Oh no, a discussion show? I think GBBO has jumped the shark. I knew the move to BBC One would be a bad thing.

I LOVE the show, so hope I'm proved wrong.

But I still can't wait for it to start!

I love GBBO! Can't wait for it to start again. Not long now ...

On another note, I only caught on to it by season 3, thought I would be able to get seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, but no! Anyone got this still and happy to burn a copy for me? I'll obviously cover expenses etc.

The spinoff will either be really good - or utter shite. It's hosted by Jo Brand, and is more like the Apprentice spin off (ie BBC 2, on straight after main show) than the dancing one.

Please be good!

When's the spin off?

Series one and two might still be on Youtube.

They often repeat the old ones, don't they?
A quick search shows the only upcoming episode is the new one. It's probably worth looking for repeats after this series finishes.

Thanks for the prompt this is coming back, I love this show and so hope the transfer to BBC1 doesn't spoil it, make it too try hard and false ifyswim. I hope they do keep it as a programme of 'home' bakers and don't try to make it too professional/mastercheffy.

I love looking at the equipment they all use, and thinking "ooh must get one of them" though why as I will never use said item I don't knowGrin.

It's kitchen porn, isn't it?

  • Kilner jars - check
  • Kitchen Aid - check
  • Mason Cash bowls - check
  • Le Creuset in the background - check
  • Magimix - check...

Will the bunting still be there, or is bunting over now, do you think?

I fear they may force the comedy moments and hire squirrels with massive nuts for example

From the BBC website:

"Cake

Not currently available on BBC iPlayer
Series 5
DURATION: 1 HOUR
The Bake Off is back for another year, welcoming the tent's youngest-ever baker and the oldest. All 12 bakers will be challenged on their baking skills from every angle by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, all the while helped - or hindered - by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. But their first hurdle is cake.

As they enter the tent for the very first time, their first Signature Challenge is to make a swiss roll. But with such a seemingly-simple challenge comes a risk - who will have the tightest roll? Whose roll will split? Should the bakers go for the classic or push the boat out to impress?

Recovering from their first challenge, they face their first ever Technical Challenge. It's cake week... it's a Mary recipe... it's a classic cherry cake. But will the bakers be able to suspend the cherries and ice their cakes to the exacting standard of Ms Berry?

As the next day dawns so does the Showstopper. The bakers must make classic British cakes... in perfect miniature... all 36 of them...

30 challenges, 12 brand-new bakers, two judges and two presenters, but there can only be one winner.

On your marks, get set... bake!"

So, Swiss rolls, classic cherry cake then miniature Classic British cakes... Not a particularly exciting start Hmm

Oh, there will also be the oldest ever and youngest ever contestants.

Yes, I suppose you're right! I can't find an online recipe for a Mary Berry cherry cake, obviously not that classic!

Hmm! maybe this is it.

Anyone fancy indulging in Swiss roll fantasy? What would you do if you were a contestant?

No matter what I do my cherries never stay nicely suspended in my cherry cakes, I blame my oven (I know, I know, bad workman and all that!). I was seriously peeved when a lovely friend came to stay and as she loves baking and needed time to relax and not think about things and chat nonsenically we made a cherry cake together and the damn things suspended beautifully for her.....so maybe not the oven thenGrin.

Swiss Roll, probably stay fairly classic but maybe lemon to add a bit of sharpness.

What I want to know is what happens to the stuff they bake, do they take it home with them (I understood the bakers come to the tent every weekend for however long they are in the competition) or do they share it out, or do the production crew scoff the lot?

I'd probably do a chocolate sponge roll with a spiced apricot filling.

I think the extra cake gets eaten by the prod team there.

Ooh that sounds nice, unfortunately I can't eat anything chocolate as it gives me migraineSad

I am thinking about the miniature classic British cakes bit and can't think of many, I guess it's three miniature cakes that each person has to make - Victoria Sandwich, Chocolate Cake and....the only other one I can think of is Fruit Cake, but surely that wouldn't be one of the three?

I am pathetically over excited but agree it should really start in September, but maybe it would make the final too close to Christmas.

LaChatte · 29/07/2014 17:15

I'd do mini coffee cakes, lemon drizzles and brownies.

Ah yes, I forgot lemon drizzle, and coffee and walnut - does carrot cake count as a British classic, although that could be quite difficult to make in miniature.
