Grin Anyone else counting down the days! I actually get nervous thinking about it. I have re watched all series and reading the books to pass the time.

Can't wait to see what they do with Sansa and Tyrion this series. And will we see the hound again and lady stone heart?

"I reiterate the idea that rape is not a fate worse than death"

I totally agree, and I also consider that some kinds of rape are far, far worse than others, although the thought police won't allow this.

Vivacia · 22/05/2015 17:47

I know that this is not an appropriate time, but if I don't share it now I'll forget,

Try again GoTMusical

Vivacia · 22/05/2015 17:49

Catches up with the thread. Sighs

I also consider that some kinds of rape are far, far worse than others

How do you measure worseness of rape?

LeBearPolar · 22/05/2015 18:10

Came on to check the GoT musical had been linked to - almost cried laughing. Highlights are Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage, of course.

limitedperiodonly · 22/05/2015 18:20

I suspect I wouldn't agree with FatWalda, however I do accept that there have to be sliding scales.

Sentencing guidelines in English law on violent crime depend on the degree of violence perpetrated in various assaults; rape being one of them.

It's easy to accept the concept of a masked man with a knife who drags a teenage virgin into an alley.

That rarely happens.

I would strongly argue that a rape perpetrated by someone in a position of trust, such as a long-standing husband or other long term partner is deeply damaging because it goes to the core of the victim's ability to trust one of the people that they should most be able to rely on.

Particularly if it happens repeatedly.

The maximum penalty for rape is life imprisonment and that's what I'd consider fitting for that kind of offender.

I can dream.

I'd say that a stranger rape that has little or no personal or violent impact and trust issues is easier to get over.

It hurts psychologically and sometimes physically, but ultimately they don't matter.

But that's just me.

I am not saying that all rapes should not be taken more seriously

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2015 18:28

That GoT musical link was fab! Thanks so much.

LeBearPolar · 22/05/2015 18:37

That blog was spot on.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 22/05/2015 18:49

The GoT musical is awesome Grin I particularly enjoyed the line, 'I was his uncle, but also his dad'.

AmberFool · 22/05/2015 19:44

GoT musical. Brilliant. Grin

FatWalda · 22/05/2015 19:56

"I'd say that a stranger rape that has little or no personal or violent impact and trust issues is easier to get over"

Not sure what you mean by "little or no personal or violent impact".

"It's easy to accept the concept of a masked man with a knife who drags a teenage virgin into an alley.

That rarely happens."

Oh so that's all right then. I'm appalled that you can write that off so breezily. Such an attack by a stranger can be deeply damaging, to the point where a girl may be scared of going anywhere. Believe me I know what I'm talking about.

Compared with a date situation where both parties have had too much to drink and things go too far. Not even close. That's also happened to me and I put it in the "shit happens" box and moved on.

Not going to discuss this any further.

Lweji · 22/05/2015 20:30

GoT musical.

I'd go. Grin

limitedperiodonly · 22/05/2015 20:45

FatWalda

In a reply to a post of mine you said this:

I totally agree, and I also consider that some kinds of rape are far, far worse than others, although the thought police won't allow this.

You were wrong to presume that I would agree with you about the 'thought police' and had no right to get on your high horse about anything I'd about different degrees of assault which include a sexual element.

I've found it easier to overcome abuse, including what some might term rape, by someone I had little trust in.

Ive found it a lot harder to overcome abuse at the hands of someone I trusted.

But as I said, that's just me.

In any case, this is just Telly Addicts, so let's just calm down and let it go, eh?

LeBearPolar · 22/05/2015 21:26

I would totally go to the GoT musical.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 23/05/2015 00:24

Can we please not rank rape (especially in terms of RL rape) in terms of 'worseness'. Rape is rape is rape.

BooChunky · 23/05/2015 08:01

That musical link is amazing Grin

(And why has a fun thread descended into rape madness?? Can we stop?)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/05/2015 08:07

Much as I love GoT, it isn't frothy fun, is it? So not surprising it leads to discussions like this.

PonyoLovesHam · 23/05/2015 09:45

GoT musical is great, and the little wink Jon Snow gave Ygritte made me feel a bit funny ShockWink

Vivacia thanks for your explanation of Sansa in the bath, very good! I was commenting to dp how much Sansa is looking like her mother, that must have been intentional surely but I don't know how they did it. Clever make up maybe.

I hope I can say this without getting told off but do we know if Cat will be reappearing in the show?

Lweji · 23/05/2015 10:04

You mean Kit Snow? Grin

The rape scene is perfectly expected in the context of the fictional time period, him being a nasty piece of work and the arranged marriage.
Sansa was expecting him to have sex with her.

For me the unexpected and nastiest bit was that Theon/Reek was watching, and that was the most degrading aspect to both of them, IMO. Which is why it also focused on his face at the end. Whether it will mean something woke up in him or not...

LeBearPolar · 23/05/2015 10:09

You're not alone there...

I agree with Lweji and the blog linked to earlier: there is no way that a marriage to Ramsay would have ended in any other plausible outcome than a wedding night rape. It is entirely coherent with his characterisation and the narrative constructed around him. Therefore, I am not sure why this moment more than any other is causing such outrage. It more than any other act of sexual violence on the show is the one which I would say is absolutely not gratuitous but the only possible outcome of the chosen storyline.

Trills · 23/05/2015 10:25

And having your penis chopped off is having your penis chopped off is having your penis chopped off.

But the psychological implications for Theon would be very different if it had happened in battle (via a very precisely-thrown knife?), or been done by a woman he was sleeping with, or done by Ramsay as part of a calculated campaign of torture.

Anyway, I am not going to join in any generalised or real-world rape discussions on this thread.

Trills · 23/05/2015 10:29

I watched The White Queen a while ago.

Anne Neville (daughter of "the Kingmaker", later marries Richard III), marries Edward son of Henry VI (old mad Henry). He's a nasty piece of work. On their wedding night she says "I don't know what to do, nobody told me", and he says "you don't DO anything, you just lie there".

That's a bit what this reminded me of.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 23/05/2015 10:54

And having your penis chopped off is having your penis chopped off is having your penis chopped off

Disussing the fate of a fictional character is not the same as a general discussion of levels if rape IRL

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 23/05/2015 11:01

Anyway...

A friend of mine started watching GOT two weeks ago and is as Jon Snow, she knows nothing about the series. It's been great fun waiting for her to catch up with the big moments to see her reaction. In the first series she decided Ned was her favourite character Wink Then after that she moved on to Rob Stark Grin Current favourite is the Hound lol I really liked him too and am hoping he will somehow return I would suggest she stops picking favourites but it's more fun this way
She's already caught up with Joffrey'a death. Soon she'll be in the same boat as the rest of us and the agony of waiting will start
