Ok, no idea whether this will take off, but it seemed like it was worth a try!

There's so much choice on Netflix I thought it would be good to start a recommendations thread.

I suggest putting the film title in BOLD, then an emoticon or a few words to help others scan the thread to find something to suit their mood. Hope others will join me on this thread as I'm always looking for something new to try!

Working Girl
Wine Empowering drama
Flowers Heartwarming & romantic

Watched this 80s classic in the middle of last week. A drama centring on the tribulations of a young working-class secretary trying to get ahead despite the machinations of her scheming, two-faced boss. Also features the lovely Harrison Ford as a man who likes and respects the main character for who she is, and supports her in her career. I'd give it an 8/10.

hoping other people join me on this thread so that I don't just look like a lone netflix weirdo

I know this is TV but I love Sons of Anarchy. DP and I are on the last episodes! It's about a motorcycle club and centres around Jax, a very sexy troubled Vice President of the club who receives letters from his dead father about trying to steer the club away from too much killing and gun running. Two very strong female characters in his love interest and mother. Funny at times, lots of plot twists and brilliant characters!

Everton yes they do take films down from time to time.

I see 50/50 is getting quite a bit of love on this thread too - great film.

Exactly Twinklymumma.

It does make you just recoil though. He must have wanted to generate rel revulsion. It's the guys watching that make it more uncomfortable.
Bloody great cast.

Memoirs of a geisha

Had me in tears

BOFtastic · 26/02/2014 01:03

"Moon", with Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey is excellent. It's sci-fi, which I instinctively rail against, but I found this to be a really warm human drama.

tonyblairsreallygoodlegsnbutt · 26/02/2014 02:58

Ooh have they got Moon now? I love that film! Can recommend The Killing Room as a thriller/conspiracy movie.

kissmelittleass · 05/03/2015 07:47

Anymore to add always struggling to find a good film!

ScienceRocks · 06/03/2015 19:50

Nick and norah's infinite playlist, The silver linings playbook and safety not guaranteed are all good films I've seen on Netflix.

aoife24 · 07/03/2015 20:52

The American version of the Office is hilarious, and I'm thoroughly enjoying Pretty Little Liars at the moment. Damages with Glenn Close as a terrifyingly machiavellian lawyer is brilliant too.

Ubik1 · 07/03/2015 21:00

Betty Blue but you have to see the three hour version.

I saw it first as a student and watched it again a few weeks ago.

It haunts you. It is passionate, funny, heart breaking. Beatrice Dalle is gorgeous.

Oh and there's loads of drinking and shagging in it.

HungryDam · 07/03/2015 21:10

Great thread! I always struggle to find good films

I second Damages. Not a film but a great murder mystery series with strong female characters.

primarynoodle · 09/03/2015 19:06

warrior - not into fighting films really but tom hardy is amazing and film is heartbreaking!

cherrytree63 · 10/03/2015 19:49

Death at a Funeral.

Brilliant comedy involving a wrong body, a blackmailing dwarf, and several people accidentally taking a hallucinogenic .... Grin

wigglesrock · 10/03/2015 20:44

I've just had a quick flick and seen that Calvary has just been added - I saw it last year and really enjoyed it. That and the Raid 2 Smile

HoraceCope · 10/03/2015 22:11

enjoyed Dallas Buyers Club
and Capote

irishe · 13/03/2015 21:42

I would recommend frozen ground starring Nicholas cage and john cussack. About a serial killer in Alaska. Dark gripping drama with gorgeous scenery.

Bexicles · 13/03/2015 21:53

Have recently enjoyed "The Railway Man", "Winters bone" and "Seven Pounds".

Bexicles · 13/03/2015 21:55

Almost forgot there is a fascinating documentary about Betty Page, can't remember the title.

irishe · 13/03/2015 22:59

Just finished watching welcome to the punch starring James mcevoy, mark strong and David morrissey. Not bad brit crime thriller, with 3 attractive leads!

winterland · 13/03/2015 23:06

how do you unblock the American site? I've exhausted UK one!
recommend The Good Wife

Minus2seventy3 · 14/03/2015 07:19

For anyone whose daughter was hooked like mine on Once Upon A Time, it's found its way to UK Netflix now.
Silly, nonsensical, fantasy hokum, but quite watchable. C5 showed seasons one and two, but then dropped it. 4 seasons on Netflix, with new episodes Wednesdays.
