Brilliant ending. Tony's home is looking for his son, he's obsessed and is mentally ill, clutching at straws and suspecting any boys around Ollie's age.
Ollie is dead, end of. Terribly sad but a wonderful drama.

Nancy66 · 17/12/2014 10:52

I agree with The Telegraph comments. It was a piss poor ending to an otherwise good series.

I think the viewer needs a complete ending, otherwise what's the point? The open 'you decide' ending is lazy and just smacks of writers not knowing where to go.

Broadchurch worked well because the story was pieced together and the red herrings were explained. The Missing didn't do that.

pinkfrocks · 17/12/2014 11:27

It's Olly BTW.

I think it was a rubbish ending. we all knew there'd be more red herrings than in a fish market, so we can't complain on that one, but Tony's beard and weird walk were just too much- sure we were meant to think there was a paedophile eyeing up those Russian kids- and the irony was - oh yes- it was Tony!
But no body of Olly- a tease too far.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/12/2014 12:20

Hmm, bit torn here. Great acting, but seemed a bit of a cop-out after 7 brilliant weeks - the semi-deathbed confession Hmm. I don't have a problem with the uncertainty of the ending, think tha'ts probably quite realistic, but I have a big problem with all the red herrings. I don't think it worked as a plot device to have the Ian Garret/Vincent/Greg/Malik story lines as a "sub plot". We only have a vested interest in those characters if they are central to the story, which, in the end, they weren't at all. Felt like I'd just watched 2 separate programmes for 8 weeks Confused. What was the point of having Vincent doing some "big reveal" to Malik, only for it to have zero impact/consequence on teh main plotline? Very shoddy. Really annoys me when a series is doing very well, and then it's almost as if the writers think,, "ooh, this is popular, we could eke another series out of this". Not necessary. Fawlty Towers had 12 episodes in total - still a classic and finished on a high.
Ho hum.

ToffeeCaramel · 17/12/2014 12:31

Just watched the Russian boy bit and I see what people mean about the boy having bald patches at the back of his hair. I hadn't noticed that before.

Thecatisatwat · 17/12/2014 12:36

I think it was a brilliant ending. In fairness to the production team they didn't cheat us in any way (apart from the Ian/boat scene which I still think is unfair because of the untrue subtitle), it was our own minds that linked the paedophile ring with Ollie's disappearance. I think Julien was talking to the viewers as well as Tony in the car. Are we sick enough bastards to have preferred a more interesting ending to a story even if it involved a small child being abused, tortured and then murdered/ kept locked in a basement rather than being killed quickly?

And a child is far more likely to be killed in a RTA than be abducted by a paedophile ring. Well done to those pps who predicted following the fox and Alain knocking down Ollie. Are you related to the writers or just very clever?!

What I find interesting is that most people (including me) thought that the series was inspired by the McCann story when actually it has more in common with April Jones' murder. We thought we were watching a story about an abduction by murderous paedophiles when actually we were watching a story about a traffic accident. Mark Bridger claimed to have accidently killed April Jones in a traffic accident when really he was a murderous paedophile.

And I think the ending was deliberately ambiguous, we're not supposed to know whether the boy is Ollie or not. It just shows that Tony will never be able to move on. After the boat scenes I don't entirely trust the stick man picture snow scenes, they could be real or they could be imagined by an unhinged Tony.

(And I'm glad Mark wasn't involved because I was starting to doubt my own sanity on that one because I didn't see him do anything suspicious!)

The drawing in the house is annoying me a little, why would an injured Ollie stop to draw a picture on the wall? And how would Sylvie not notice Alain was still drinking? (The barman implied Alain was a regular, and knew which drink he wanted)

Clawdy · 17/12/2014 12:52

Just seen a mention online that the second series will have a different cast and is nothing to do with Ollie.Sad

Nancy66 · 17/12/2014 12:53

aren't we meant to assume that Tony probably drew the picture in the cellar?

OttiliaVonBCup · 17/12/2014 12:55

No, Karl said he'd left it so the boy would not disappear completely.

Can't have been Tony.

Nancy66 · 17/12/2014 12:59

Did he? I missed that...!

Thecatisatwat · 17/12/2014 12:59

Right, I agree, I wish Julien had never phoned Tony about Georges because the idea of Tony wandering the world, never finding peace and going slowly mad because of it is horrific.

BeyondTheTreelights · 17/12/2014 13:00

Is there a link around for the trailer for the second series at the end? I missed it as my connection died

OttiliaVonBCup · 17/12/2014 13:01

He dud when they gave him the money.

BeyondTheTreelights · 17/12/2014 13:02

There are plenty of partners of alcoholics who dont know they are drinking, or have no other proof than suspecting their partner has been drinking but for no real reason. That bit wasnt weird.

Thecatisatwat · 17/12/2014 13:02

I think Ollie probably drew the picture because he was scared and drawing the picture comforted him. How he got hold of a pencil is what I'd like to know...

BingoBonkers · 17/12/2014 13:02

I think Roisin nails it. It's the same as the families who have missing children and no answers, no bodies. Sadly Ben Needham, Maddie McCann to name just two out of probably hundreds of missing children. As frustrating as the ending was for the viewer it does depict real life for many.

If my husband or partner was supposed to be a recovered alcoholic there is no way in hell that I wouldn't be able to spot he had had a drink!

BeyondTheTreelights · 17/12/2014 13:05

Thecatis without derailing... with mm's case, there is no proof of abduction either, theres no reason to think that it wasnt an rta of a child who wandered off.

Indianashopgirl · 17/12/2014 13:05

Think I must be more of a Tony than an Emily.

Overall it was excellent and I'm sure it's inevitable that we will pick over it.
Just disappointed that there was no mention of Malik and what was driving him to solve the 'crime' after the conversation with Ziane in the car when he talked about seeing it as a sign etc.

Plus Vincent's relationship with Ian and what he had said to Malik.

I think I'm more sad about a needless loss of life and the stupidity of those men. Seems a bit low key after all the high drama of Tony beating up Vincent & murdering Ian. Rini and Antoine getting their throats slashed ..

My DH has not let it drop that he guessed that Alain was drunk driving and Georges covered it up. We may yet have our own drama unfolding here later if he doesn't stop being so smug! Xmas Wink

shins · 17/12/2014 13:07

Another thing- Ollie's scarf, wouldn't it have been covered in blood? How did the woman who owned the house find it, was Zieg the worst fixer ever, leaving the drawing and the scarf behind?!

Thecatisatwat · 17/12/2014 13:22

Beyond Exactly. As far as I know the only evidence for MM being abducted was that someone saw a young blond girl being carried away. I think we hear of cases of children being taken by paedophiles, combine that with all the cases of historic child abuse and then automatically assume that all cases of missing children involve paedophiles (IYSWIM) I think The Missing used that to its advantage.

bryonyelf · 17/12/2014 13:22

Right, I know it is only TV but I am hiding this thread as everytime it pops up on "my threads" I am reminded of the pool of blood at the bottom of the stairs.

madmother1 · 17/12/2014 13:55

shins - i think i saw the scarf, fall into a box and it was left behind. The box was then given to charity. This was in an earlier episode. I think I need to re watch all 8 episodes...if only i had time :-)

Abra1d · 17/12/2014 14:02

themissing2014, that is VERY intriguing.
