Anyone watching?

OP posts:

I'm petty certain that island was just Lundy from afar with an Art Deco house photoshopped on.

I'm from Cornwall, enjoy a bit of location spotting Smile have never been to the spout hole though. I'd say that quay looked more like Mullion than Meva to me, but no actual idea.

I thought Aiden Turner looked very handsome, much better than as Ross Poldark! I did like the story too, have never read nor seen it before so it will be a surprise for me!

BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 09:16

I didn't realise this was on so missed the beginning but this was my favourite AC book and it's looking good so far. I was disappointed that Mr Rogers was portrayed as violent towards his wife. It's a shame that scriptwriters believe they need to add DV to keep viewers interested because the adaptation could be brilliant just by slavishly following the book. I've seen at least one other screen adaptation of this and it was bloody awful. I have hopes for this!

GeorginaWorsley · 27/12/2015 09:28

I repeat I am convinced harbour was Mullion

spanky2 · 27/12/2015 09:34

It is. I found out online.

Dowser · 27/12/2015 09:40

Oooh ! Spooky and creepy! Did they really do coke in 1939?

Someone got in before me!

AIDAN TURNER FOR NEXT BOND!!!!

Definitely!

All the time I was watching it I was waiting for him to break into James Bond mode....getting ahead of myself.

Read the book ages ago( as in 30-40, maybe 50 years ago!) so only vaguely remember the plot. I had to keep putting a blanket over my head!

Lightweight that I am.

That and goodbye mr chips have been the best things so far on tv for me this Christmas.

UnGoogleable · 27/12/2015 09:47

Ooh I enjoyed this last night. Haven't read the book, so it's all new to me.

I think the house is definitely photoshopped onto the island. It looks like a lighthouse keepers house from the outside, in which case it definitely wouldn't be as grand as that inside. It's gorgeous - I'm loving the interior, and the young lady secretary's outfits.

DP and I both gasped at that crater at the beginning! Want to go there - never been to Cornwall, but it's on the list for sure!

krazipan · 27/12/2015 09:52

I missed it last night and I can't see ep 1 on iplayer.

Clawdy · 27/12/2015 09:57

Cocaine definitely around then! Cole Porter wrote "I get a kick out of you " in 1934 with a line about sniffing cocaine. It was altered in later versions!

Dowser · 27/12/2015 10:04

Hmmm! I lived a sheltered life.

The closest I got to drugs in the 70s was when me and my friend were stuck at traffic lights , in Sheffield that big, bad den of iniquity and a guy stuck his head through the open open window of my friends mini and said ' hey, do you want some acid?'

Erm, no thanks!

Marmitelover55 · 27/12/2015 10:30

Fingers crossed for some scything action from Aidan Turner Grin

Siwi · 27/12/2015 10:35

Dowser, loads of drugs in AC. But it is referred to as dope and can be missed.

spababe · 27/12/2015 10:41

Loving it so far esp Aiden. Very dark and brooding. The play was written by Christie when she was at Burgh Island which is off the coast of Devon. It has an art deco hotel and a small pub but nothing else and is cut off from the mainland at high tide. So the island and the house DO exist but are not the ones used by the BBC in this production.

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 10:49

spababe that sounds like the setting for another of her books too or am I getting confused?
Envy Envy of those who don't know the story. Wish I was reading or watching it again for the first time.

pizzaeatingmonkey · 27/12/2015 11:00

I remember reading a 1960s vintage Christie book as a teenager and it was all about LSD. Xmas Shock

Marmitelover55 · 27/12/2015 11:11

The other AC book set on Burgh Island I think is Evil under the sun - also very good. I have been to the pub on Burgh Island - The Pilchard Inn - but sadly never stayed in the hotel!

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 11:13

Ah yes that was the Peter Ustinov one wasn't it? Think the David Suchet version was set elsewhere.

Siwi · 27/12/2015 11:18

They had very small suitcases.
Bit of Mary Popins going on there.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/12/2015 11:27

DH & I were laughing at how they were obviously empty as well siwi Grin

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2015 11:44

I liked it too. But what does everyone mean about it being "graphic?" Which bits? Confused

I had had a drink while watching. Grin

And did I also miss Aiden in only a towel? Sad

Baressentials · 27/12/2015 12:04

I think it is because it is so different to the normal Agatha Christie adaptations.

Elendon · 27/12/2015 12:14

Graphic: The domestic violence regarding the Butler and his wife. The Butler killing the older woman in her bed - I found those graphic and shocking.

Agatha Christie always exposed the dark side of human nature in every one of her books.

Whilst I enjoyed the ITV adaptations of Miss Marple, they did have a saccharine sugar coating that really wasn't in the books.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 27/12/2015 12:15

The smothering, chocking, butlers violence towards his wife, doctors dream was all quite graphic along with the story for a 10/11 year old to watch. Someone had asked if it was suitable for that age so responses were to that and most AC adaptations are often tongue in cheek or camp (why not sure) this wasn't

Coke was a popular drug to use in the 20's and 30's as mentioned above in cole porters song. Opium was also used my granddad remembered seeing as a child (I guess 1910's) men and women staggering out of opium dens it was a poorer peoples drug

Elendon · 27/12/2015 12:22

Re Trevose Head: The hole is a collapsed cave. There is a lighthouse nearby.

CorBlimeyTrousers · 27/12/2015 13:39

I enjoyed this. Am looking forward to the next parts. I know I've read the book as I went through a big Agatha Christie phase as a teenager but luckily for me I can't remember.

BoGrainger · 27/12/2015 14:08

The book may have been influenced by Burgh Island but the book isn't set there as you could walk to the mainland at low tide. The whole point of the book is that they are cut off from the mainland so the murderer has to be one of those stranded on the island
