maddie I've read Girl on the Train I'm afraid. I'd love to find something like I Am Pilgrim - a big page turner that doesn't require too much thought. Of course I leave reading Proust and Tolstoy (in the original of course) for the summer hols. Smile

cjwoofwoof · 16/12/2015 18:19

Ooh nick that's good Christmas viewing indeed but I feel the bells may have rung more musically if they'd been hanging from alternative appendages than the sporran Grin

orph as I recall the finale of our stage show required extra large cow bells with very long internal pull cords mainly hanging out Ah yes, it gave a whole new meaning to "Please Ring for Service"

Nickel45 · 16/12/2015 18:20

Have to admit orph it did make me think of you and woof!!

I'm afraid my reading of choice is chic lit (liking Jenny Colgan cupcake cafe ones).... about the limit of my concentration at the moment, but if you've not read The Island, by Victoria Hislop, I'd recommend it :)

pixieg1rl · 16/12/2015 18:42

Orphan have you read any Jo Baker? And was it you that liked Matt Haig?

BK28 · 16/12/2015 18:50

nickel have to agree re The Island ...good read, but not too challenging!

MaddieMoo82 · 16/12/2015 19:06

nickel Xmas Grin that cheered me right up!!

I have I am pilgrim to read at some point orph, have heard good things. Also recommend the last days of rabbit Hayes. One on the only books that has made me howl with laugher and cry all in one Smile

Amazing chapter from whajeb - the power of combats BlushGrin

orphan · 16/12/2015 20:37

pixie yes I love Matt Haig. I've read Longbourn - I think that's Jo Baker?

I'm hiding in the dining room cos dp is currently wrestling with the tree which is doing its best to resist all attempts to be fitted into the tree holder. The saw has come out and a drill and now there's talk of making 'wedges'. Maybe trees at a jaunty 45 degree angle could become all the rage?

pixieg1rl · 16/12/2015 20:53

Yes, Jo Baker was Longbourn, the one she wrote before that is good as well, The Picture Book.

The Humans by Matt Haig is great, nothing too strenuous and very funny.

I started reading the Last Days of Anna Madrigal on my spa break and haven't touched it since. I love Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City so much that I don't think I can bear to read the last book in the series. I had thought of reading Margaret Atwood's latest, but I don't know if I have the mental capacity for it at the moment.

moojangles · 16/12/2015 21:13

SPO strikes again!

kuiakaituhi · 17/12/2015 05:26

Have just finished "The Secret Chord" by Geraldine Brooks, She's an excellent writer. This one is about King David from the Bible. Might have written the Psalms but was a randy old goat!!! Stole one of his officer's wives, put him into the thick of battle to be killed. Leonard Cohen wrote "Hallelujah" about this incident...."I heard there was a secret chord..."

She also wrote "March".

Now right into "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children". Can't put it down, in the way of my next ff chapter and my last bit of Christmas shopping. Won all kinds of awards. Love the writer's name- Ransom Riggs. I gather it's book one of a three part series'.

A must read is "Room". Hard story, wonderful characters and writing. Film due for release very soon. Have a look at the trailers on You Tube.

I"ve got six weeks holiday now, have just had my ??th birthday, have just done my usual present to me,six brand new books on my bedside table. My idea of heaven. The love of books came from when I was a small girl a long, long time ago and was in isolation from other kids with a really infectious strain of TB. Unheard of these days, thank God.

So there are a few ideas, for what they're worth. And buy yourselves Outlander about a seriously sexy Scot. Who knows, Mr Aldridge might get a bit of a holiday breather from his almost stalkers!!!

kuiakaituhi · 17/12/2015 05:27

Bad writing, I had the TB, not the other kids.

apsara03 · 17/12/2015 06:54

Re books - I agree Room is amazing. On the lighter front really enjoyed you had me at hello, which was a recommendation on here a while back. Gone girl if you haven't read/seen the film, just finished The Letter, which I liked and quite an easy read . Also enjoyed the other hand and Elizabeth is Missing this year. I'm amazed I've manage to read so many books given all the fan fic, especially as I got consumed with Dance the Tides

Ilovelblue · 17/12/2015 07:11

Morning all. Was at our local Christmas market last night. Mainly tat but a very festive atmosphere. We topped it off with a late tea at the local Italian. Had to come home and make a cake to take to my elderly friend with the very ill husband tonight. It's her birthday tomorrow and these days it's hard to know what to buy her as she has no time for hobbies etc these days. I'll take her Christmas present too.

pixieg1rl · 17/12/2015 07:25

I had a massive stress out at MrP last night over how much there's still to do for Xmas. He's merrily buying presents for DS who is got plenty already and nothing for anyone else.

