limited - I totally agree about Stella going alone into the forest to look for Rose. She was following the instructions of a serial killer! He could have set an ambush for her...there's no way she'd have been allowed to go alone to investigate.

and, oh yes, let's handcuff Belfast's most wanted man to a policeman that's nowhere near as well built or strong as he is - because that couldn't possibly go wrong could it? !

beaglesaresweet · 19/12/2014 11:33

sorry for many missing letters in my post!

beaglesaresweet · 19/12/2014 11:37

limit, yes, high heels in the forest, and not arresting Jimmy in/after refuge scene - ridiculous.

feathertree · 19/12/2014 12:05

The refuge scene REALLY annoyed me - women are stronger than portrayed there. Wouldn't just run round like headless chickens.

Shock You know that do you? What did you expect them to do exactly? One of them had the foresight to remove the children immediately. Another sounded the alarm. He was asked to leave. And we're talking about abused women, victims of domestic violence. Then the entrance of a violent, angry, physically much stronger man.

Bakeoffcakes · 19/12/2014 12:09

I agree with you Feather..

He also had a gun!

FamiliesShareGerms · 19/12/2014 12:28

The gun didn't come out immediately though - I didn't have much sense that it was a particularly secure refuge

Other irritants:

  • Stella wandering around the woods on her own in high heels (where were the undercover police posing as dog walkers etc?)
  • useless beardy policeman more useless than before (he wasn't this bad in the first series, was he?)
  • Stella not speaking to Rose before or after getting the boot open (she showed such compassion to the victims, and determination to find Rose before too late, wouldn't she have said something to calm her, assure her she was safe, they were the police not Spector??)
  • the complete absence of Katie's mother
  • has everyone forgotten about the Monroe sub-plot? (Maybe it was like Emma in Friends - a great plot device for a while, but difficult to sustain and no-one really cares...)

What happened to the corruption sub-plot?

Sorry Families, I didn't notice you'd also mentioned it the corruption sub-plot.

Yes, you would call out to Rose, wouldn't you?

nancy66 You surely wouldn't go into either the outbuilding or the forest alone?

And Jimmy was like Forrest Gump in his ability always to be in the right place at the right time throughout the series.

feathertree · 19/12/2014 12:42

I expected him to be whacked with the big, empty vase right beside them a bit sooner.

The whacking with the heavy vase was last resort measure after other attempts to make him leave had proved futile and his wife in extreme danger of being hurt.

I don't think you do get it actually. You said they REALLY annoyed you because they ran about like headless chickens etc etc And they didn't actually do that, even after the gun was produced. Their attempts to defend her were courageous I thought.

FibonacciSeries · 19/12/2014 12:47

I actually thought the scene at the women's refuge was quite realistic. People only deliver ninja kicks and vases to the back of the head in films. In real life, people freeze, shout, or run around like headless chicken.p

diddl · 19/12/2014 12:49

"And Jimmy was like Forrest Gump in his ability always to be in the right place at the right time "

GrinGrinGrin

LuannDelaney · 19/12/2014 12:50

If they make a third series of this I won't watch it.
The thing that annoyed me the most was the amount of resources they used to follow PS, which if they had arrested him could have been diverted to finding Rose Stagg.

Heels99 · 19/12/2014 12:51

Why did Stella rush to help paul when shot and not dishy police fella? Why would she try to save the murderer not her colleague?

diddl · 19/12/2014 12:55

"Why did Stella rush to help paul when shot and not dishy police fella? "

Because she'd fallen under his spell the same as the schoolgirl?HmmHmm

or she felt some connection due to her childhoodHmmHmm

Whatever the reason, I thought that it was shit & unbelievable.

And Paul grinning smuggly as she cradled himHmmHmmHmm

2rebecca · 19/12/2014 12:56

I think the battered wives response was realistic. If these women could deal assertively with aggressive men they wouldn't be in a women's refuge as aggressive bastards would never have got a second date or chance to persistently abuse them.
I hope the person who gave the refuge details away over the phone to Spectre gets disciplined.
I didn't understand why they had to take Spectre with them when they said he'd told them where Rose was and why they weren't combing the area in a systematic manner wearing sensible clothing or using their infrared apparatus to scan the area. Stella alone in her high heels was just silly. If Spectre had to come I don't see why they couldn't have kept him in the car and agree that the helicopter could have spotted the journalists car if it spotted the journalist. I also would have expected the helicopter to spot the car Rose was in as it must have driven down a track to get there and be in an area of thin trees to get there.

2rebecca · 19/12/2014 12:58

At least they were there in daylight and not faffing around the forest in the dark in the manner well loved by TV crime writers.

It just wasn't believable for me that Stella had fallen for the serial killer and would cradle him that way.

I don't think this series portrays any of its key female characters in a good light.

And yes to all the other holes - padlocking to the weaker police officer, in the forest alone etc.

Where would a series 3 take it?

It was the way she was holding him in a caring way.

Not trying to stem the bleeding whilst screaming"don't you die on me you bastard, you'll make it to court & prison"
(or something like that!)

VashtaNerada · 19/12/2014 13:56

2Rebecca - I'm sure it's unintentional but your comments on DV survivors are quite unhelpful and a bit victim-blaming. These things don't happen because women lack assertiveness.

ThreeQuartersEmpty · 19/12/2014 13:59

theres a deleted scene on iplayer. doesnt add much too it though. its just before Stella goes to bed with yer man the dectective. stella says she lost her father at the same age as Katie is, and that she didnt fall in love with a serial killer but she did get involved with older men.

Bits I have issues with:
All the uniformed police are wearing flak jackets. The others would have been as well.
Spectre would not have been handcuffed like that to one mans arm.
As soon as they located Rose, Spectre would have been bundled back into the car and sped away back to the cells, not been allowed to stay and watch.

NeverFreezeTurkeys, I don't think they were offensive. As a victim of quite severe domestic violence myself, I also thought they women were being portrayed as weak and helpless. Once you're out of a DV situation you're stronger and more courageous when faced with that again, like his wife actually did stand up to him at the end. Also, one of the main reasons DV victims tolerate the abuse is because of the emotional attachment to the abuser and lack of self worth. This doesn't apply when he is a stranger hitting someone else so its easier to stand up to him. How many of them were they? 6-8? Between them 6 women could easily overpower one shithead of a man.

I was quite angry at that scene. I felt it portrayed women as weak and helpless. I know everyone reacts to DV differently but I couldn't help feeling dissapointed.
