Anyone watching this? Always wish they would do these things in Old English & Old Norse with subtitles. Matthew Mcfadyen's a bit posh for it. And what was the boy in?

No idea what to expect so hopefully it'll be good!

Thanks JR! Is the book that is in asda at the minute the one you are talking about?

JRsandCoffee · 20/11/2015 06:57

It's by Bernard Cornwell! Suspect it is the one in Asda though not sure. It's the first f a long and entertaining series!

SurlyCue · 20/11/2015 09:30

Thanks JR.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 20/11/2015 09:44

Another one here who's going to have to get the books!

Am I the only one who hopes that Uhtred will kill all of those Christian arseholes for being fucking assholes? Especially that weasel Odda the youngest, followed by Alfred and Beocca.

quirkychick · 22/11/2015 08:12

I am definitely enjoying the first book, you can see how Alfred binds Uhtred to him much more. He doesn't jump from child to adult and suddenly go to Alfred, it makes a bit more sense. Have just met Leofric... very funny.

AnneEtAramis · 23/11/2015 12:59

Really enjoying this I really fancy pulling some of that hair DH likes it too so at least I don't have to convince him.

Really tempted by the books. Might see what the kindle says about it.

Trills · 24/11/2015 15:48

The two who were shagging on Uhtred's bed - was the girl in Raised By Wolves?

MirandaGoshawk · 26/11/2015 11:32

I am really enjoying this, as much as I did the Three Musketeers and Poldark. But I want the vikings to take over - they are so much more fun!

SurlyCue · 26/11/2015 12:25

Yes trills she was. Cant remember her name in it. Was it germaine? Or aretha?

quirkychick · 26/11/2015 22:02

Ooh, that was exciting! Uhtred is just a big teenager isn't he? I feel sorry for Mildrith, though.

SurlyCue · 26/11/2015 22:32

He really is! The whole way through all i could think was "oh youre such a dick uhtred!" Grin and yes poor mildreth. He is cruel to her.

dillite · 27/11/2015 01:17

Fuck Mildrith. She had her chance and she blew it.

You have no idea just how much I am enjoying Uhtred and his long locks. He really does make me weak at the knees. I could spend hours braiding it.

It's great having a TV series set in something that isn't in Victorian England or blooming WW2. Especially something that's this well written.

quirkychick · 27/11/2015 07:17

I did miss the first 15 mins, so will rewatch (which will be a hardship!). I am enjoying both the TV series and the first book. Double Uhtred Grin.

MirandaGoshawk · 27/11/2015 12:35

dillite you'd have to fight me for him Grin He is gorgeous and far too pretty to be a warrior, but who cares? If I was pg now I'd be in Baby Names asking WIBU to call my DS Uthred, or will people including me not know how to spell it?

MirandaGoshawk · 27/11/2015 12:36

Yes, and Midriff is such a whiny mare I'd want to sleep in the goat pen with someone a bit more exciting.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/11/2015 13:12

Am sooo enjoying this series and, off the back of this thread, have just ordered the first three books.

Is it very wrong that I found last night's new viking - the throat-biting one with the bloodstained mouth and black eyeshadow - rather alarmingly attractive? Blush

dillite · 27/11/2015 13:42

Miranda I've beheaded a chicken, I'm sure I can take on a human if I must. Go full viking for those luscious locks of his.

And yes Bore you should be ashamed.

expatinscotland · 27/11/2015 13:51

'Uhtred is just a big teenager isn't he? I feel sorry for Mildrith, though.'

He can be very unpleasant in the first few books and admits he was stupid, too. Alfred was very patient with him then and downright merciful, but he does manipulate Uhtred quite a bit, too, and gets a fair amount of use out of him and most of all, keeps him out of Danish clutches.

expatinscotland · 27/11/2015 13:57

In the books it's hinted at that he is good-looking. He certainly has a lot of women.

gingercat12 · 27/11/2015 19:05

Ok, so I downloaded the 1st book on my kindle, too. Grin

quirkychick · 27/11/2015 21:28

I've almost finished the first book, it is a good read. Yy, expat he can be a bit unpleasant. Very interesting portrayal of Alfred, I was always taught Alfred the Great beat the wicked Vikings/Danes and established the Danelaw, keeping the Anglo-Saxons safe in Wessex. I was brought up near Winchester, where there is an enormous statue of Alfred the Great and he is definitely seen as a bit of a hero.

expatinscotland · 27/11/2015 21:31

'he is definitely seen as a bit of a hero.'

And he was. His will is in the British Library.
