Ok, no idea whether this will take off, but it seemed like it was worth a try!

There's so much choice on Netflix I thought it would be good to start a recommendations thread.

I suggest putting the film title in BOLD, then an emoticon or a few words to help others scan the thread to find something to suit their mood. Hope others will join me on this thread as I'm always looking for something new to try!

Working Girl
Wine Empowering drama
Flowers Heartwarming & romantic

Watched this 80s classic in the middle of last week. A drama centring on the tribulations of a young working-class secretary trying to get ahead despite the machinations of her scheming, two-faced boss. Also features the lovely Harrison Ford as a man who likes and respects the main character for who she is, and supports her in her career. I'd give it an 8/10.

hoping other people join me on this thread so that I don't just look like a lone netflix weirdo

Friends with kids is really good.

The other woman was interesting.

Hunger games 10/10.

DrNick · 17/02/2014 18:56

is weeds on there?

moonfacebaby · 17/02/2014 18:57

Seven Psychopaths was great - brilliant cast, funny, dark & the best film I've seen on Netflix so far.

Innocentbystander01 · 17/02/2014 18:57

Yeah weeds is on.

Yama · 17/02/2014 18:58

DrNick - the tv series Weeds. If so, yes that's on Netflix.

noswingpark · 17/02/2014 19:02

The best film I have seen on there is SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. Absolutely brilliant feel good film its about journalists tracking down a man who placed an ad for someone to time travel with him.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/02/2014 19:07

Just noticed they added Looper recently. DH and I saw it at the cinema and really liked it, but it's one of those twisty plots (like Inception) so not everyone's cuppa. Interesting, actiony thriller thing with Bruce Willis and again, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I'm not the president of his fanclub or anything, I promise!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/02/2014 19:10

Oh sorry DH just told me Looper is on Lovefilm. Sorry!

Thanks to this thread, I have just watched TalHotBlond.

Riveting and shocking.

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrong · 17/02/2014 19:17

Been waiting for Rudy to come out on DVD in the UK forever but finally found it on Netflix. A boy film really - think the male version of Flashdance. American football. American dream. No romance - it really is all about passion for sport and never giving up but I looove it - I cry every time.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/02/2014 19:19

Oh my God I love Rudy!

Muddiboots · 17/02/2014 19:20

Another vote for 21 jump street
For anyone watching with teenage dd, gossip girl and life unexpected are both series that are currently providing family viewing, and bearable Grin

DownstairsMixUp · 17/02/2014 19:23

Are we allowed to mention series programmes to? I've been watching Orange is the new black and I'm hooked!

QueenofLouisiana · 17/02/2014 19:34

I watched Orange is the New Black last night (well, 1st episode). Really enjoyed it. Also just is covered The Bridge- I know, a bit behind everyone else on that one.

I only signed up on Saturday, trying to make the most of my free month!

TooOldForGlitter · 17/02/2014 19:59

Oh we need a thread for lovefilm recommendations. Once i've finished season 2 of walking dead im lost!

knitknack · 17/02/2014 20:10

I like watching box sets on netflicks - orange is the new black, person of interest, house of cards and criminal minds. Oooh, and documentaries! It's brilliant for documentaries....

OberonTheHopeful · 17/02/2014 20:11

Would people recommend Netflix over Lovefilm (I currently subscribe to the latter)?

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 17/02/2014 20:21

ah thanks!!! I've been scrolling through endlessly trying to decide what to watch next and now I have an idea.

so my critique...

The Paperboy Matthew Mconaghy, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack

MM is a journalist, ZE his young brother.

NK is in a penpal relationship with JC, who is in prison for a murder he says he didn't commit. They are engaged even though they've never physically met.

NK gets MM onboard to tell JC story and get a retrial and acquittal.

ZE is obsessed with NK.

Bit weird, quite disturbing in parts and I felt weirder out by JC's character, eurgh! I really enjoyed it though.

Magic Mike

Pile of crap, still don't really understand what was going on. Have since read that it is based on Channing Tatum's life as a stripper. Utter yawn fest.

TinyDiamond · 17/02/2014 20:41

love the thread. All of mine have been mentioned already but will think!

ItsSoooFluffy · 17/02/2014 20:47

Thanks for the recommendations will check some of these out. I watched zombieland the other night. Really enjoyed it.

NotGoodNotBad · 17/02/2014 21:12

Melancholia

Unusual!

DavidTwattenborough · 18/02/2014 11:26

zombieland

Ooh agreed, great film.

If you enjoyed that you should also try Adventureland. It's not a horror but also stars Jesse Eisenberg, and has the same sort of feel & sensibility and sense of humour. It seems to have slipped under the radar a bit - I hadn't heard much about it before watching it but really enjoyed it.

Would people recommend Netflix over Lovefilm

Yes because you can watch so much more - it's full of DVD box sets (weeds, breaking bad, Arrested Development, and some pleasantly enjoyable old reality TV stuff like Gossip Girl & The Real Housewives of New York) and the netflix originals series are brilliant (Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, etc).

In addition it has hundreds of films - a lot of dross but a lot of really good stuff if you know what to look for (hence starting this thread!)

You can watch so much - we use it every night and at weekends, and you can watch as much stuff as you like - and in addition because you can login remotely, if DP is away working he can watch something different from me when he's away, and I can watch it at home, both on the same login.

The Paperboy ought to be good but I couldn't get past John Cusak wanking in his trousers whilst watched by the kid from High School Musical

ItsSoooFluffy · 18/02/2014 15:43

Thanks David Twattenborough. I will have a look at Adventureland. I watched Talhotblond last night after some people recommending it. Was quite shocking.
