house that's now the hotel was empty for a while before it was refurbished as a hotel, we used to walk round the island, but I don't remember being able to get near the house at all

absolutelynotfabulous · 27/12/2015 18:27

Quite enjoyed that. However, I had no clue as to what they were all doing there-anyone enlighten me?

Siwi · 27/12/2015 18:36

Erm, that's the idea.
:)

eddiemairswife · 27/12/2015 18:42

I too read it as a teenager with the original title. Can't remember when it became offensive, but I have a nursery rhyme book published in 1966 with the original rhyme. Really enjoying this adaption; I think Aidan and his towel appear tonight.

.

absolutelynotfabulous · 27/12/2015 18:52

Thanks siwi. I blame the cooking sherry for my intellectual weakness.Wine.

There's something much better on S4C at the same time anyway..i think I'll stick to that.Wink

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 18:54

Ah thanks youandme I got it the wrong way round!
Would love to visit that island.

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 19:05

absolutely It is kind of explained in the first episode. Wary of putting too much on here incase it spoils it for anyone. Definitely worth rewatching and seeing the next 2 episodes. It is a great story.

Siwi · 27/12/2015 19:49

I didn't mean to offend, absolutely.
It is a brilliant story and well worth watching.
:)

CremeEggThief · 27/12/2015 20:13

I have been on Burgh Island for a picnic and a walk, about 6 years ago now. Both the hotel and pub were open, but we didn't go in themXmas Sad. I also read the autobiography of the man who restored the Burgh Island hotel and who stayed on as manager until the late eighties, I think. I found it in a National Trust shop in Devon. It's a little gem of a book. It's called "The Great White Palace" by Tony Porter.

alltheworld · 27/12/2015 21:15

Anyone agree that the actress playing Vera looks like Emily blunt?

Muffintopmum · 27/12/2015 21:19

alltheworld Yes - thank you. I've been trying to think who she reminds me of.

RufusTheReindeer · 27/12/2015 22:01

I have just thrown away the original copy of my book as it had the original title and a picture on the front of a certain toy

I think i bought it 2nd hand

Keeping fairly well to the book...must buy myself a new one Hmm

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 22:05

I thoroughly enjoyed the second part. Can't wait for tomorrow. Wish more of the adaptations were like this.

TurduckenForDinner · 27/12/2015 22:12

Oh my, Aidan Turner spent quite a long time wandering around in just a towel, didn't he? I wonder if he knew when he went into acting that the biggest hazard would by hypothermia? Pretty much every role he does now requires him to bare his torso.
