I loved the cake guillotine (sp?!) but did think the swiss roll cake plate was a bit naff Grin

Roussette · 09/08/2014 18:25

skate board I meant... can't type

GalaxyInMyPants · 09/08/2014 18:34

That's true. They wouldn't have had that stuff if they hadn't known.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 19:03

Roussette the Wimpy Brown DerbyGrin. Did you ever have one, I didn't so have no idea what they tasted like. They did do Rum Babas on a previous season, I think they are rather ugh myself.

They criticised Brendan for his 70's looking cake a couple of seasons ago.

Mmm I thought Mary Berry's cherry cake looked a bit dry, I don't ice mine either, maybe my cherries sink because my cake is not dry, sorry I can't use the 'm' wordSmile.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 19:05

So as not to let the side down, I promise sprinkles, hundreds and thousands and all cake decorating products of that ilk will neve drken my door again.Smile

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 19:07

Do the contestants supply all the cake stands themselves as well?

Roussette · 09/08/2014 19:10

Oh yes I have had a brown derby 'cos I is old
'having a brown derby' sounds faintly rude actually. If I remember rightly they were sweet wet and sickly... more of a play on words there too!

Haha emotions you have to use the M word, this is GBBO thread after all - look at all my innuendoes above Grin

Galaxy - they have to plan the entire series before they start IIRC. The one who was a dr on the last series did a great blog that I found quite an eye opener. They get minimal money for ingredients to practice with so it ends up costing a fortune.

JenniMoo · 09/08/2014 19:44

Ok, it was 2y ago and Danny:

TSSDNCOP · 09/08/2014 19:54

Didn't Francis have all kinds of gadgetry last series, oft criticised by PH of style over substance?

I don't think the Swiss roll stand was supposed to look like a skateboard the "wheels" were supposed to be Swiss rolls.

I've just watched it again on player, had missed "zany" Jordan's fucking stupid bike first time round. What grown man does that and wear coloured hair slides.

Uber knobber.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 20:10

Sounds like it can be quite an expensive enterprise. Thanks for the link Jenni, I'll have a read of it later.

Just for you, you Brown Derby eating Roussette - MOIST AAAAGGGH

Roussette · 09/08/2014 20:33

I can sleep happy tonight Emotions Grin

IScreamForIceCream · 09/08/2014 20:36

Jenni - that's an excellent link -such a good read. I always liked Danni, and reading her blog just reminds me of that. Her precis of the GBBO process was really interesting.

GalaxyInMyPants · 09/08/2014 20:44

Well that's blog made up my mind for me. I'm never going to apply.

I reckon I'm goingto set myself a challenge though and do one recipe a week from GBBO. So a recipe from week 1 the first week, a recipe from week 2 the next, etc.

I need the book to come out next week first.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 21:26

Glad to be of help RoussetteGrin

Galaxy do any of the recipes go on-line immediately after the episode?

GalaxyInMyPants · 09/08/2014 23:10

Some of them do but only a limited number.

Like one Swiss roll and one mini cake recipe. And typically they're never the ones I liked the look of!

ppeatfruit · 10/08/2014 09:48

Oh ok you lot I DO like Jo Brand but perleese don't tell me she looks 'normal' I just lost 3 stone (and am now a size 10) to look abnormal then did i??? Grin

ref. sprinkles, smarties, hundreds andd thousands etc. I make cakes for Dcs birthdays rather than other occasions because like me everyone's watching their weight nowadays Grin Though I DO make a mean gluten free brownie Grin for us.

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 10/08/2014 10:19

ooh brown derby was fab! It was a warm donut, with Mr Whippy ice cream in the hole and then chocolate sauce and nuts sprinkled on top, what's not to like?!

These days the closest I get to approximating it is to buy a McFlurry and a Mc-apple pie and eat them together.

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 10/08/2014 10:25

ppeat, the comment about Jo Brand was that she isn't some smiley fake flirty presenter, that she looks 'normal' in that context..."It's also nice to have a presenter who actually looks like a normal woman, isn't a size 0 and may have actually eaten a cake or two in her life."

You admit that as a size 10 you don't eat 3 different kinds of cake every week, that they are just for birthdays etc ("as everyone is watching their weight"), so in this context, as a regular cake eater, Roisin and Jo Brand look normal (although obviously Roisin is more of a shapely, curvaceous cake-eater than Jo!)

If they had chosen some skinny minnie who only took a tiny mouthful of each cake and then refused to try the next one in case it took her over her daily points or something, then it wouldn't really be the same show.

ppeatfruit · 10/08/2014 10:35

IKWYM Penelope I Do eat cake but I make gluten free or no wheat cakes they can be just as luscious as any 'normal' cake (I have never counted a calorie or weighed food in my life btw).

emotionsecho · 10/08/2014 14:05

Galaxy that's typical that the recipe you really want is never the one put on-line isn't it?

A couple of seasons ago one of the contestants (male) made some ginger biscuits using three forms of ginger and I searched high and low for that recipe because I like my ginger biscuits to be very gingery. Paul Hollywood complained they were too gingery, I made PH's version of ginger biscuits and they tasted of nothing, I was very disappointed.

I just like Jo Brand's style, much as I like Dara O'Brien's style on the Apprentice after show, which is why I think she is perfect for Extra Slice.
