And another thing! Maybe it was the editing but the "disciplne" in the programme all seemed to be reactive rather than pro-active - as in reacting to behaviour rather than pre-empting it and taking steps to avoid it in the first place...to me that's basic kidology!

MamaMaiasaura · 21/09/2006 22:29

Was anyone here asked if they agreed with smacking in the pole? Was it open pole? tbh most statistics are a load of crap anyway and not representative of the view of gen populus.. else we are taken over by chavtastic bullying bastards xx

rushour · 21/09/2006 22:30

and texas rose..love your parenting mantra..totally adopted!

donnie · 21/09/2006 22:33

what a bizarre programme. It was off its bloody head IMO.

That vile woman with the eyebrows - did you see the way she shouted at and stonewalled the psychologist who was trying to reason with her ? a total child herself - and a badly behaved one at that. Not surprised her older son smacked her back. One day he will flatten her, perhaps even kill her, if she carries on like that.

Then the Welsh woman who announced , of her parents' strict regime " It never done me no harm" then promptly went to prison for assault, fraud and theft. DUH!!! one of her under 10 yr old daughters was wearing at shirt which said ' if you think I'm a bitch you can f**k off'. Nice.

bunch of freaks IMO. Sad freaks with even sadder children.

MamaMaiasaura · 21/09/2006 22:34

personality disrodered breeding personality disorder...

texasrose · 21/09/2006 22:36

Sorry to be thick but what do you mean by SN (as in a SN child)?

sorrell · 21/09/2006 22:38

I choose not to watch programmes like this as they make me want to cry. But I bet they are not that unusual. I think some scum have children. As for asbos, do you think that children of parents who choose not to hit their children are more likely to get Asbos? I would suggest it is quite the other way around. And actually, yes, my children are too good to hit. Just like I am.

texasrose · 21/09/2006 22:44

Hmmm...I've just found another thread on the Parenting message board with lots of MNers saying that they agree with smacking, or do smack their children. I don't think it is just ignorant people who lose it and lash out - although that describes the parents in the programme. Some people genuinely seem to think it's the most effective way of discipline. Which I find totally bizarre and don't understand at all.

Blu · 21/09/2006 22:44

texasrose - SN = special needs.

davina99 · 21/09/2006 22:45

feeling in desperate need to give something back to society after watching this have found a couple of things, the first and easiest for all of us with lots of kids, not much time is its childlines birthday in October and there suggesting that schools/nurserys etc join in with CAKES FOR CHILDLINE it is what it says, get loads of people at your school to bake cakes, have a day or two or more where you sell them then donate all the money to Childline, a good time for school to incorporate informing kids of childline during assemblies etc maybe some in school advertising. Obviously not all kids smacked need to contact childline but some kids might think there being smacked when its in fact a lot more, its the common thing I'm not beating you just smacking. I'm certainly going to raise it as an idea in school tomorrow and hopefully raise some cash, the website says 2000 children don't get through to Childline each day. Also parentline are always looking for volunteers but you need to live in a town where there is a Parentline office so not so easy to volunteer. Maybe in our little way we can help to make some children have a happier life!

Calista · 21/09/2006 22:48

Another one here who had to turn this shocking programme off.. when Mitchell's dad squeezed his little hand that was holding the straw really tight and then sent him away from the table just for turning round and yanked his chair out from the table so the poor little lad jumped in fright and nearly fell off his chair...

Absolutely shocking.

texasrose · 21/09/2006 22:49

thanks Blu!

MamaMaiasaura · 21/09/2006 22:51

Davina - what a fantastic idea, will raise it with the school tomorrow

davina99 · 21/09/2006 22:57

hurray awen we can go to bed feeling a bit more positive! we are strong people and we can help the kids of this country!! still feel sad but theres nothing like having something positive to focus on

Quadrophenia · 21/09/2006 22:58

does anyone know if its repeated at all?

davina99 · 21/09/2006 23:03

I am sure it will be repeated on itv2 at somepoint but no plans to repeat right now according to their website

Quadrophenia · 21/09/2006 23:05

cheers davina

Sparkler1 · 21/09/2006 23:34

I've recorded this on SkyPlanner tonight. Not sure I want to watch it now.

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:44

Another totally doolally programme! Thought that the biggest point the programme makers were missing was that it was not really an issue of whether these parents smacked or not but more that for the main parent their parenting skills and techniques were clearly deficient. The only people that seemed to have it right (as in right for a family who have chosen to smack) were the Christian family but they obviously didn't make good enough telly so only got three minutes.

I posted this on the other thread, thought I would post here too as it looks like this is where the actual discussion of the programme is taking place.

hunkermunker · 21/09/2006 23:46

I chose not to watch this.

Reading this thread, I'm glad I didn't see it.

I don't get the point of a light tap. Sooner or later, the child will say "Didn't hurt!" and laugh at you. What do you do then, if it's your ultimate parenting tool?

lanismum · 21/09/2006 23:47

as horrible as this was, especially little mitchell, iv seen parents do worse to their kids in public, god knows what happens at home?
my aunt lives next door to a family that hit their dd, shes about 7 id say at a guess, one day the dad dragged her in off the balconey by her braids so hard that a few were ripped out, he then started laying into her in the hallyway, and i dont mean slaps, my uncle went in and dragged him off her and my aunt called social services, but the girl still lives there, the dads response to my uncle was, in my country this is how we teach our children

lanismum · 21/09/2006 23:49

that was for squirting water on the floor by the way.

hunkermunker · 21/09/2006 23:52

Oh, and to the dad I saw shouting "do you want a smack?" over and over to his toddler a few months ago - did you think she'd say "ooh, yes, please, Daddy!"?

MrsSpoon · 21/09/2006 23:56

Did anyone think the woman who was the mother of the little boy that was doing all the swearing looked and sounded like Waynetta Slob?

MamaMaiasaura · 22/09/2006 01:01

just thought if that is the behaviour those parents on their allowed to be filmed.. what goes on behind closed doors there?
