Book and tv series spoilers allowed.

OP posts:
FolknNorah · 10/06/2014 11:01

I was surprised and sad that Pip and Grenn died too. I thought I must have forgotten something up if you're saying it too....

BelleOfTheBorstal · 10/06/2014 11:22

I suspect Shireen is going to be the kings blood needed for the fire element. The bathtub conversation between Selyse and Melisandre was setting that up.
I don't know how Jon Snow will have the authority to send her away though.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 10/06/2014 18:47

I'm not sure, we might still have Mance's baby as Jon is there when it is delivered and Dalla dies in childbirth, so Jon could bring her over and give the baby straight to Gilly. Also, we don't meet Val until after the battle so more likely to be introduced in the next series.

Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 18:53

Time yet for val yet I think.
I was so sad that pyp and grenn died, even high I knew it was coming :(
Can't remember what happens to Janos slynt?....
Not sure what maestro aemon being a targaryan means....anything?

BelleOfTheBorstal · 10/06/2014 18:56

It means that he is another candidate for sacrificing to R'hallor, is what it means!

AryaOfHouseSnark · 10/06/2014 19:10

Dornish Jon executed him for being naughty. Remember "Ed, fetch me the block" ?
I wonder if they will just cut out Val and Dalas baby. Maybe it's not all that important in the long run

Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 19:22

Oooooh you are all v clever :)
I forgot about the block!!
I find the trouble with the books is that they are sooo long and detailed I do forget quite a bit - that's my excuse anyway! :)

Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 19:23

I am this close to ordering a poster of the nights watch oath :)

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 10/06/2014 19:59

Dornish - do it.
I don't think I could put up with the rolling of the eyes from my DH if I brought one (he'd never dare say anything but the eyes give it away!).

Yes, I'm looking forward to Jon dealing with Janos Slynt. They made his personality even worse in the TV series as I don't remember him being cowardly in the book. I suppose it helps to justify Jon's actions.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 10/06/2014 20:06

There is so much to remember, I picked up more the second time round and use the wiki page to refresh my mind if I forget something.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 10/06/2014 20:08

dornish, how about a t-shirt?

I end up re-reading them every time there is new series. I must get reading other books as I think I've read little else for last few years. Currently reading book 4 again.

Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 20:16

Argh....now I want a poster and t shirt!! Grin

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 10/06/2014 20:28
Grin
Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 20:32

I must stop looking at GofT merchandise!!
I want it ALL....

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 10/06/2014 21:35

I can't wait for the fetch me the block scene. I especially loved Stannis' little nod of approval.

In case you haven't noticed, I am a staunch Stannis supporter, I don't always like everything he does, but I really like the character's personality. Although I am a little bit a lot in love with Tormund too.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 10/06/2014 21:37

Has anyone read the Dunk and Egg books? The Brienne and Pod scenes are reminding me a lot of the Dunk and Egg adventures. It would be good if they could tie that in somehow as it is strongly suggested that Brienne is related to Ser Dunk.

Dornishwine · 10/06/2014 21:41

Yeah. Love stannis :)
Liked renly too tbh. (What did cersei call him? A renowned pillow biter?:))
Margery is an interesting character, although not as interesting as her grandmother.

MrsBeeee · 10/06/2014 22:12

Just finished watching it earlier. Ooooh it was good. But then am an unashamed Jon Snow fan. Also cheered when Sam snogged Gilly, much to DH's amusement.

Really looking forward to next week. I predict dead Tywin, dead Shae and Tyrion off on a boat. Stannis turning up at the wall. Hound keeling over and Arya getting on the boat and all the weird stuff with Bran and the treeman/ seer. With possibly UnCat at the end though I still think they may leave that out.

polyhymnia · 10/06/2014 22:32

pourquoi, yes really like that song . Also sometimes say that phrase to myself when I've been spending ages on the net instead of getting on with work!

Thought I might find the all - Wall episode boring but was really drawn in. Visually it's incredibly rich and allusive.

anonacfr · 10/06/2014 23:47

See I don't get Stannis at all. He is so stern and self righteous that he's happy to burn people alive because technically he has the strongest claim to the throne.

He has no compassion whatsoever and you get the sense that he would execute his own child if Melissandre asked him too. That form of fanaticism in (effectively) his own name is veeeery scary to me.

He's just like entitled Daenerys. He basically expects everyone to sacrifice themselves for him without giving anything in return. People who like his character rave about the fact that he 'saved the Night's Watch'. The only reason he did was for power. He wants to kill White Walkers not to help people but to save his kingdom. I hated the way he took over the Wall in the books. For centuries the Wall has been independent and in the service of the Realm and there he was expecting Jon Snow to be his lackey.

BelleOfTheBorstal · 11/06/2014 00:09

pourquoifancy co-founding the Tormund fan club with me?

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 11/06/2014 07:14

Grin Great idea Belle.

book!Stannis and book!Selyse would NEVER burn Shireen because Mel said so. I don't like how they have portrayed them like that in the show. In fact the show has left out a lot of background which goes someway towards explaining Stannis' motives, for example he burned his brother in law/wife's uncle (whichever it was) because he was plotting to marry Shireen off to Tommen. Until then, Stannis hadn't been too fond of the burnings.

In the show they also made him out to be a complete hypocrite when he slept with Mel. It goes against everything Stannis believes.

anonacfr · 11/06/2014 07:50

I agree with the sleeping with Mel but I still think he's a dangerous prospect for a king.
All his actions in the book are ultimately defined by his need to become King.

And book!Selyse is nearly as scary as in the series. I still think she would Iphigenia her own daughter.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 12/06/2014 19:53

I love Stan the man too, although I can't figure out if he has got a really dry sense of humour or if he is just blunt or what. Either way, he is one of my favourite characters.

I've read the hedge night, it was brilliant, so much history and back stories. I will have to get the rest of them.
Not long now till the finale.
