annalegovah my description of Ned as a bit of a git was far too flippant. I agree with you that he was probably too good for this world. However, he did trade his wife and daughters to some extent.

Being adaptable would probably have ensured his survival and made things better for his children. AFAIK Catelyn, though intractable about certain things, was open to negotiation. Robb wasn't, like his dad. Didn't he kill someone for noble reasons against Catelyn's advice which led to the Red Wedding massacre?

My memory is appalling.

Why did Arya leave The Hound to die in misery? Was she weighing it up and then came down on a decision? I've explained why I think so but I frequently get it wrong.

Apparently winter is coming but currently my room is very sunny and there is annoying bluebottle in it.

AnnaLegovah · 18/06/2014 15:45

Yep Robb beheaded Lord Karstark who murdered the two young Lannister prisoners because Jaime murdered his son. Which meant the Karstark army (about half the Stark army I think) marched home. Massive mistake in the form of 'honour'.

Like Cersei said to Ned 'in the game of thrones you win or you die'. How right she is.

If winter is coming I'm terribly underdressed... Wink

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2014 16:07

Thanks for the explanation anna.

I have some really nice furs so I'm sorted for the winter that's coming. I'm not even going to pretend they're vintage. I like fur.

If I was a GoT character my name would be WeaselSlayer or AnySmallToMediumSizedAnimalUpToTheSizeOfAWolfSlayer.

My Direcat would be BluebottleSlayer, if only he wasn't curled up asleep right now while the flies are buzzing merrily round the room.

He's very remiss but his coat is lovely and soft. Might make a scarf. When he wakes up I might discuss it with him in order to motivate him...

AnnaLegovah · 18/06/2014 16:40

Hah my direcat would be 4amwaker (the little devil). For your GOT name you need this!

Would love to see more of shadowcats in the series, frequently referenced but don't think we've actually seen any yet.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2014 17:01

According to your link I am the Unsullied Furslayer, Avenger of Dragons and Rider for the House of Targaryan.

My weapon of choice is poison because I'm a bit of a weakling.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2014 17:11

My Direcat is The Secret Keeper, he is the Creator of Virtue and rides for House Tyrell, which might be a bit of a conflict, because I buy the food round here.

His weapon of choice is also poison. Knowing what I do of the sneaky little bastard, I'd have to agree.

MikeLitoris · 18/06/2014 17:18

That was the link I meant to post up thread Blush

ICanHearYou · 18/06/2014 17:55

Surely Ned Stark is Jon Snows father? I thought that is what a barstard is?

QueenOfThorns · 18/06/2014 18:46

We have been told that Ned was Jon Snurr's father, but how is that in keeping with his nauseating sense of honour?

TulipOHare · 18/06/2014 18:47

ICan yes, that is what the characters believe, including Jon. But there is reason to think it may not be true. Can't really say more because of the thread rule about

GAME OF THRONES Season 4
OP posts:
MikeLitoris · 18/06/2014 19:18

I stopped believing he was Ned Stark son half way through season 1. There are a few scenes that made me think it but nothing that was actually said. Imo it's very heavily hinted at in the books but not as much on the show.

ICanHearYou · 18/06/2014 19:40

Surely though, he would have told Cat the truth? There is that whole bit where she tells him that the last time he went away he came back with another womans child. I think he would have told her the truth even if the pair of them kept it secret from everyone else. She hated Jon and believed him to be Neds son, I don't think Ned would have told her that had it not been the truth.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 18/06/2014 19:44

It depends who his parents were and the risk to his and their lives if it were known. I think the story had to be entirely plausible which meant telling Cat he was his. Also, Ned and Cat barely knew each other when he turned up with baby Jon, he wouldn't have had faith or trust in her at that point. Maybe years later but by that point she would have been likely to hate him for lying and there's really never a good time for that conversation.

ICanHearYou · 18/06/2014 19:46

I've just realised there is the potential for a million off-shoots from GoT that cover the lives of everyone before the first season.

QueenOfThorns · 18/06/2014 19:46

If the speculation is true, that's the saddest part. It would mean that Catelyn died believing that her husband betrayed her when he didn't. Sad

It's only speculation, not really a spoiler, but I'm not saying anything else on this thread!

AnnaLegovah · 18/06/2014 19:59

Knowing Ned, he would consider it a failing of his 'honour' if he gave away the secret, even to his wife? presuming Jon is not his son of course. I have no idea.

MikeLitoris · 18/06/2014 20:23

I'm not saying much more on the subject but Ned was very honorable. If he promised to never tell the secret of Jons parentage then he would have done just that. Even to Cat.

hildasmuriel · 18/06/2014 20:30

Maybe telling Cat might have put her in danger.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 18/06/2014 20:45

I'm not a book reader, but I questioned his parentage long ago. It just doesn't fit in with Ned's character, although I accept that they all have flaws. But I also think that if he promised someone he would keep the secret, then he would. Even from Cat.

Who is Jon Snurr then? It would have to be someone Ned was loyal to. I was wondering if he was another bastard of Robert's, but maybe the mother is someone really important? Are we allowed to speculate here?

TulipOHare · 18/06/2014 20:52

I think if you haven't read the books, speculate away. If you have read them, exercise caution as it is hard to remember exactly what show watchers know and what they don't.

I'm saying nowt Smile

ICanHearYou · 18/06/2014 20:54

Oh okay... That makes sense

ZebraZeebra · 18/06/2014 21:34

I've not read the books but I just read a really compelling case for characters from where Season one immediately picks up. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but I don't think it is anyway because no one knows?

AnnaLegovah · 18/06/2014 21:38

Tulip maybe when season 5 is about to start we could put that pic in the opening post? Grin

I havnt read ahead in the books but I wonder if Jon's mother is Ned's sister Lyanna. Or somehow connected to the wildings, they all seemed very interested in him when thty found out he was Ned's bastard (but that might just be the Northern connection).

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 18/06/2014 21:45

I've just read back on some episode guides to try and remember what conversation in the show triggered me thinking that Ned wasn't really his dad. It's Series 1, Episode 2...he talks to Jon and says something like "You're my blood" but he never says SON I think? That and just the overwhelming feeling that it goes completely against Ned's character.

Which makes me think he is related to Ned but not his son. So...whose?

I get wacky theories about everything, though, and I'm nearly always wrong.

Last episode when she said Bran would fly, I thought immediately that he eventually will be a wark (sp?) to one of Dany's dragons. Blush

ZebraZeebra · 18/06/2014 21:45

That's similar to what I was thinking Anna

Someone throwing around some ideas: whatculture.com/tv/game-of-thrones-7-clues-to-the-true-parentage-of-jon-snow.php

Obviously, don't click if you don't want to wildly speculate Grin
