Youtube Documentaries...Which Have You Enjoyed?

DoveOfPeace · 25/05/2015 23:52

There is so much stuff on Youtube, and probably loads I'd like to watch but I am having trouble finding it.

What would you recommend?

I have been watching loads of World's Strictest Parents, and I am getting bored! Smile

WARNING POSSIBLE TRIGGER

I avoid things that reference suicide. I am only saying this because it is surprisingly common for this topic to crop up everywhere.

Any 30 from 30 docs are brilliant even if you're not into sports. There's one about Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan (the ice skaters) which is brilliant and totally changed my perception on what happened.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/05/2015 19:13

Blackfish is pretty well known but well worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's about whales kept in captivity and features the keeper at Sea world killed a few years back.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/05/2015 19:15

Also, Lake of fire is a good abortion one I saw a few years back.

Mamiof3 · 28/05/2015 19:24

The Centralia one is fab. There is a few by Vice which are brilliant but don't watch the one about the forest in Japan it will trigger you. There's one on their channel called Inside North Korea which is great. Aside from Vice (just search Vice documentaries) look for Brave Miss World, very inspiring (deals with rape/abuse yet uplifting, I found it difficult but glad I watched), and The Dark Matter of Love which is about Russian orphans being adopted into the Usa

onemississippi · 28/05/2015 19:32

The Going Clear Scientology one - mindblowing!!! Shock I watched it a few weeks ago but think it's been removed from Youtube now.

I started watching the Real Crime series as I was reminded of the Mitchell/Lynsey Quy case not long ago Sad

blueemerald · 28/05/2015 19:33

Oh yes. Dark matter of love is great too (I'm a bit of a docu nut....) and Blackfish is interesting.

I'm watching the lost boys of polygamy and and totally wrapped up in Hillary's storyline!

DoveOfPeace · 29/05/2015 14:09

Hope you liked The Lost Boys of Polygamy, blueemarald. I found it fascinating to watch - Felt so sorry for everyone concerned though.

Thanks everyone for all these suggestions. Flowers Smile

Great threadSmile
Bill Bryson talks about Centralia in his book The Lost Continent and it always sounded so interesting.
Will certainly watch that one.

DoveofPeace I really did. I teach in a school for boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties so there were a lot of parallels with those boys and my students.

DoveOfPeace · 29/05/2015 18:51

Glad you liked it, blueemarald. Smile

Watched the Vice one about North Korea today, obviously it's a horrifying regime, but the documentary was fascinating and funny, four courses of batter.
would it be okay to keep posting/bumping with what we have watched?

Mamiof3 · 29/05/2015 21:55

I'm glad you enjoyed the North Korea one

Another one which I've enjoyed is Painted Babies about child beauty pageants in the us in the 90s. The little girl featured has actually had a very sad life since the docu was filmed.

Has ANYONE watched Brave Miss World?! Dying to discuss it!!

couldntbebothered · 29/05/2015 22:13

Watched blackfish based on the recommendations from here, amazing documentary, and very sad

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 29/05/2015 22:27

Shy Bairns Get Nowt by Vice is an amazing documentary about the people who run and use the busiest food bank in the UK.

hiddenhome · 29/05/2015 23:31

I'm currently watching it and it's fascinating.

CakeNinja · 29/05/2015 23:37

Yy to blackfish. Watched it about a year or so ago and was disturbed by some of the footage, then re watched it (on Netflix but believe it's availabe on YouTube aswell) a few weeks ago and was equally gobsmacked.
I'm going to check out a few mentioned above.

CakeNinja · 30/05/2015 02:48

Good grief, a letter to Zachary - heartbreaking Sad

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/05/2015 13:54

Watched both of painted babies today, the one about the Japanese suicide forest, one about kidnapping brides in Kyrgyzstan and letters to Zachary, which made me sob.
I'm currently watching an old firm one which is interesting as Glasgow is my nearest city.

MrsTedCrilly · 30/05/2015 17:34

Thanks so much Buxton I've been meaning to watch the Centralia one for a while after reading about it in a Bill Bryson book. Really enjoyed it last night Smile

woowoo22 · 30/05/2015 17:46

Does anyone have any recommendations for documentaries about unusual Christian sects/cults?

I have watched quite a few documentaries on the Amish and a couple on the Hutterites. The Amish one where the couple are in the process of leaving is very good (a BBC one).

hiddenhome · 30/05/2015 19:29

There's one about the Plymouth Brethren that I watched. One is a UK documentary, and the other, Australian.

hiddenhome · 30/05/2015 19:29

Exclusive Brethren rather.

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 30/05/2015 19:37

I see someone has already recommended The Staircase. It's in six parts and took over a week of my life! There is a follow up too. Apparently it was an inspiration to the people who made Serial. Highly recommend if you like a real life whodunit

DoveOfPeace · 30/05/2015 20:32

woowoo22 - If you haven't already watched it, you'll probably like The Lost Boys of Polygamy. It is about the Fundamental Latter Day Saints. I would hghly recommend it.
