Tardis Grin

Davros · 26/12/2013 10:59

Tardis if you found the 50th hard to understand you won't have a hope with this one IMO! I didn't understand it and I didn't really like it, back to MS's usual standard. I didn't like the naked stuff, just stupid, I didn't like the ageing and I thought the place Ckara lived was all wrong and her family

fancyanotherfez · 26/12/2013 11:28

The naked stuff was the only thing I didn't like. It was unnecessary. They could have done the bald gag without it with the same effect. I didn't mind the family. But MS is right up my street, so I suppose its horses for courses. I'll try not to be moany if I don't like PC (even though I think he's a brilliant actor)

Davros · 26/12/2013 11:54

I was very pleased that the 50th anniversary episode had made me like MS and I was looking forward to going back through his episodes (I will still do that) but this set me back on that score. I don't like Xmas ones that are dark and grim, dark in terms of colours and lighting, not mood but grim in mood obvs

OodKingWenceslas · 26/12/2013 12:31

Yes I felt the naked bit (& Clara's family) was wrong.

NotDavidTennant · 26/12/2013 12:33

I really don't understand how Steven Moffatt can go from writing something as wonderful as the 50th anniversary episode to writing something as disappointing and muddled as last night's episode. He seems to have no consistency as a writer.

polyhymnia · 26/12/2013 12:54

Didn't understand it, didn't like it.

Can only hope Moffat and co produce something better for Capaldi's series next year.

BalloonSlayer · 26/12/2013 15:45

I thought the naked bit was funny.

I didn't like the way all the monsters/enemies made these lightning-fast "guest appearances" - eg "ooh look weeping angels, peril, peril, peril, whew we're safe now" all done and dusted in about 40 seconds; I think there was a 20 second bit of cybermen "whoops there's a load of cybermen, oh no they're chasing me, run away, run away, safe now, that's all right then." All a bit cheap and crap really, as if they had to promise "all the monsters will be in it" to make you watch and then all he did was run away from them.

Liked the quick regeneration though, was expecting a big David Tennant style scenery chewing regeneration scene but suddenly whoosh! there he was, Malcolm the next Doctor. Looked a bit old though.

Was whatserface from the Papal thingummy River Song in another guise?

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 17:15

Tardis Paul Grin thanks for thinking of me!

actually preffered this one to the last one Shock. agree there was NOOOOOOO need for the nakedness bit, and was very confusing, the prosthetics on MS were awful, the Handles voice I thought was Alex (Mr Smith in SJA) Armstrong.

watsaname from Fringe distracted me a bit-why does the Moff always have to have a sexual flirty thing going on?

Claras actually brilliant, took me a while to warm to her, but JLC plays her really well.

sobs at the bow tie and a tear when Amy appeared (that was the 'luke') moment there.

the regeneration was a bit quick, just as I was about to fully sob theres PC! Tardis but I KNEW PC would come in brilliant 'my kidneys'!

just hope with PC there they'll go a bit more retro/Tom Bakery type stuff AGAIN.

SO WILL WATCH AGAIN TONIGHT AND TRY AND MAKE SENSE OF IT ALL! SO THE sILENCE ARE NOT EVIL BUT PRIESTS?????? (sorry, caps locked then cant be bothered to retype!)

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 17:18

was expecting this thread to fill up more though aftyer the episode!" just logged in and only ONE page more?????Tardis

we just watched the Sarah jane adventures when she gets married and the 10th docs there, and K9 and the trickster (who sooooooooooooooo should be a regular in DW, better than the current master).

nmow THAT was a good episode. I miss SJ

OP posts:
OodKingWenceslas · 26/12/2013 18:06

I think when we first see the silence they are just priests but in the 300 (?) years that the doctor is on the planet over laps the time when the silence try to kill the Doctor (river song etc) .

OodKingWenceslas · 26/12/2013 18:07

Oh & we thought it was Mr Smith too!

RustyBear · 26/12/2013 18:13

I think the silence are all priests, but not all the priests are evil. Tasha Lem said that Madame Kovarian led a breakaway group to try to kill the Doctor, so I'd guess that some of the priests were in that group, just as some of the soldiers were, but not necessarily all of them.

TheSparklyPussycat · 26/12/2013 18:13

AIUI the Really Nasty Silence things were a break-away group - kind of like a gang of time terrorists...

As to plots, I don't think they are serendiptious, more the result of several bright people paid to think about nothing but Dr Who for years, and managing fairly successfully to tie it together logically - a kind of reverse engineering. There will always be holes, but we have ended up with surprisingly few, I feel. (And I can't help wondering if the granddaughter might turn up sometime...)

Davros · 26/12/2013 18:16

I agree about the lightning appearances if some monsters, seemed very token

DonnaFlapperBlitzen · 26/12/2013 18:22

I enjoyed it, just confused whether The doctor recieved a whole new set of 12 regenerations?
I'll watch it when I get home tomo night (with the subtitles on) Grin Tardis Tardis

OodKingWenceslas · 26/12/2013 18:27

Yes he said something about 13?

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 18:28

Donna we ALWAYS have the subtitles on, they talk too fast to follow! and we 'get' more stuff in writing too.

I was wondering about Susan too sparkly. is she (let me think!)
okay, RS is Amy and Rorys daughter.
doctors wife.
she had a daughter/son who then had a daughter making her Susan Foreman? MUST be a story/plotline ready there sometime, that would be brilliant and the best person to write that one would be Mark Gattis or Richard Curtis IMO).

and agree about the cameos of aliens too.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 18:29

posted too soon! was glad the crack in the wall had something to do though, and the time lords were kind enough to gift the doc with a new regeneration! hope Clara sticks around for a bit.

OP posts:
marmitecat · 26/12/2013 18:50

I thought the episode was a bit too pleased with itself. The brief appearances of all the monsters made the whole thing superficial. And the wig? Nice plot twist with the key but then went nowhere. Too many ideas and concepts in one episode. Someone should have been a bit firmer with the red pen when this was in script stage.

I thought Clara was good but hated the aging doctor thing as ms wasn't consistent in his decrepitude. Nudity was unnecessary.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 19:00

yes, its like the Moff thought 'ha, were doing so well we can write any old croc and the fans will lap it up and we'll get a big fat pat on the back and kudos!'.

OOh, its on now again! maybe better 2nd time round?

OP posts:
LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 19:01

The stairs on Claras flats looks just like the Powell estate ones with Rose!

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 26/12/2013 19:13

I didnt really enjoy it I'm afraid. Way too confusing after a couple of glasses of wine and I didnt like the Doctor hanging around like that - theres no way he would do that he would do something cool and pazzazy. We are going to watch it again with clearer heads.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 26/12/2013 19:37

I love Clara more and more as time goes on. after the gobby flirtyness of Rose, the goo goo unrequited love of Martha, the brilliant but loud DOnna, the shite kylie and the other 'specials' companions, the gobby Amy, iots nice theres someone who can hold her own, make decisions for herself, but know her place with the doc.

quite Sarah Jane- like really.

TBH anyone else getting as bit tired of the daleks seemingly appearing in every other episode? they've always been the best most well known but better when they appeared intermittently.

im finding them less scary the more they appear! Tardis Tardis
