Well, here we are again, another French Open. Yay ! Grin

It's a shame we wont see Murray, as he was playing very well, it would have been great to see the Top 5 'together' again.

No prizes for guessing who the favourite for the Mens is, VAMOS RAFA ! I'd love to see him win it for the 8th time.

Roger Fed is looking well, just started playing , it would be good to see him do well, although we all know Wimby is his best tournament.

Novak seemed to be struggling a bit earlier this year, after the Aussie Open win, it will be interesting to see how he fares this year on clay. Nicely set up so that he and Rafa will meet in the Semi's, should they both play well. Which easily leads to Rafa for the Final, and his 8th win ! Don't forget, Novak fans, that Rafa beat Nole in 4 sets last year. Wink

Serena Williams is looking her usual belting self, just thrashed her opponent, she must be a consideration for the win, as must last years winner, Maria Sharapova. I'd like to see Laura Robson do well, and Heather Watson, but realistically Laura could be out in the first round.

Hope everybody enjoys the tennis as much as I do, I'm going to have a great fortnight, 9:30am to 9:00pm everyday. Bliss !

Looking forward to having our usual daft threads running, along with the ogling and arguments. Here's to another great summer of tennis ! Wine

Am delighted this year as I have the choice between watching it on British or French TV. Have had to put up with French TV in the past which, undstandably, focusses on French players. Fine, but not when there is a major match going on at the same time with someonenwho has a hope of winning.

Since Murray isn't playing I would like for Tsonga to win. He is my favourite player, but on home ground tends to let his nerves get in the way.

I loved how Serena just did her post match interview in French. The crowds love it when players make an effort, which is one of the reasons Djoko is so popular here.

Raahh · 26/05/2013 14:27

VAMOS RAFA!

(although I probably won't get to watch much).

Rafa has definitely come back fighting, and must be feeling pretty confident having won his past couple of tournaments. Novak has been beaten early by far lesser players. But this is the only one he hasn't won, so he won't give up without a fight. I've actually warmed to him this yearShockGrin

I'd like a Fedal final, although Fed was comprehensively whupped in Rome.

And at least the lack of Murray has given Rafa a more realistic seeding, for his form at the championship.
I have become addicted to checking ranking points via this
atp rankings

Sadly, DD2 is no longer young and compliant and is not as happy to let me hog the tv as she wasSad

here's to a fab tennis summerWine

Raahh · 26/05/2013 14:42

Well, Petite-Simon has just given the French crowd something to cheer about- sorry to see Hewitt lose though, I have always loved watching him play- he's like a dog with a boneGrin

PetiteRaleuse · 26/05/2013 14:45

I love the way the French get behind their players, even the minor ones with no hope of winning much. And not just at R-G. Lots of the ATP tournaments are broadcast year round and they always make a big fuss of their players.

The Brits seem far less supportive of British tennis. Even since Murray won a slam there is still negativity.

Raahh · 26/05/2013 14:59

I saw a bit of one of Paire's matches last week- he's definitely one to watch. The French now have more players in the top 50 than any other country. It's a very different picture to when the US and Australia were dominant.

Yay- Ferrer up next- I like watching him.

roundtoit · 26/05/2013 15:04

Its such a treat now to have all the French Open on tv , all we used to get was the finals if we were lucky. Two glorious weeks of tennis , roll on.

marjproops · 26/05/2013 17:56

and heres the worlds biggest tennis fan here! watching Troiki and Blake atm. enjoyed Ivanovics match this morn.

enjoyed Simon and Hewwit too.

but....as a true fan...still don't go for the attitude/disgusting players.dont care how well they play......

so WONT be watching SHOUTapova, azarenka, Serena(never known a player who sooo contradicts her name!!) or, sorry OP but Ruffascratcha maballs eeewwwwww.

DJOKO to win mens and Radwanska for the girls.

who do you all want?

Ashoething · 26/05/2013 20:32

VAMOS RAFA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

marjproops · 26/05/2013 20:33

That was BRILLIANT!

cant stand the Williams sisters but as venus is the lesser of 2 evils watched this one. well done Ursula and well done Venus for the fight!

Raahh · 27/05/2013 10:43

VAMOS RAFA! Second on after the Li Na match this morning. I'd love to see Li Na do well again. I don't follow the womens' game really, although it's great to see the British women doing well.
Laura Robson obviously has a tough opening round- but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that she could cause an upset.

