I love Sheridan Smith but I really don't know if I can face the topic. I do like thar era though for the clothes and music.

Did anyone see Sheridan Smith on Who do you think you are, it showed her singing with her parents in a club. She was a natural, I hope she releases an album at some point.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 22/09/2014 22:18

Very good actor. She's making me like Cilla. Can see how she never really managed to become confident. That vulnerability was part of her attraction, but it's blighted her.

Picturesinthefirelight · 22/09/2014 22:19

Listen to this about 45 secs in

Southeastdweller · 22/09/2014 22:20

I had goosebumps at the end when she was singing 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' and we saw the reactions of everyone when they were listening to it and then when she hugged Bobby by the telephone box.

Davros · 22/09/2014 23:38

Dione Warwick has never forgiven her for re recording all her hits. SS still didn't get quite a harsh enough tone in the high bits, she's obviously too good a singer! Cilla did say in last weeks interview in the RT that she was very ambitious, determined, selfish and even rude

diddl · 23/09/2014 12:21

I always thought that Cilla's voice was OK, & when I saw it last week & she was having the banter with Ted "Kingsize" Taylor, I thought that I could see how she got a programme as an entertainer.

Then when SS launched into "Somebody's always trying", I thought "bet Cilla wishes she could sing like that!"

Still, hats off to her, she made the most of her chances!

Cherrypie32 · 23/09/2014 14:15

SS has far too pretty a face and voice to completely take off Cilla. I've just checked out Cilla singing 'Anyone who had a heart' on YouTube and there is certainly a harsh tone to her voice that is unappealing. I'm watching and enjoying the show purely as a drama rather than a Cilla biog.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 23/09/2014 17:08

I was actually a bit emotional last night.

Cilla needing Bobby to go on stage with her to give her confidence. thought that was so sweet.

and she didn't dump him when Brian signed her up, she wanted Bobby with her.

and the end when she jumped into his arms at the phone box.

shows I guess they had a loving relationship.

like that about her, that she was vulnerable and insecure.

SS does a sterling attempt at the singing voice doesn't she?

although didn't see what Epstein at the gay club had to do with her story. that's another series itself, his life.

the guy who played George Martin- took me a while till I realised he was Mr Darcy in Lost in Austen!

diddl · 23/09/2014 17:20

"Dione Warwick has never forgiven her for re recording all her hits."

I've heard that as well.

Surely she was just recording what she was told to though?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/09/2014 17:22

Yes, the Epstein bit was a bit weird. I didn't think people knew he was gay really until after he died (well, not the public, I know it was an open secret in his circle). I didn't really see how it was relevant to the plot. I wanted more singing!

AnyoneForTARDIS · 23/09/2014 17:23

it was Brian who bought the song over, it wasn't a hit for Dione in Uk was it then? as Diddl says, Cilla was persuaded to record it.

it didn't have to be a hit song for her but it was.

loads of British artists covered American songs then and had hits in Britain.

Saw a documentary about DW once and she came across as an arrogant diva and every song in the world was hers.

Onedropoflove · 23/09/2014 17:44

It's not as if Dionne wrote it is it?

OP posts:
Southeastdweller · 23/09/2014 18:04

I think they added the Epstein and Bobby stories in to pad the three part series out. Cilla's life story just isn't interesting to warrant three hours, at least not the official story.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 23/09/2014 18:56

LOL.

wonder if in the programme itll fast forward to now and she'll name drop being bezzies with paul O Grady and Cliff!

and the supposed airline staff fiascos being a diva?

The song has climbed the current charts to number 46.
Pleased for Sheridan Smith that the show has been a success but cannot abide Cilla.

alemci · 25/09/2014 15:45

I wasn't going to bother with this but it is quite good.

I think Aneuard Barnard is good as Bobby, didn't recognise him and his back story is interesting. like SS as Cilla much prettier.

Doh from Brookside looks old, like Melanie Hill

AnyoneForTARDIS · 25/09/2014 16:56

Three what, Cilla or SS's version?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 26/09/2014 19:56

I bought Cillas version but it had too much Cilla in it.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 26/09/2014 19:59

They should hve called the programme Cilla and Bobby though IMO. its as much his story as hers.

what do you think?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 26/09/2014 21:21

Yes, he didn't get a look in did he ?

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 27/09/2014 22:36

auntpetunia My nan was from Scottie Road and knew the White family too... and she used to say pretty much everything you said in your post.

The fact that my nan's family and your family most likely knew each other is weird!

auntpetunia · 28/09/2014 19:17

It's very strange pourquoi but I've grown up with both my parents seeming to know everyone or be related to them via some circuitous route. Only the other day one of my work colleagues was talking about cilla and said exactly what I said in my post, it turns out her relatives lived in the same street as my mum!

MarthasHarbour · 28/09/2014 21:16

Reluctantly watching this for the same reason as everyone else! Cant abide Cilla but love Sheridan Smith; love a bit of 60's drama; loving the music and the hair etc etc

But most of all i am loving this thread! Wink I too read kleptronics post in a scouse accent and am totes giving sympathy to poor nan of auntpetunia these care homes have a lot to answer for Grin

auntpetunia · 29/09/2014 07:13

martha that would be my mum not my nan! She actually asked to watch last Mondays an still moaned about it.... Though all the ladies complained about the scene with Brian Epstein so it wasn't just mum having a moan.