DS has a bit of a temperature this morning, it's a case of calpol and crossed fingers. Hopefully it's just end of term knackeredness

Onlygirljen · 17/12/2015 07:47

Morning all - I'm full of festive cheer not this morning, especially since I get to miss this afternoons boozy afternoon team Christmas lunch to stay behind and work on something that can't wait till tomorrow AngryHmm grrrrrrr am feeling very grinch like.

Just realised this morning that it's exactly a year today since I posted my first ever ff chapter and so almost a year since delurking on this thread!! Doesn't feel that long at all!

Richtea19 · 17/12/2015 09:37

Happy Anniversary Jen, maybe another chapter to celebrate!!! Sounds very mean spirited of work to make you miss boozy drinks Envy

The last time I read books was on my summer hols and the of time waiting to have a blood test or at the dentist! But then I have to read back a few chapters to remind myself what it's all about. I really must out some bloody effort in and try to pick up my kindle, maybe a Laurie Love!!!!

I iced a couple of Christmas cakes yesterday and will do the rest today, I got myself in a right pickle with the red food colouring. It looked like I had cut my wrists.. Now I look like I have a red rash all over my hand and arm!

Waiting for hairdresser to arrive (help the grey!) perhaps now is the time to read a book Grin

KellyHb · 17/12/2015 09:41

Morning all

Jen I'm not full of any festive cheer today either. DD's got a bad cough and she's coughing so much, she was sick this morning in our bed(!) and at the breakfast table when the boys were eating which they continued to do after the event!

I had call DH back from work to help get the boys ready for school while I've tried to clear up! Hence about 6 loads of washing to do now. Gah! At least it didn't happen yesterday when she had her Xmas party.

Hope your day improves pix. Xmas is such a carry on, isn't it?

That's gutting Jen about you working this afternoon. Could you have a sneaky finish?

I was quite happy last night as TG favourited a tweet I sent about Xmas festiveness and thinking of CJ and Molly cosy in Bath. Smile

pixieg1rl · 17/12/2015 10:05

Ugh, poor vomity DD Kelly. Hope she feels better soon. Too many puking kids around at the moment.

DS has wet the bed 2 nights in a row. He's shattered and by 6pm he's just horrible. He's one of these kids that sleeps less the more tired he becomes. I'm trying to engineer some early nights because I can't do anything about the wake ups.

Maybe if you get your work out of the way you can bunk off early Jen? I had to do interviews instead of going to my Xmas lunch, but mine isn't exciting or boozy, so I didn't miss anything.

icemistOBE · 17/12/2015 13:02

Hope this cheers you up Kelly

Yey!! You beauty ice.

Thanks so much. StarStar I'll try not to watch it continuously Grin

cjwoofwoof · 17/12/2015 14:14

No good asking me about books - I only read the ff if I get a sit down these days and if I'm lucky a newspaper.

Commiserations to all the mothers of poorly kids - it does get better as they get older and the ailments become more self-inflicted honest. And bad luck jen on missing the party - should give you ample time for another chapter, however...just saying... Oops, my autocorrect wanted to put fwank there then - what on earth is going on?

Getting to grips with Christmas slowly but surely here at Woof Towers - another joy of older kids is they are more capable of helping out/getting on with stuff whilst you deal with something else unlike their Dad who can't drag himself away from the footy on TV

cjwoofwoof · 17/12/2015 14:15

Why isn't my Xmas Wink working???

cjwoofwoof · 17/12/2015 14:16

Ahaa I see it is after all - I suppose a fwank emoticon is out of the question really...

KellyHb · 17/12/2015 14:29

I like that word 'fwank' woof. I might drop it into conversation with DH later as I'm zany like that and the kids have driven me to distraction today

I'm so behind on reading FF. I can't believe I had time to write FF this year, never mind ready any Shock

KellyHb · 17/12/2015 14:33

Yes woof another reason why I can't wait for the kids to get older.

DD lying watching TV surrounded by anything she might need -and managed to get the boys to sit down for 2 mins-- and I'm thinking, I would love time to just lie there too.
