Anyone else been watching this? It's on at 10pm on Thursdays, on BBC Four. No idea why they've hidden this in such a graveyard slot. It's gorgeous. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted.
It's billed as a sitcom, but it's not a-laugh-per-line stuff. Reminds me a bit of Gavin and Stacey, in that it's really warm and gentle and creates a completely believable little universe. I've just re-watched Episode 1 before it disappears off iplayer.
(erm...maybe I'm developing a bit of a crush on Andy, played by Mackenzie Crook, who also wrote and directed the whole thing. I mean, please! It's Gareth off the Office!!!)

Two of Phil Mitchell's exes appear on the show: Lucy Benjamin and Sophie Thompson. Sophie was the one who tortured Ben.

scratchandsniff · 04/11/2014 12:49

I love it! Been telling everyone they should watch it. I think we all know a Lance and Andy in real life. Its so simple, which I think makes it so watchable and endearingly funny.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 07/11/2014 14:36

Just watched the last episode. Loved this series so much. Gorgeous.

Selks · 07/11/2014 22:53

I've just watched the last one too. Lovely ending! Wonderful series.

Selks · 07/11/2014 22:55

I really like how the characters of Lance and Andy were gradually fleshed out as the series went on. Lance in particular was extremely well done I thought.

Homsa · 08/11/2014 15:39

So pleased there will be a second series next year. I can picture the scene: Andy and Lance detecting in a muddy field, with a baby strapped to Andy's chest...
I also want to know more about the characters' back stories. Why is Lance, who can identify a butcher's apostrophy and recognise the George Washington resignation speech, working as a forklift driver? And surely Andy can't have spent the last 30 years temping and studying for an Archaeology degree...

Yes good point about the back stories. Glad to hear there will be another series.

aoife24 · 09/11/2014 07:28

I like it too, the gentle, slightly lugubrious quality to it. It reminds me of another show a few years ago about rival walking groups, with Ruth Jones in it, a bunch of odd bods really, does anyone remember that?
They're somehow very English comedies, quite nuanced.

DaMoves · 09/11/2014 07:31

Loved this - looking forward to a new series

Cooroo · 09/11/2014 07:31

Thanks for the thread - I thought this looked really promising but missedit. Now I know it was good I'm going to dig it out on catch up.

callamia · 09/11/2014 07:39

I saw the last one last night. It's so beautifully written, I think my heart broke about ten times.

Homsa · 09/11/2014 09:38

aoife, it was called The Great Outdoors, I liked that too! I like anything with Mark Heap in it...
The last shot of the final episode was just fantastic - as the friends head off to the pub, the camera pans down into the ground and you see that there actually IS an amazing treasure buried right there... and was there the faint outline of a ship in the grass as they walked off?
And the proposal scene was about as true to life as you can get (in my limited experience!) -
"Yeah okay then"

Loved the last episode, brilliant ending with the panning down through the ground to the treasure and yes there was definitely the outline of a ship on the field. My DD wanted them to turn back and find the treasure, but it would have ruined it if they had.

The writing was excellent - even when Andy said to Becky "I've found my gold" it didn't sound cheesy, just true to his character. I loved the wonderful scene of the open day and I laughed out loud when Lance moves to reveal the Queue Here sign!

Can't wait for next series.

Selks · 09/11/2014 14:50

It's strange....'Lance' and 'Andy' types are the kind of blokes I never give a second thought to that prop up the bar drinking real ale in my local pub. I shall give them a bit more time in future Smile

Thecroissantthief · 10/11/2014 09:24

That's it - these were quiet people, the sort of people that are virtually invisible to most except close friends and family, they don't conduct their lives dramatically, no eastenders type drama - so much harder to write this kind of drama, but oh so much more satisfying to watch when it's done well like in this programme.

MollyBdenum · 10/11/2014 21:52

I just saw the last episode. It was lovely, with just the right amount of happiness to the ending. My favourite part was when Becky and Sophie sat down and drank tea together from the flask.

GatoradeMeBitch · 22/01/2017 20:34

Bump - the second series is up on Netflix Smile

I think The Detectorists is on my All Time Top Ten, it's such a gorgeous TV show. I did notice the small budget this time around though - there is a scene where it's supposedly so windy a runaway trampoline rolls past Lance and Andy, but none of the trees or even foliage is moving in the slightest!

MoreThanUs · 22/01/2017 20:36

I absolutely love this programme - to anyone who hasn't seen it, watch it!

dudsville · 22/01/2017 20:39

It's one of our favourite series. Only 2 series but a Christmas episode as well. And we bought the theme tune as it's so lovely.

Kinraddie · 24/01/2017 11:25

Absolutely loved this series, hard to choose my favourite character but think it is Sheila, Terry's wife. Her home-made lemonade always goes down a treat! And when her and Lance were talking about children and how much they missed, brought a tear to my eye. There is obviously a history to her character there.

pigglepaggle · 24/01/2017 18:10

I've been watching it too on Netflix or Amazon forget which. Absolutely love it. It is so gentle and low key. No sex, swearing or violence. Hope they make another series. Love the theme tune too.

GatoradeMeBitch · 24/01/2017 18:18

I hope they get another series too. Fingers crossed!

littlejeopardy · 24/01/2017 18:22

Ooh I loved the first series, so beautifully done. Toby Jones is just amazing in everything, isn't he?

Alwaysfrank · 24/01/2017 19:08

Also loved this. I missed it on telly but bought the DVD of both series. We re-watched just before Christmas and spotted some things we missed the first time around. Gorgeous TV!

Busybrie · 24/01/2017 19:13

I watched both series and Christmas special last year and loved it, really sad there is not going to be third series though. I live where it is filmed, so lovely to see where I walk the dog etc and really strange to see the Co-Op on TV!
