Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

Classic dessert, Rousette.

dementedma · 03/04/2015 20:47

Just a nice pud. Simple brief

ilovesooty · 03/04/2015 20:49

Nice one Emma.

Trills · 03/04/2015 20:50

Sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream - mmmmmmmmmm

Roussette · 03/04/2015 20:51

Awwww I like Beth!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/04/2015 20:51

I love the idea of sticky toffee pudding but always forget it has bloody dates in it. Emma's looked delicious, though.

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:52

Don't mess with sticky toffee pudding!

Roussette · 03/04/2015 20:52

Note to all contestants - do NOT do banana tarte tatin!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/04/2015 20:53

Damn you, John. I am now pondering making pancakes for breakfast tomorrow.

dementedma · 03/04/2015 20:53

Awww,poor Ranvir!

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:53

Why couldn't he just make a normal apple tarte tatin

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:54

Arabellas expression!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/04/2015 20:54

Ranvir for the boot?

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:54

I think Ranvir is going. But 2 go don't they?

Roussette · 03/04/2015 20:55

Is it just me thinking this or has JT got really jowly?!

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:55

I think arabella and Ranvir

dementedma · 03/04/2015 20:56

Arabella to go

ilovesooty · 03/04/2015 20:57

I wouldn't have put Arabella through the last round.

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:57

No I don't think I would have. She was very muddled and panicked

GrouchyKiwi · 03/04/2015 20:57

Fair enough there.

Agree with you, Rousette.

Roussette · 03/04/2015 20:57

I agree, ten minutes over time was toooooo much!

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:58

Oh I though 2 went

ilovesooty · 03/04/2015 20:58

I forget which guy lost out to her but that ten minutes late stuff should have ruled her out then.

hideandseekpig · 03/04/2015 20:59

Ranvir hasn't really done anything good since his butter chicken though has he?

GrouchyKiwi · 03/04/2015 20:59

I don't think Gregg should say things like "you're on fire" when that is a literal possibility.
