Shall we have a Netflix films recommendation thread?

Ok, no idea whether this will take off, but it seemed like it was worth a try!

There's so much choice on Netflix I thought it would be good to start a recommendations thread.

I suggest putting the film title in BOLD, then an emoticon or a few words to help others scan the thread to find something to suit their mood. Hope others will join me on this thread as I'm always looking for something new to try!

Working Girl
Wine Empowering drama
Flowers Heartwarming & romantic

Watched this 80s classic in the middle of last week. A drama centring on the tribulations of a young working-class secretary trying to get ahead despite the machinations of her scheming, two-faced boss. Also features the lovely Harrison Ford as a man who likes and respects the main character for who she is, and supports her in her career. I'd give it an 8/10.

hoping other people join me on this thread so that I don't just look like a lone netflix weirdo

Why can I not find weeds on my netflix?? Would love to watch it.

Just watched the bridge. Heartbreaking

OberonTheHopeful · 18/02/2014 16:07

Thank you DavidTwattenborough, that's really helpful! Looks like it may be time to make a switch :)

Dwerf · 18/02/2014 16:12

shakinstevenslovechild It really is a lovely little film, I wish i could find the end credits on youtube so I can rip it

pumpkinsweetie · 18/02/2014 16:23

Will definitely be checking these outSmile

HettiePetal · 18/02/2014 16:26

The Hunt and A Royal Affair

Both Danish, both starring Mads Mikkelsen and both absolutely fantastic. Both got Oscar noms too, I believe.

Also, Robot and Frank and Safety Not Guaranteed - small, different and lovely films.

DavidTwattenborough · 18/02/2014 16:51

You're welcome Fluffy & Oberon, always happy to share the netflix love!

Yeah I think Talhotblond was on Channel 4 a while back, gripping stuff but very disturbing, it kept me awake for quite a few nights afterwards! (and I'm not easily shocked...)

bafana I don't know why you can't find Weeds - wonder if they've taken it off? They do periodically take things off, so I wonder if it might have been culled - try looking in the TV Series section?

I'm getting quite a good few recommendations from this list myself! Have just added The Hunt and Once to my to-watch list.

A Mighty Heart Angelina Jolie. Film about Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped in Pakistan.

DownstairsMixUp · 18/02/2014 17:10

I really liked Magic Mike! I just find male strippers really funny for some reason. I don't get women screaming over them I just can't stop giggling! It's so childish! Grin

Would people recommend Netflix over Lovefilm

I know this question has already been answered, but I'd agree as well.

We had the Lovefilm free trial and then we did the Netflix free trial and we just found so much more on Netflix that we wanted to watch.

The only thing that DH didn't like is that he got into a Lovefilm exclusive series called ''Vikings'' - sort of like the Tudors or Game of Thrones, but with Vikings - and he can't get it on Netflix

HettiePetal · 18/02/2014 17:32

David I demand that you add A Royal Affair too. Yes, demand. If it doesn't make it into your top 10 list of best films ever I shall be amazed. (Assuming you haven't already seen it).

That goes for everyone actually. I can't recommend it highly enough.

:)

Cocolepew · 18/02/2014 17:37

Oh thanks for this. If Ic an wrestle the controller out of DHs Breaking Bads obsessed hands, I'll give these ago.
Is 21 Jump Street suitable for younger teens?

Is Attack the Block on NF or Lovefilm, I enjoyed that.

Lovefilm is worth getting for Rescue Me.

OberonTheHopeful · 18/02/2014 17:56

Cocolepew Attack The Block was on Film4 recently, and they tend to repeat films a lot so may be on again. I tend to go through the Film4 listings every so often and record anything I like the look of!

Cocolepew · 18/02/2014 19:12

Oh maybe I saw it on that? Anyways it wasn't very highbrow but entertained me for an hour or so Grin.

nickymanchester · 18/02/2014 19:32

Just finished watching The Makeover with David Walton and Julia Stiles.

Really enjoyed it - doesn't hurt things that David Walton is quite cute - DH enjoyed it as well, but I do think that he has a bit of a thing for the female lead.

It's basically a reverse ''My Fair Lady'' with the bloke being mentored/taught by Julia Stiles and then they eventually fall for each other.

If you've ever seen My Fair Lady then the parallels are really quite close, except it's in reverse.

ihatethecold · 18/02/2014 19:53

We have only just signed up after ditching love film .
Too many scratched discs.

We have been watching the louie Theroux documentaries. The one about gambling in Las Vegas was an eye opener.

OberonTheHopeful · 18/02/2014 20:06

Interesting feedback about Lovefilm, I've been getting a bit fed up with them so definitely looks like time to switch.

Cocolepew I saw it by accident! I went to the cinema with some friends but didn't know what we were seeing, didn't even know the title of the film until I get my ticket and hadn't heard of it. Definitely a surprise Grin

jigsawlady · 18/02/2014 20:06

Hurricane a boxing one with Denzel Washington, true story and i'm a sucker for anything with words at the end.

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 18/02/2014 20:07

Pagwatch that scene is beyond uncomfortable! I wasn't sure what the Director was trying to achieve having the others watching! We could have worked out he was a twisted freak if it were just him and Kidman in the scene.

DavidTwattenborough · 18/02/2014 20:23

Haha Hettie, ok I will do as you demand and add A Royal Affair to my to-watch list! I'll try & watch it this weekend and report back Grin

Coco I'm not sure whether 21 Jump Street is suitable for young teens - I'm inclined to say it is, but it was ages ago when I watched it & my memory is not great. Maybe someone who has watched it more recently could say?

DottyDot · 18/02/2014 20:31

50/50 is brilliant - dp and I loved it.

red dawn is great if you have 12 year old boys round for a sleepover - and I enjoyed it too Grin

person of interest
covert affairs
Both great tv programmes if you like spy/adventure stuff

orange is the new black - dp and I currently obsessed with this!

mummybare · 18/02/2014 20:39

Driving lessons

Julie Walters and Ron Weasley from Harry Potter. Feel-good British comedy. Reasonably predictable but sweet and JW is fabulously watchable.

ItsSoooFluffy · 18/02/2014 21:13

Dark skies. It's quite jumpy in parts!

iloveeverton · 18/02/2014 21:48

I watched The Way a few months back- really enjoyed it and inspired me to want to do the walk from it!

I can't see it on there now do Netflix take films down?

Suzannewithaplan · 19/02/2014 01:35

Just finished talhotblonde, riveting!
(Mind you it doesn't surprise me that something like that could happen)
