Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

I have been to Cornwall (right down to Penzance area) virtually every year since DH (family connections) and I met (35 in November) At different times of year , and with varying weather. It is always beautiful (nearly as beautiful as my native North Wales), and never that touristy if you avoid St Ives.. Going in May with DH and both DDs to scatter MIL ashes. Can't wait .Disappointed theydidn't use one of the great Cornish houses though . Godolphin would have been good

VelvetGreen · 17/03/2015 23:10

Godolphin was used as Trenwith in the first series, i think.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 17/03/2015 23:42

It got burnt down then though, Velvet Wink

Oh yes, Clemency. Don't they finally move the table to have a ball in about book 10 of the series (The Loving Cup)?

Hmm, hadn't thought about the Poldark books for years but it's all coming back...

NuzzleandScratch · 18/03/2015 08:25

With regard to the weather, I read somewhere that the weather was so good during filming, they had to add clouds in post production!

VelvetGreen · 18/03/2015 10:58

I think the current one they are using for Trenwith is closer to the books

But it's not in Cornwall (stamps feet) - not much Cotswold stone in these parts! It is a wonderful house though.

In the RE book he talks about filming the final scenes at Godolphin and then shooting at Boconnoc, which was used in the second series. He writes that he had an immediate emotional reaction to Boconnoc and didn't like it at all, as it seemed to symbolise the enormous gap between the rich and the poor in C18/19th Cornwall. Will be interesting to see if they burn Trenwith down in this series!

WetAugust · 18/03/2015 12:10

It's entertaining but I still prefer the RE and AR version. AT is not my dream man.

Casting Dorcus's dim housemaid as Verity was a bad move especially when Poldark is aired in the same slot as Larkrise ...

Godolphin is an amzing house and well worth a visit, especially in May when the primroses and bluebells are in flower. You could imagine Poldark living there. It's available to rent as a holiday home. the National Trust lady proudly showed us its new digital Aga.

OnlyLovers · 18/03/2015 13:08

I like Demelza! I think she's playing it young, gawky and rough at the moment so that she can (presumably; I don't know the story) blossom later and wow everyone by turning into a 'lady'.

I love Verity and I liked the captain, although I didn't realise until reading it here that it was yer man from Hinterland. And I would have been interested in his talk about ships and sails. Blush [sad case]

jazzsyncopation · 18/03/2015 13:20

also heartbroken about verity and the captain : really like george tho...kind of a bit like steerforth in david copperfield

susiedaisy · 18/03/2015 15:15

Ah Hinterland that's where I've seen the captain before.

CadieAgain · 18/03/2015 20:16

yy about Demelza. I think we may be able to track her progress by her attempts at a curtsey. The first one she did when meeting Verity she almost fell right over and with the next one she just almost stumbled into the table, so getting there...

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 18/03/2015 20:47

Now I never saw Larkrise & I always thought Verity I, though sweet & lovely, was much too pretty. This one is spot on for me & very endearing. (I can imagine her in the role you describe though, August. I think she's probably carving out a good career as the plain sister/dozy maid. She'll never be out of work Grin)

woodhill · 18/03/2015 21:18

she is Janice Dutovsky's daughter and a great actress.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 18/03/2015 21:22

Er - who?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 18/03/2015 21:24

I have never heard of Janice Dutovsky so I just googled, and Google haven't heard of her either.

snozzlemaid · 18/03/2015 21:25

Is she the one who was in One Foot in the Grave?

snozzlemaid · 18/03/2015 21:29

Just looked her up. It's Janine Duvitski and that was who I was thinking of. I can see the resemblance.

woodhill · 18/03/2015 21:34

yes sorry of course i meant her.

now who was Dutovsky? some literary character?

OnBlueDolphinStreet · 18/03/2015 22:32

I saw Janine Duvitski in "Charlie's Aunt" at the Young Vic back in the 70's. Great acting!

OnBlueDolphinStreet · 18/03/2015 22:39

I was a big fan of the RE Poldark, but this version is growing on me. It feels fresh, not a slavish copy of the original.

Mr Turner is very easy on the eye, and I even like the theme tune.

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/03/2015 01:13

Didnt realise they did use Godolphin in the first series Velvet Green (it was aired when I was relatively young andbeforeI ever went to Cornwall though I remember enjoying it very much ) . I think its only since the NT acquired it that you have been able to visit it .Though as we took my DM there it must be at least 20 years. Will have to get hold of a DVD and watch it again- after this series finishes though...

AnneEyhtMeyer · 19/03/2015 19:02

I accidentally bought the first three books today. I was in Costco buying stuff for the PTA and the next minute the set was in my trolley. Think I'll take them on holiday - fancy a good beach read!

BMW6 · 19/03/2015 19:56

Well no wonder I thought the actress playing Verity looked like Janine Duvitski - I kept thinking it can't be her, she'd be too old now!! Never occurred to me that it could be a daughter....

To those who have never heard of her - you've never seen Abigail's Party??? Shock

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 19/03/2015 21:05

Er - it's Janice Dutovsky we've never heard of, to be fair!
