Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

He be a gentleman...

MissWimpyDimple · 22/03/2015 22:00

He was equally fabulous as Mitchell... Put that weedy Edward vampire thing to shame...

JazzAnnNonMouse · 22/03/2015 22:02

Oh that was good!!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 22/03/2015 22:03

Good grief that was hot.

I need to go to sleep now, no chance!

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:11

I am gobsmacked. The Poldark purists will understand. That ending made no sense! Why did he marry her? He is meant to only do that when he discovers she is carrying his child! And he drops Elizabeth in it because she has just promised to come and live with him because her marriage to Francis is floundering. And Demelza lives forever with the doubt in her mind that Ross only marries her for decency's sake and that he really loves Elizabeth!

Half the angst in the story has been eliminated in one fell swoop. As I say, I am gobsmacked.

Oh well. The two of them have the chemistry of a glass of warm milk anyway. They seem more like modern teens having a shag for the sheer hell of it than passionate lovers.

Twinklestein · 22/03/2015 22:12

Im sorry it's not working for me.

Demelza has very pretty hair but she cannot act for toffee and she has no screen presence. AT acts her off the screen.

Someone should have stuffed some socks down her dress, I think that would hace distracted me from her hunch.

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:16

Yes, I agree Demelza can't act and has a horrid figure. In the middle of the 'seduction' scene - if you could call that seduction! - I admit I turned to dh and said 'that body isn't attractive, is it? please tell me it isn't.' And he agreed - way too thin and no breasts!

I don't want to upset AT fans, but I didn't think his acting in the seduction scene was up to much either. Something seemed very stilted.

Viviennemary · 22/03/2015 22:18

Watched a little bit of it tonight. It was dire. Demelza is hopeless. I liked the previous one but it wasn't pefect but miles better than this.

SwedishEdith · 22/03/2015 22:19

She hasn't got a horrid figure at all!

Sazzle41 · 22/03/2015 22:19

Yes Twinklestein... The thing is its meant to be a real romp of a bodice ripper (to me/if you saw the original)... and theres nothing worth ripping under either Demelza's or Elizabeth's bodice. They dont need to be huge, just a bit of something is sexy, but nothing is.... somehow not in the spirit of what you want out of a historical romp. It needs to be like The Tudors, or The Musketeers ie. both male & female totty. Now ther are a historical Romp with a capital R...men with shirts off, heaving bosoms etc etc.

MissWimpyDimple · 22/03/2015 22:19

Ok so that makes sense. It does seem very rushed and of course extremely unlikely for the times.

Personally I thought the chemistry was good, but let's face it I wasn't looking at herWink

Elizabeth is dreadful. Very weak and unconvincing.

WyrdSmyth · 22/03/2015 22:20

Have to agree. I feel that I would have been far better suited for the seduction scene with Ross [admires fulsome norks]

snozzlemaid · 22/03/2015 22:22

No, no, no Dumbledoresgirl in the books he does not marry her because she is pregnant. That was the bit which most fans and Winston Graham himself hated about the original series.
This adaptation is as the books, only slightly more rushed.

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:23

I will correct my previous post then. For 'horrid' figure read 'stick-like, unwomanly, unsexy' figure.

NorahDentressangle · 22/03/2015 22:25

Demelza is a simple country girl, and that is how she is being played. She's fallen for her boss.
But she isn't naïve so knows there is an attraction between them.
Ross is attracted to Demelza, he wants to defy his evil fellow gentrymen, he can't claim to be one with his workers then shag his servant, so he either kicks her out or marries her.
So they marry.
I think the acting is fine.

MissWimpyDimple · 22/03/2015 22:25

Wouldn't a poor wench be likely to be pretty stick thin? She was really poor and spends all day working. Plus isn't she about 15?

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:26

Oh ok snozzlemaid. I confess I can't remember details of the books (though I am glad they put in the putting on of Ross' mother's dress as I do remember that from the books and it was omitted from the original series).

So he marries her because he is sleeping with her? And he doesn't persuade Elizabeth to run away from Trenwith to escape Francis only to then change his mind because he is marrying Demelza to give the baby his name?

Travelledtheworld · 22/03/2015 22:27

I thought the scene where he is unlacing her dress was very erotic actually.
Shock

TheCraicDealer · 22/03/2015 22:28

I have been watching this thinking sure it would have been the fashion to emphasise certain assets (ahem) and a bit of padding in and below that area might have been expected. But describing women like myself who are small of boob as "stick-like, unwomanly and unsexy" is more than a little bit shit.

redautumnleaves · 22/03/2015 22:28

I would kill to have Demelza's figure - I think she she looks amazing. And even if she did have a 'horrid figure' he can still like her for being her surely?

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:29

She is supposed to be 17 when she starts sleeping with Ross and should have fattened up a bit after living in Ross' house for 2 years (or 4 if we go by the books). It wasn't her skinniness I meant so much as her lack of breasts.

Travelledtheworld · 22/03/2015 22:30

Demelza is lovely. Hair, skin, unpretentious, cheerful and she can make a great pie!

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/03/2015 22:31

I may be small of boob too for all you know. I have just told dh we are discussing whether Demelza has a nice figure or not. His response: Surely you should be discussing whether she has a figure at all.

You might not like it, and I realise some men like their women totally flat chested, but as others have said before me, some more shape would be more in keeping.

Viviennemary · 22/03/2015 22:33

She's far too thin. Her figure is awful.

ChoochiWhoo · 22/03/2015 22:33

The only chesty woman in the entire show is prudie...That would be an interesting plot twist lol Grin
