Oops Blush apologies! Your mum dies make me laugh though! Grin we require an update this week!

MarthasHarbour · 29/09/2014 09:33

No no no epic typo fail Blush Shock

Your mum DOES make me laugh!!

Davros · 29/09/2014 14:16

Cilla did have a knack for choosing good songs, or having them chosen for her, and covering Dionne Warwick's songs was a bit of a policy, some of which were written for DW by Burt Baccarat and Hal David. Quite prepared to believe that DW is a diva! I think Step Inside Love was written especially for Cilla by Lennon and McCartney so she didn't just nick other people's songs. Her voice in the low range is good but once it gets loud and high it's awful! Harsh and screechy! Like this Shock. Looking forward to tonight's episode.

Pixel · 29/09/2014 18:44

I didn't realise until I read this thread that so many people hate Cilla! I've never really taken much notice of her despite being a child of the 60s, my mum was more into Cliff and The Carpenters so I know all their songs Grin.

I'm enjoying the authentic 60s feel of it all though, even though I was brought up on the South Coast rather than the gritty north I remember my parents wearing very similar outfits to the ones here, and our flat had similar decor too (and no bathroom, the toilet was on the balcony with the coal bunker and the bath was in the kitchen - at least Sheridan had a proper bathroom to dye her hair in!).

Looking forward to tonight's prog.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 29/09/2014 18:48

Pixel we had a flat when I was a wee nipper that had a bath in the kitchen! thinking back to how weird that was!

I liked the end that was under the sink drainage board!

Pixel · 29/09/2014 19:02
Grin

Ours had a lid on it so it could double as a worktop. I used to be scared the lid would fall down on me!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/09/2014 21:04

Cilla was a right old cow.

MerrilyWatkins · 29/09/2014 21:11

Ken Dodd's Dad was my Nana's coalman in Knotty Ash. Don't know anything about his dog though.

Is if just me how has Cilla suddenly got "posher" in this episode? I suppose that deliberate as I've heard that Cilla ditched the Scouse years ago and only puts it back on when she's on the TV.

R4roger · 29/09/2014 22:04

Sheridan Smith was Soo good in this Smile

MrsDavidBowie · 30/09/2014 07:20

Loved last nights episode.
Sheridan Smith is incredibly talented. When you think she's come from playing James Corden's sister in Gavin and Stacey ...loved her in Legally Blonde...

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 30/09/2014 08:21

Sheridan was amazing in this. It isn't as if you'd think 'oh, doesn't she have a look of the young Cilla Black about her' in anything else she's done. She must have worked so hard, and I guess it is the producer too who knew what to look for and pick out the right expressions and capture those moments. The whole thing is really well done.

So sad about Brian. Flowers

AnyoneForTARDIS · 30/09/2014 08:42

just wish Brian was a bit more lookalike for me to actually SEE Brian, as Cilla and Bobby were more lookalike.

same with the Beatles, couldn't tell one from the other.

Bobbys a new hero of mine, wasn't he incredible, putting up with all the shit from her just cos he loved her so much?
although she did take him back knowing she loved him and it wasn't the same without him.

Cilla (real one) was on room 101 straight after on Dave and she said she hates people who do the 'do you know who I am' thing, yet shes accused of it?

she cam across very nice in prog.

this dramas making me think different about her, that the real Cilla would allow the 'warts and all' to be shown.

Lagoonablue · 30/09/2014 11:34

I find Brian Epstein a really interesting character and thought the programme didn't really do him justice. I saw a great documentary about him on BBC 4 last year. He was also better looking than the guy playing him in Cilla.

Vintagejazz · 30/09/2014 12:48

Quite a downbeat ending, and I can see how Cilla could have ended up as a bit of a diva. Sheridan Smith was absolutely brilliant, particularly in the scene where Bobby told her he'd got an offer of a recording contract. I hope she's nominated for a BAFTA.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 30/09/2014 18:40

I love 'step inside love'.

hate the song Alfie, she must have too, after so many takes! and the musicians!

AnyoneForTARDIS · 30/09/2014 18:40

hope they both get nommed for a bafta, he was brilliant too.

Clawdy · 30/09/2014 19:34

I thought Ed Stoppard was far more good-looking than Brian Epstein,in fact there was no resemblance whatsoever,so odd casting. And I agree with previous posts that none of the Beatles looked remotely like the real ones. Mistake, because you were constantly saying to yourself "Oh,that's John...ok...now,is that Ringo? "

diddl · 30/09/2014 20:10

I thought that the Ringo looked quite like, but maybe it was just the hair!

It was quite sad in a way.

I wonder why Bobby didn't sign with Epstein?

Wasn't he only about 21 at the time?

Find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have done it just on Cilla's say so.

Also found it hard to think that she "held her own" with Burt Bacharach.

Wouldn't he have been about twice her age & very well established at the time??

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/09/2014 20:25

Enjoyed it, but why were the hemlines so low even when it was well into the mid/late 60s? I was at school then, the teachers would measure our skirts, no more than 4" above the knee allowed - of course we turned our waistbands over to raise our hemlines a bit more once off the premises :)

Clawdy · 30/09/2014 22:48

Never heard that about Bobby being signed before - presume it's true but seems odd. And yes, minis were much shorter then!

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2014 13:56

Just watched it this morning, it really pains me as i was blubbing when she sang that song to Bobby through the TV and he came to see her. Why do i care about CB being heartbroken?? Hmm

I started despising her right from the point of her telling Bobby he couldnt get his recording contract - she was a right cow from then on Sad

I loved the exchanges between Bobby and Mr White, proper father and son in law banter - really well acted!!

The whole show made me despise Cilla and really love Bobby! Grin

Sad to see Brian Epstein's decline too Sad

It also annoyed me as i kept thinking that i loved Cilla's hair - i CANNOT aspire to be CB!! Shock Hmm Grin

MarthasHarbour · 01/10/2014 13:56

Too many smileys in my last post - apologies - i realise this is not NetHuns!

diddl · 01/10/2014 13:58

I was shocked that they lived together!