Probably won't get to watch nearly as much of this as I would like-damn you, school holidaysGrin

Raahh · 27/05/2013 12:03

Well- bizarre umpiring in the Li Na matchConfused

But Nadal should be next!!

VAMOS!

Raahh · 27/05/2013 14:21

I knew I'dd miss some- and while I was out, Nadal came out and lost the first set!

Raahh · 27/05/2013 15:22

Smile phew! had horrible visions of a Nadal loss there, but he came through.

It's raining here,so will now let dd1 watch something elseGrin - she has been very patient..

magimedi · 27/05/2013 16:51

Another tennis fan signing in here - but won't get too see too much of the French.

Sad that Laura went off after such a good start.

Did anyone see someone in the crowd holding up a piece of paper when the camera was on him, that said:

"I miss you Mary Z"

Mad em sniiger & think of Maryz!!

Just saw the tie break of the first set with Berdych & Monfils. Does Monfils have fitness/breathing/asthma issues? I know he covers a hell of a lot of court, but he seemed to be really struggling between points.

And I hate Rafa's moustache - it really does not suit him. But I still love him!!

Raahh · 27/05/2013 17:13

I felt sorry for laura- Wozniacki has been very shaky of late, so it was a real opportunity for her, but she did a little better than the score line suggested.

I love Monfils- he is one of those players that promised much and then didn't deliver. Good to see him making the most of home advantage.

Grin @ Mary Z

Raahh · 27/05/2013 17:14

yy to the moustache- hopefully he won't be doing an Ivanisevic, and refusing to shave until he wins (although Goran looked fab with a beardBlush)

marjproops · 27/05/2013 17:49

at least maybe with the moustache hell scratch that instead Grin

Li Na match. good point her opponent made about shoutpova and the like getting away with all their noise.

Raahh · 27/05/2013 18:08

It was a really bizarre point- marj- think the umpire fucked up, and then couldn't get herself out of it. Her reasoning made no sense. Players shout things all the time on court. I would love to see the grunters gagged, thoughGrin

marjproops · 27/05/2013 18:13

Fabrice Santoro (yum!) said afterwards that theres noise-grunting and then theres the words yes and no.

apparently theres a diff and the player gets penalised for a word not a sound! bizzaro.

I thought at one point Tsonga shouted no before a rally finished yet he got away with it? didn't see whole match so don't know how that one panned out.

Raahh · 27/05/2013 18:22

it's an odd thing-I wonder if the same would apply if she'd shouted in Spanish or Dutch? Sometimes it hard to stop yourself saying things on the spur of the moment. Of course, swearing would be different...

The grunters annoy me- I am of the (unfounded, personal) opinion that they know exactly how annoying they are,and it is all part of the game plan. Grin Noise due to exertion is one thing- screaming when performing a weak second serve- unnecessary.

marjproops · 27/05/2013 18:51

agree completely Raahh about the grunting.

Azarenka said shes always done it and wont stop. bet she would straight away if she was fined for it every time.

Raahh · 27/05/2013 19:06

Exactly- fined, or docked points. Would soon shut 'em up!

Raahh · 27/05/2013 19:39

Well done Monfils! Fab match, but I do feel for Berdych.

marjproops · 27/05/2013 19:42

oh flip. missed it cos Dcs watching something! well done tho Monfils.

MrsVamosRAFA · 27/05/2013 20:39

Cor, dearie me did my heart miss a beat earlier today !

Rafa looked good, his opponent played really well though. It got to a point in the 2nd set I said to DH that if Rafa loses he's out.

Hope he has an easier 2nd round. My heart can't take it !

Sharapova won easy, Laura Robson was doomed from the minute Judy Murray said she should win, poor girl. Wink Li Na played well too.

Glad to see Tsonga through. LOVED the Berdych/Monfils match, great play and sportsmanship from both. I do wonder how much farther Gael can go, but I wish him well. That looked warm out there later on too. Phew !

I assume Novak plays tomorrow, apologies, I haven't looked at the schedule yet, it will be interesting to see how he is shaping up.

I think Heather is due to play too, but they said on tv that she is just recovering from glandular fever, so not too expect too much.

From some of the play today, we could be in for some fantastic tennis ! Smile
