Anyone watching this? Always wish they would do these things in Old English & Old Norse with subtitles. Matthew Mcfadyen's a bit posh for it. And what was the boy in?

No idea what to expect so hopefully it'll be good!

ha ha - Sometimes it makes no sense. If there is one thing we have an abundance of in Scotland it's desolate bleak scenery, hill/mountains, beaches and old castles so why they need to trot of to Ireland to shoot some people walking up a fucking hill I have no idea - the shooting at Bamburgh is fair enough as it is very dramatic with the Castle perched above the sea like that and we may not have anything that quite shows that - but then they still could have what we do have - it's bizarre.

gingercat12 · 05/11/2015 09:36

It is all to do with taxation and costs. They get a huge tax rebate after each production and fantastic facilities since Andy Vajna took over the management of filming in Hungary. Lots of the big Hollywood productions like the Martian was also shot there.

I love Geordie trees redannie Grin

What did everyone think of tonight's? Defiantly one you have to concentrate on but overall good...just one question with who's who..the ginger Dane with the face tattoo? Who is he? X

myotherusernameisbetter · 05/11/2015 23:00

myotherusernameisbetter · 05/11/2015 23:02

He's the guy that the old bling guy (Ragna's dad?) told Uhtred never to fight.

expatinscotland · 05/11/2015 23:04

The guy who plays Uhtred is drop dead gorgeous.

expatinscotland · 05/11/2015 23:06

Ravn warned Uhtred about Ubba.

myotherusernameisbetter · 05/11/2015 23:20

for you expat

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 09:34

I was a little put off at first, because Uhtred in the books is distinctly blond. I'm a huge fan of the books.

I think Alfred is perfectly cast, too.

His and Uhtred's love-hate relationship is one of the best in modern fiction. Uhtred is quite funny in the books and of course, grows in the series, which start when he's 9.

myotherusernameisbetter · 06/11/2015 10:28

I think I might look at getting the books. DS2 age 14 is very into history and is currently reading (by choice) a couple of different biographies of Alexander the Great, I think he'd enjoyed them. There is a bit too much bonking in the tv programme which always makes family viewing a bit uncomfortable :o

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 12:18

There is a lot of bonking in the books Grin. Uhtred is a total slag. He shags everyone, even a nun, and openly visits prostitutes, as do quite a few of his friends and liegemen. In the books he and Brida are much younger when they start shagging, only young teens.

He is very young in this book, the first of 9, and is true to form as a young warrior, but he tells it looking backwards and is true to himself.

Alfred has a bastard child (which was probably true historically, as in his will he left a sizeable piece of land and money to a man called Osferth he identified only as 'kinsman' whereas everyone else in the will is named as 'wife', 'son', etc. And even his biographer mentions that he struggled with sins of carnal nature. Basically, he liked fucking). There's a lot of rape and violence, too.

It was a pretty scary time to be alive.

myotherusernameisbetter · 06/11/2015 12:36

Yes, it was a brutal time! I'm not so fussed about him reading about it so much as it being awkward sat together watching it :)

Neither of my two boys showing much interest in girls (or boys) at the moment.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 13:04

The books are not nearly as graphic as Game of Thrones but they are definitely not for those looking for sanitised, romantic versions of the time period. Uhtred's job is to kill people, a job he does well, and more and more on a mass scale as he proves himself a useful military leader. He doesn't want to be anywhere but Bebbanburg, and certainly doesn't want to live in Wessex, but realises that destiny is everything and, though he loves the Danes and their way of life, he is Saxon and his fate is to fight for them. He develops grudging respect and admiration for Alfred, and vice versa, which proves a good thing in the end.

myotherusernameisbetter · 06/11/2015 13:24

he's been reading Game of Thrones :) but we haven't let him watch it as the IMdB warnings were pretty extreme, I don't really know if he is quite ready to watch fornicating dwarves - I'm certainly not ready to be sitting next to him on the sofa while he does....

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 13:46

Oh, GoT telly series DEFINITELY not for that age, IMO. This one is pretty tame by comparison, a little nipple sucking and dry humping is no biggie. GoT is very graphic.

The books are not as graphic as GoT, but there aren't a lot of virgins about, let's just say. Grin

I mean, we haven't seen much of that hunky Uhtred naked, and he's naked a lot in the books.

myotherusernameisbetter · 06/11/2015 14:00

I was a bit impressed at the girl washing her fanny nether regions in the water trough in the middle of the thoroughfare :) - was that drinking water??

It's probably too cold to be getting all stripped off in the woods, but we have seen quite a lot of Alfred's skinny frame.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 14:05

Yeah, enough of his frame, let's see some of Uhtred's and the guy who plays Ragnar the Younger. Mmm. Those two are gorgeous. Leofric in the books is hilarious.

In fact, there is a lot that is funny in the books. One time, Alfred laughs at Uhtred and tells him he has missed Uhtred as 'You are the only man who is impertinent with me.'

There isn't a lot of washing going on in the books, though. It's all very grotty with people wearing the same clothes till they fall apart. Yuk.

gingercat12 · 06/11/2015 19:45

expat I am going to get the books, you convinced me Grin

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 20:30

You won't be sorry, ginger. It's hard not to like him, or Alfred, due to the skill of the author. Ragnar the Elder is especially likable and funny.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 20:37

Uhtred as a youth is often quite unpleasant to Alfred, who is able to see past that when he could easily have had him executed. Alfred never loses hope or gives up on the idea he can reform Uhtred. As the older Uhtred narrates, he leaves his younger self with warts and all, which makes it far more believable. He was a cocky, young, strong arrogant warrior, although even his younger self admits luck is on his side. He grows out of it all, sort of Wink.

cadnowyllt · 07/11/2015 11:54

Amourfou

Not really - there were large parts of Britain not under the - see wiki page for the Danelaw for starters.

Trills · 07/11/2015 21:34

Hello - just found this thread.

I am enjoying this.

Finding Arthur very interesting - calm and collected and thinking about history. An interesting character.

I felt that adult Uhtred was a bit Legolas-like so I'm glad he's not blonde!

Trills · 07/11/2015 21:49

I liked Brida in ep2 and found her quite irritating in most of ep3, but if she was pregnant without knowing it (and possibly induced a miscarriage with her mushroom ale) then maybe she was behaving more irrationally and finding herself ANGRY ALL THE TIME because of that.
