Shall we have a Netflix films recommendation thread?

Ok, no idea whether this will take off, but it seemed like it was worth a try!

There's so much choice on Netflix I thought it would be good to start a recommendations thread.

I suggest putting the film title in BOLD, then an emoticon or a few words to help others scan the thread to find something to suit their mood. Hope others will join me on this thread as I'm always looking for something new to try!

Working Girl
Wine Empowering drama
Flowers Heartwarming & romantic

Watched this 80s classic in the middle of last week. A drama centring on the tribulations of a young working-class secretary trying to get ahead despite the machinations of her scheming, two-faced boss. Also features the lovely Harrison Ford as a man who likes and respects the main character for who she is, and supports her in her career. I'd give it an 8/10.

hoping other people join me on this thread so that I don't just look like a lone netflix weirdo

LucilleBluth · 17/02/2014 15:28

Can I recommend a TV show..... It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia there are ten seasons on Netflix, I literally cry laughing at least once an episode.

LucilleBluth · 17/02/2014 15:30

And another TV show that won't be to everyone's taste, Portlandia, I love it.

DavidTwattenborough · 17/02/2014 15:32

If TalHotBlond is the docu I'm thinking of, it gave me nightmares after I watched it.

Catfish is about the same subject matter (ie somebody pretending to be someone they're not online), but it isn't creepy in the same way TalHotBlond is - because of the people involved. So if you go into Catfish expecting a horror story, that's not really what you get, IYSWIM?

can lend anyone the DVD if you like

DavidTwattenborough · 17/02/2014 15:35

Have you got any film recommendations LucilleBluth? With the series it's easier to find things you like, but a lot of films you have to search for because they don't pop up in the genre menus.

You can get The Imposter on the american netflix (if you are naughty like me and have unblocked it), I might watch it tonight, it looks quite good.

TawdryTatou · 17/02/2014 15:46

Orange is the New Black is fab

And I watched Frankie and Johnny the other night and really enjoyed it.

shakinstevenslovechild · 17/02/2014 15:50

I watched a film called Boy Wonder last week too.

Again, not something I would usually watch, but it was really good. Quite violent in places, but the storyline was excellent and the ending was brilliant.

Bagtrainlady · 17/02/2014 16:02

Shameless place mark as all I seem to watch on Netflix is kids tv or Buffy!

Will try 21 Jump St - was a bit puzzled why there was no young Johnny Depp!

Origamiboat · 17/02/2014 16:28

Seven Pounds. An interesting concept starring Will Smith.

shakinstevenslovechild · 17/02/2014 17:45

Dwerf, thank you for recommending Once I just sat and watched it, and shed a wee tear. I would never have given it a second glance. A beautiful, understated film.

Suzannewithaplan · 17/02/2014 18:22

I shall be investigating the recommendations on this thread as I struggle to find anything on Netflix that grabs me

ggirl · 17/02/2014 18:28

50/50 is comedy about a young guy diagnosed with a brain tumour and how the people closest to him treat him because of it. Surprisingly funny and poignant. Stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/02/2014 18:47

Sorry

50/50

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/02/2014 18:50

I watched into the wild after doing a random browse about a year ago (just checked it's still on there)
Lovely film, very sad and made me sob

Seconding justified as a series.

Yama · 17/02/2014 18:51

The Hunger Games

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 17/02/2014 18:53

Second Into the Wild.

We bought the soundtrack after watching it.

Proper sob-fest, though.

sublimecorpse · 17/02/2014 18:54

Over the weekend I watched:

Hard Candy - loved it

Shutter Island - loved it

You don't mess with the Zohan - pissed myself!
