I'm still stupidly excited about the 'new' Troughton episodes, but just to add to the fun, Watch are showing some seriously classic episodes today from 2pm. Any else watching? And what are you looking forward to as we approach the anniversary episode and beyond?

Have had to name change because this would out me completely!
I just have to break a habit of a life time and shout out that Dr Who is my uncle! This is the coolest I could ever be in my life, everything he has done before this is great and all but this, this is it, he is now officially Dr Who, even though it was a once only thing I still bask in the glory and coolness by association lol!
Think I may make a plaque for the front door...

I loved the show all through though, we went to see it at the cinema taking the children with us and really enjoyed it and just loved all the little nods and one liners. Didn't expect them to change the history of the time war though so that was a great surprise. Cried when the three doctors where all hand on the button willing to help each other end the war and then again at the very end, think most people did!

Have to say that of all the roles John has done I saw the most of the real him in this one, the withering looks and general friendly grump is very him although the technology would truly stump the real man!

Looking forward very much to watching the whole thing again to catch all the little things I am sure I missed (ds spilt his drink and ended up nakid from the waist down with the fleece he thankfully took with him wrapped around him. He then fell asleep and missed the last 20 minuets bless him!

Can't wait for Christmas special and regeneration after that I am hoping the search for gallifrey is on!! Tardis

GlaikitOfGallifrey · 24/11/2013 18:25

John hurt is your uncle! Kudos! He is amazing bask away

bialystockandbloom · 24/11/2013 18:25

Thedoctorsneice do you mean John Hurt?! Shock

Wow wow WOW!!!

Fuckityfuckers · 24/11/2013 18:27

Am I right in thinking that they didn't change anything, that this was always what happened to end the time war? There was a comment about it being time locked, and that something had let them through, I took that to mean they were always supposed to be there.

Plus th fact that no one except MS would remember.

So this was always how the War Doctor ended the time war, he just couldn't remember because of the time interference from having all 13 incarnations around. So all he remembers is standing there pressing the button.

Tee2072 · 24/11/2013 18:28

That is so cool TheDoctorsNiece!

Tell your uncle we adore him around here, although we were sad he never mentioned Merlin last night. Not really. Grin

Tee2072 · 24/11/2013 18:29

What didn't you get? It was perfectly clear.

TheSontaranPussycat · 24/11/2013 18:29

You mean it's not real, SoupDragon??!!

bialystockandbloom · 24/11/2013 18:30

fuckity yes that was how I understood it. That Matt Smith (from now on) would be the only one who would remember doing this.

It may have been answered somewhere else on this thread, but the thing I was confused about was who the 'curator' figure Tom Baker is now?

MavisKorvarian · 24/11/2013 18:37

Much coolness TheDoctorsNiece!

The thing I love most about Doctor Who is not who plays The Doctor, or the companions or the aliens or the baddies but the sheer lovely premise of travelling through the whole of time and space. The cleverness of The Doctor, the lack of shoot em ups and relying on brains and eccentricities to get you through. My 7 year old DS is known to sigh wistfully, "if only I could be The Doctor" and, well into my forties, I know exactly what he means.

It's just a shame I was so shit at physics.

TheSontaranPussycat · 24/11/2013 18:38

On R4 news they were saying the episode has broken the record for number of people watching a simultaneous broadcast.

Then they went on to say that although 10.5 watched it in Britian, more watched Strictly Hmm But I'm presuming that's the TV viewing figures - and they didn't count the cinema goers? Tbh, I thought it was a rather snarky thing to say.

neice that is cooool.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 24/11/2013 18:39

'get it' as in: find an actual story in it Grin and also to love it as much as everyone else does ! Tardis Grin.

yes yes, its only a programme..........

FannyMcNally · 24/11/2013 18:45

At the end of 5(ish) they showed the part of the programme where MS gets down, touches the sand and makes a comment about it. Is this to do with the 3 doctors bringing sand in with them on their feet? When the scientist analyses it, does she say it's from NZ or somewhere? I can't remember if it played an important part in the programme or not.

