That surely was one of the great Men's Doubles Finals? Annoyed the beeb didn't show them getting their trophy

LaVolcan · 05/07/2014 21:39

Glad it's finishing tomorrow: I have been neglecting my work, just trying to stick with a sneaky peak at the results and then deciding that I have to watch the match afterall.

Raahh · 05/07/2014 21:42

I'm gutted I missed the doubles. I've recorded for the wee small hours when I cannot sleep.

anyway

I wish I'd seen more of the Men's Doubles Final. I was following the scores online & made DH hand over the remote when it got halfway through the final set.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Hope Fed wins. I've never actually said that before - at least not since his first Wimbledon final in 2003.

I wish the slams would reconsider not letting the women play five sets. I think it's possible Bouchard could have got her shit together put up more of a fight with another set "cushion"

OneInAMillionYou · 05/07/2014 23:19

It isn't "the slams" which refuse women the chance to play 5 sets. The women's game is never 5 sets, anywhere on the tour, so it would require a fundamental shift in the whole sport, including training and preparation.

I am another of the opinion that Bouchard is the wrong side of the arrogance/confidence line. She was extremely ungracious during the tour of the court with her trophy, virtually sulky teenager mode.
Kvitova played the most astonishing, perfect match and it was great to see, and I am not a fan of the women's game generally.

OneInAMillionYou · 05/07/2014 23:21

Also, there are commercial reasons. The WTA relies heavily on joint weeks with the ATP tour to give the women's game some profile. It could not survive commercially on its own as most fans would rather poke out their eyes than sit through a day of women's tennis.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 05/07/2014 23:38

Thanks, One. I thought that it was only in the slams that the men played 5 sets and elsewhere it was 3?

OneInAMillionYou · 05/07/2014 23:52

Ah yes, the men's tour is three sets for everything other than the slams, but the women have never played five.
I do prefer 5 sets, to me it is the purest form of the battle. Three sets always seems so short, but as most tour tournaments are only one week, it wouldn't be practical to make them 5.
I was disappointed when they reduced the year end World Tour Finals from five to three, I think about 6 or so years ago?
I have clearly given this far too much thought! :-)

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 06/07/2014 09:35

Yeah, I'd only want the slams changed so that the two were equal length throughout.

As serve is typically more dominant in the men's game, it's rare to get bagels - however, the Federer Robredo match was a fair bit shorter than the Sharapova-Kerber match although it was 6-4 6-4 6-4 (both were 3 setters)

Mixed doubles!
