Anyone else been watching this? It's on at 10pm on Thursdays, on BBC Four. No idea why they've hidden this in such a graveyard slot. It's gorgeous. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted.
It's billed as a sitcom, but it's not a-laugh-per-line stuff. Reminds me a bit of Gavin and Stacey, in that it's really warm and gentle and creates a completely believable little universe. I've just re-watched Episode 1 before it disappears off iplayer.
(erm...maybe I'm developing a bit of a crush on Andy, played by Mackenzie Crook, who also wrote and directed the whole thing. I mean, please! It's Gareth off the Office!!!)

Love it. It's a warm hug of a tv show. Hope they make another series. Or at least the odd special.

I saw some real life detectorists in a field recently. I gave them a little cheer 🌳🏆

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 24/01/2017 20:24

I discovered it a little while ago on netflix and love it. Very soothing Smile

TheHiphopopotamus · 24/01/2017 20:35

I love this too!

I remember a slight furore before it was broadcast with actual detectorists being pissed off that someone might be making fun of them, but I forgot to watch it when it aired.

Caught it on Netflix and I love it! Wish there more series though.

NotJanine · 26/01/2017 12:52

I've not read the whole thread as I've only watched the 1st series so far. Going to try and ration the 2nd series!

I'd heard about this before and thought it sounded very dull. Instead it is a wonderful little gem. I like the description above of it being like a warm hug Smile

I think it must be quite difficult, and brave, to make something that is so understated and subtle.

NotJanine · 19/02/2017 11:11

I've now watched all the episodes

As near perfect a programme as I've ever seen. The scenery, casting and writing are all wonderful.

'I feel like I've been groomed' had me crying with laughter.

Series 3 starts on Wednesday 8th at 10pm BBC4.

mrwalkensir · 05/11/2017 14:35

excited Grin

Andylion · 05/11/2017 16:38

A third series. Yay!

Kinraddie · 11/11/2017 14:31

Watched the first episode of the new series; was great to have it back. Love the meetings in the village hall and the character of Sheila in particular. She’s so funny. Why no mention of Andy & family’s time in Africa (?).

LooseAtTheSeams · 12/11/2017 17:57

Sheila is excellent! But yes, I’m puzzled - quite a bit seems to have happened with no explanation about the Africa trip! I have to say I really loved the first episode of the new series, though, and have watched it twice so am hoping things are going to be explained in the next few episodes.

spiderlight · 14/11/2017 10:06

There was a Christmas special after series 2, which I haven't seen and can't find online, so I guess a lot of the unexplained stuff was in that :( Might have to buy the DVD!

CaptainHammer · 14/11/2017 10:55

I love this show. It’s so nice. I’m sad series 3 will be the last one, though I didn’t realise they were doing a 3rd series at all so better than nothing!

brasty · 15/11/2017 16:58

I love this show. The writing is amazing. I preferred the first series though where most of the time, nit much happened. That is fairly true to life, where we go on with our daily routines, but it is rare for anything dramatic to happen. I think they spoiled series 2 a bit with the dramatic find.
I think the first series is the best explanation of Englishness I have ever seen. Wish it had more critical acclaim, it deserves it.

Walnutwhiplash · 15/11/2017 17:15

spiderlight The Christmas special is on itunes (a bargain at £1.89!)

2rebecca · 15/11/2017 18:12

I love this show, love the music. The scenes with living with MIL and newly found daughter are very realistic. I didn't like the wind farm being an evil development though, better that than a power plant or fracking.

squiz81 · 15/11/2017 20:35

We loved the end of episode 1, so beautiful and well shot.

My husband is a detectorist so a lot of the jokes resonate with us!

Jellyheadbang · 15/11/2017 23:36

I love this show, very excited to hear I can watch the Christmas special on iTunes!

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/11/2017 21:57

I'd missed the first two series but have now caught up with them and the Christmas Special.

Perfect, perfect TV. Beautifully observed, cast and acted. And the music.

Just lovely.

brasty · 17/11/2017 22:01

The music is perfect.
I do think Lane's new girlfriend is too attractive for him though.

brasty · 17/11/2017 22:02

Sorry Lance

Slartybartfast · 24/11/2017 23:26

Just enjoyed all 3 episodes of the third series 😁 hope the rest is still on Netflix

Persephone31 · 26/11/2017 22:38

What I love is it's so believable. The characters are normal, if slightly, eccentric people and what happens to them is completely normal and believable.....and yet it's not boring in the slightest! Lovely programme

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/11/2017 22:40

Yes, every scene, every line, every character is just so beautifully crafted.

And the music!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/11/2017 20:53

i love it!

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/11/2017 10:04

@SchadenfreudePersonified I can just see Vlad and Vanka as Detectorists! Grin