Jux · 24/11/2013 18:45

John Hurt's neice?! Wow! That is really cool; you are the neice of a National Treasure!

Tee2072 · 24/11/2013 18:50

I'm beginning to wonder if we were watching the same show, LetZygons.

TheDoctorsNiece · 24/11/2013 18:51

I guess that is true about it having always been the way the time war ended and it was just he didn't remember/know until now. The same has been true for us though, we thought the time ear ended with the total distraction of time lords and daleks so we are in the same boat as the doctor. That's more what I meant by them changing history. Not sure if that makes much sence!

Yes John Hurt, it is times like this that I wish I had kept my maden name, it's too hard trying to think of ways of telling everyone I come across that I am related to Doctor Who!
John himself kept it all very secret mind, we knew for ages that he was going to be in the anniversary eppisode but when it was reveiled that he was playing an incarnation of the Doctor earlier this year we where surprised with everyone else and have had to wait until last night to find out what was going on and if he was going to be an actual Dr Who, the fact he is now canon has just blown my mind! My 8 year old dd is so thrilled and can't wait to go to school tomorrow! Ds is a massive Dr Who fan but at 5.5 years old and with suspected autium he can't grasp it at all.

TheDoctrineOfWho · 24/11/2013 18:57

I thought the dust was suspicious because it came from the smashed statues?

LetZygonsbeZygons · 24/11/2013 18:59

well Tee as I said upthread, Im in a minority Smile.

everyones sharing their opinions, as am I.

ive just seen better.

Just watched Yonderland and didn't like it today- maybe its PMT !!!! Tardis

bialystockandbloom · 24/11/2013 19:07

doctorsneice Ds (6yo) is totally obsessed with it, and actually does have ASD ('high functioning'). I think it's partly because he loves the fact the Doctor solves things with cleverness rather than brawn, and because the idea of time/space travel is a pretty cerebral concept. The typical Marvel/superhero stuff has always left him completely cold, and he steers away from the rough and tumble stuff his peers are into.

There was some talk at the beginning of MS's reign of veiled references in some episodes to the Doctor being on the autistic spectrum.

Certainly think there's something in that appeals to 'geeks' - not saying autistic = geek but can see the affinity.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/11/2013 19:17

One or two bits did seem a bit written in to fit what we'd had before, the whole "I won't remember this, will I?", I saw quite a few comments on Facebook saying "How convenient!".

But in general it was good and I loved the Five(ish) Doctors.

ItsBiggerOnTheInside · 24/11/2013 19:21

ThedoctorsNiece, how amazingly cool that is! my kids love home for being the voice of the dragon in Merlin!

Surgeons, I hope you do get it second time round Grin Tardis

(I'm secretly hoping that the Tardis will stay for those who hunt for it in the same way that Bear does)

SoupDragon · 24/11/2013 19:21

I didn't understand why they wouldn't remember.

ItsBiggerOnTheInside · 24/11/2013 19:21

Polka, isn't that the ultimate paradox of time travel stories?

fancyanotherfez · 24/11/2013 19:31

My DS went off Doctor Who for a bit ( partly because episodes have been so sporadic) and got into Power Rangers and Ben 10 and the usual boy guff. The change in outlook was quite noticeable- away from brains solving a problem to lots of shooting and fighting and kicking. That's another reason I'm thrilled to see the Doctor back! Now for a full proper series...

needthemoney · 24/11/2013 19:32

Oh I liked it. BUT... I do wish there wasn't so much end-of-the-pier humour. All that sonic-screwdriver-as-penis-replacement mularkey and insinuations about respective cock size between MS and DT - really! And the buxom, come-hither Queen Elizabeth I and the intimation that DT had screwed her and that her "Virgin" Queen status was not entirely accurate.

I think Mr Moffat is a very good writer but his insistence on inserting all this stuff is a wee bit tiresome.

And the red stilletoes in that display of the most "deadly" weapons - someone on here said they belonged to River Song but I read it as the "weaponry" of the female of the species, bringing grown men to their knees etc... Thought it was a bit lame.

It wouldn't surprise me if Mr Moffat was a bit of a Jack Vettriano fan Wink
