Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

Laura is smug as fuck.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/03/2015 20:16

I don't like curry (wimp) but that looks delicious too. Good job, Ozzie.

DuffyMoon · 26/03/2015 20:17

Can't bear smuggery

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:18

I thought the duck 3 ways looked dreadful, but what do I know...

GrouchyKiwi · 26/03/2015 20:18

Tough break for these guys. Any other round and the women would have gone through.

Trills · 26/03/2015 20:19

If you do duck 3 ways and then have t do duck ANOTHER way, that's a challenge.

Halsall · 26/03/2015 20:19

Hang on, didn't John say at the start that it was more a chance to show what they could do well? Suddenly Aussie girl is being dissed for not being complicated enough, even though they really liked the dish. Make your minds up!

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:21

Exactly Halsall. They change the rules as they go along

iklboo · 26/03/2015 20:22

Late to the party. DS wanted to watch Clarence (do I win Mum Of The Day or at least a large glass of white for letting him?).

Woss goin' on?

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:22

2 through ikiboo, we're not sure one of them was the right one!

GrouchyKiwi · 26/03/2015 20:23

Big man's dish is well confused.

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:23

We have more balls in a suggestive shape this time Grin

DuffyMoon · 26/03/2015 20:24

Uh oh ...holey pasta... People like her inspire me to cook cos I am brilliant

Halsall · 26/03/2015 20:25

Duffy GrinGrin

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:27

There we go. The Balls

JuneFromBethesda · 26/03/2015 20:27

Ooh, i like the look of The Balls. Yum Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 26/03/2015 20:29

Has anyone tried arrancini? They look delicious.

Trills · 26/03/2015 20:29

I've had arancini out - they were lovely.

I've tried to make them at home and totally failed.

Yangsun · 26/03/2015 20:30

I love arancini, wish the smug woman had gone.

JuneFromBethesda · 26/03/2015 20:30

I think Carluccio's has arrancini on the menu sometimes, Grouchy I've never tried them as I always get lured away by the sage ravioli [drools]

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:32

Beetroot!

DuffyMoon · 26/03/2015 20:32

Beetroot lorry has been then Hmm

DuffyMoon · 26/03/2015 20:33

Mmmmmmm scallop smoothie

Halsall · 26/03/2015 20:33

Salvo was always eating arancini in the Montalbano progs, but his balls were triangles (oooh missus)

FFS, not beetroot AGAIN!

Roussette · 26/03/2015 20:33

Greg has a new set of faces I haven't seen pulled before. Not pleasant.
