If it had been CJ in Poldark returning to find his girl engaged to another, I can't see her going through with the wedding. More likely throw the fiancé off the cliff and disappear with CJ for some long overdue QS.

Hope you have a quiet today jen and a better night's sleep tonight. Good luck with work ilove

LolaKent14 · 09/03/2015 09:07

G'Morning Not sure I have recovered from Poldark as yet. It was quite lush.

Thought this might be of interest to the writers on here:

jenowenby.wordpress.com/2015/02/25/stephen-kings-top-20-rules-for-writers

I knew there was a reason I needed to clean out my spare room!

threadNneedle · 09/03/2015 09:24

I didn't watch Poldark (may check it out on iplayer) but the Guardian review made me giggle
Could they have done a more interesting reinvention – brought it to the present day, with Ross returning home from a tour of Afghanistan, to find the family caravan park or number 20 the Royal Crescent run down?

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 09:55

Lola those rules inspire and terrify me in equal measure! I have to say, though, they've answered a problem that I've been struggling with. I'm not entirely sure about the adverbs comment although I suppose he's saying find a better way of expressing yourself, which is always a good idea. I do like the idea about not obsessing over perfect grammar because I have to admit I have been driven to distraction over colons and semi colons and the correct use of them having read all the rules. I don't remember anyone ever talking about this at school - it was a long time ago.

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 10:05

Also would love to have a spare room but in my house it looks like it might have to be the cupboard under the stairs which I can't look at now without thinking of cjwoof.

cjwoofwoof · 09/03/2015 10:40

Good morning lovely ladies, I'm back in the room! Such a lot of action you've all missed from Woof Manor. Firstly Rupert returned to thank me several times once again for getting him back on the straight and not so narrow after orphan almost castrated him with her double action kangaroo swivel last week. Yes indeed he was very grateful.

Then yesterday I had to fly out to Kenya on a rescue mission after a distress call from Mr pixie saying he was stuck in the suitcase on the carousel at Nairobi airport. He'd overheard pixie saying "no Boss, we can't go into the bush and just leave him here going round and round" to which some posh Rupert voice replied "Let's go! I need that bloody bush!" Poor man, he'd been revolving since Friday...

And let's not even go there with ATs first night Poldark nerves; the carpet burns are red raw today.

Honestly, I'm glad to get back to RL on here Grin

icemistOBE · 09/03/2015 11:07

Wow cjwoof that was some mission!

Rhubarb on the writing course I just went on the editors running the course said. Never worry about the grammar get the story down on paper thats what a reader wants more than anything.

LolaKent14 · 09/03/2015 12:16

and just noticed my grammar really bad there! lol

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 12:44

Well, thank god for that. I have to admit that I looked up 'the passive voice' as well. I was aware of passive tense because I studied languages many moons ago but that was another minefield of different uses in different circumstances. I think he was saying, just be definite about who's saying and doing everything and don't vaguely shilly-shally about (whoops was that an adverb!). There are some contradictions though - reading lots and lots of other stuff is good but then you have to make sure you don't imitate anyone else. They were great points but perhaps point 21 should be don't get too obsessed by following lots of rules. (I'm joking of course, he knows what he's talking about far, far more than I do or ever will!)

orphan · 09/03/2015 13:01

Oh glad and bloody jealous to hear about all your goings on cjwoof. Could you just remind Rupert that he signed the damage waiver quite willingly? To be honest, on reflection I feel it was his lack of sufficient up thrust that caused the 'incident' rather than any miscalculation on my part. I'm happy to give him another go chance though...

orphan · 09/03/2015 13:14

Lola and rhubarb I think KD might disagree with rules 17 and 18! He was very adamant that all 6 weeks of recovery should be described.Grin

And aren't children taught to use adverbs to enliven their writing? It's funny because you have all these rules drummed into you at school, then when you're older you can break them all! Hilary Mantell for example would get a lot of red pen on her work if she was at school!

icemistOBE · 09/03/2015 13:27

youngest having his nap, I should be doing something productive, but its more fun to catch up in here.

icemistOBE · 09/03/2015 13:30

lol! I wanted to slap CJ in that story he was too sickly sweet and good.

OP posts:
cjwoofwoof · 09/03/2015 13:46

orphan Rupert did say as he was leaving that he knew what he was letting himself in for when he signed the Damage Waiver, but was shocked at the brute force you exerted for such a small boned lady. He felt it was the size of the icebergs that caused him to lose balance and catastrophically crumple his doughnuts. He felt reassured, however, when I showed him close up that not all icebergs are the same and promised to insist on a sports bra get-out clause the next time he visits you.

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 13:50

That's why I was surprised by the comment about adverbs orphan. However, I did sit down and write a little bit this morning trying not to use them and it's possible if you think hard about it all the time which is probably where the point about writing word by word comes from. However, I'm very tempted to download a Stephen King novel onto my kindle and look for some examples of him using them. It must be impossible to avoid using them all the time. I'd better not comment on the research points because I haven't always applied my bits very subtly so that's food for thought.

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 13:55

cjwoof and orphan I am getting a little concerned that this 'disagreement' could reach litigation stage. Do you think that some independent arbitration over this matter might be necessary?

Nickel45 · 09/03/2015 14:11

Just read that article ... Just confirms to me that I am best not writing anything! But my DS is in year 3 and they often have homework where their instructions are to use interesting adverbs and adjectives. Last week they had to use fronted adverbials. But the kids didn't seem to know what they were, nor did the mums, and even the explanation one mum found online didn't help .... So who knows if we used them or not!! Think maths is more my forte!

cjwoofwoof · 09/03/2015 14:16

Ooh no, no, no Rhu I think between us, me and orphan have got Rupert well and truly covered preferably in jam and cream

orphan · 09/03/2015 14:24

I don't think Rupert read the small print when he signed - he's contractually obliged to give me the ride of my life visit on a monthly basis and there is no get out clause.

orphan · 09/03/2015 14:26

And we'll be trying out some fronted adverbials.

orphan · 09/03/2015 14:27

Maybe even some rear ones if he's up for it.

Rhubarb01 · 09/03/2015 14:32

I haven't actually read a Stephen King novel, ever, but I did take a preview look at one just now and did find one example but it looks as if it's not his writing style to use them very much, if at all. Perhaps the best advice is to use everything sparingly. Well, after wasting a lot of time on that rather than doing things I should be doing, I had better go off and do some work and let you ladies move onto far more sensible topics. Sorry, don't know what a fronted adverbial is - possibly a new move that cjwoof or orphan are perfecting to try out on unsuspecting Rupert next time he ventures near Woof Manor or Orphan Hall!

Nickel45 · 09/03/2015 14:32

Yep, I'd certainly be interested in working out what can be done with a fronted (or rear) adverbial is in that case!

cjwoofwoof · 09/03/2015 14:33

Oh dear orphan I think Rupert is well and truly screwed. The moral of this story of course is always read the small print. Either that or buy an extra large tub of vaseline
