The dog was indeed a star. Poor dog.

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 12:53

Just because there was a red van and a person near it, doesn't mean that person is connected to the red van. My postman parks his van and then walks up the road. I seem to remember that jack said the person by the van was wearing a High-Vis jacket so he assumed it was a postman. Doesn't have to be.

newpencilcase · 09/04/2013 12:54

My money's still on Ollie. He was a bit quick to say that the last time he had 'anything to do with Danny' was 6 months ago.

I don't know why he would go with Mark, Nige and the two kids paintballing if he wasn't involved on a more regular basis.

NorthernLurker · 09/04/2013 12:57

So the red van is a red herring and didn't belong to high vis bloke at all? Good thinking!

Why go to the cliff top house? Because something was left there but it can't be anything obvious because the police would have seen it - so something in plain sight which after PQ's arrest became a problem? The person at the hut seemed tall and running fast. Could it have been Becca? Could it have been Beth? Though she isn't tall is she? There must be some purpose to her endless jogging.

theliverpoolone · 09/04/2013 12:58

Ollie very quickly reeled off a list of names of people who'd used his boat - I missed most of them but did catch him say Nige , the vicar and the postman. Not much sign of DT and OC working through the list though...... they were too focused on the vicar.

I dont really understand why Jacks death seemed to exonerate him - surely in rl that could also be seen as a sign of guilt? I know he didnt do it, but dont get why the police and community are so sure now he's innocent Confused

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 13:07

"but it can't be anything obvious because the police would have seen it"

you mean like the way they have followed up the repeated conversations about Danny owning a smart phone.

or the fact that they didn't check his so called closest friend's computer.

or that they just let his sister's possible involvement with drug selling and finding money under the victims bed go without following it up?

that the forensics haven't mentioned anything about Danny's blood even though in the scenes the viewers saw he was bleeding.

The police are a bit shit really aren't they.

NorthernLurker · 09/04/2013 13:14

Ah yes, good point. By that logic they've probabvly missed 'the killer was X' painted on the walls......

GreenShadow · 09/04/2013 13:45

Nothing to do with the detective work or over all story, but did anyone else find it strange that Chloe was off school for 8 weeks! Not sure how old she is but assume about 15. In which case she would have missed at least half a term's work - very unlikely I would have thought, however upset she was.

I was also surprised that the father hadn't returned to work well before this.

PuffPants · 09/04/2013 15:04

Yes, I was surprised it had been 8 weeks. Hard though it is, children are usually encouraged to get back to school much quicker than that. My friend's brother died when we were at school and she was back after two weeks.

I'm really disappointed by Danny's family. I bet he's up there watching them thinking "What, nothing? Don't I deserve a few tears?" They all just seem a bit pissed off rather than grief-stricken. And already they're fed up of being "the dead boy's sister/mother". I feel quite cross with them all, especially the sulky jogging mum.

I think the big problem is that none of the actors know if it's them, therefore they all have to act as though it might be and they all look suspicious. Which is a really strange strategy as in RL people don't unknowingly committ murders.

Agree the detective work is crap. Any one of us would have cracked it by now. I would take Tom to one side and say "If you don't tell me who killed Danny I'll confiscate your gameboy". He'd soon spill.

And why, oh why, is nobody going through Danny's phone records or, more to the point, finding out how he came by £500 and a pile of drugs??

LIZS · 09/04/2013 15:14

I was confused over the timing. Danny's death was clearly summer time , Sports Day etc, and they were worried about the coming summer season . Are we now in the Autumn, so holidaymakers could have trampled over any evidence in the caravans etc or did Danny die in May and we are now in July ? What of Chloe's exams etc if she is only now back ?The pg doesn't seem to be evident, she is still out running as skinny as ever, and has she seen a midwife yet ?

DinoSnores · 09/04/2013 15:15

"And why, oh why, is nobody going through Danny's phone records or, more to the point, finding out how he came by £500 and a pile of drugs??"

Chloe has explained the drugs, and I got the impression they thought the money was what the hotel woman had paid for them for her London guests.

Chippychop · 09/04/2013 15:27

I'm wondering why Ellie's some the BFF of Danny said he hated him

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 15:32

it's still bad police work if they just accepted the explanation from a teenager and a drug selling landlady!

I think I read that it was shot between August and november and they definitely had shots of leaves falling off trees last night to show the passing of time into Autumn, so maybe September time now? Which means the action started around mid - end July as school started back?

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 15:35

"I'm wondering why Ellie's son, the BFF of Danny, said he hated him"

because they were friends but fell out before he went on holiday over something to do with both families.

paternity of the unborn child
paternity of the police woman's child (younger or older)
paternity of the dead boy
paternity of the dead boy's sister

something big like that?

PuffPants · 09/04/2013 15:44

Dino, the drugs thing is still a big red flag though, surely? It was found in Danny's room, not his sisters. It's still illegal and she didn't explain why the drugs were there, did she? I thought she had acquired some for Becca but why was there more under the bed and why had she hidden the cash? Who exactly did she get it from? Why would the police not pursue any of this?

ClaraOswinOswald · 09/04/2013 15:45

I thought that it started in summer (sports day) so 6 of the 8 weeks would have been the summer holidays. No idea who dunnit though.

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 15:49

but they had just returned from a 2 or 3 week holiday at the beginning of the series (the policewoman's family) so how would that work - the sports day summer holiday thing?

DuelingFanjo · 09/04/2013 15:50

I mean - they came back from a holiday and the day later there was a sports day - did they have a sports day on the first day back from the summer holiday?

perhaps the writer doesn't know much about the way school terms/holidays work and perhaps it's not really relevant.

they were definitely on holiday just before the action started though.

ClaraOswinOswald · 09/04/2013 15:56

The writer didn't know that schools phone up when children don't turn up and the parents haven't contacted them so probably don't get the whole holiday thing either.

I still blame the school for the whole thing. :)

FIFIBEBE · 09/04/2013 16:07

If Ellie had just been on holiday with her family at the time of the murder she must have taken Tom out of school to do that. Little bit odd. Just realised x posts sorry, you have all realised that. Late to the party!

LIZS · 09/04/2013 16:14

Some areas have a 2 week half term in summer ! However 8 weeks on would be in the summer holidays. Was Tom wearing the senior uniform , same as Chloe, whereas the Sports Day was primary?

NorthernLurker · 09/04/2013 16:45

Ellie would have had to take her holidays when she could get them - being police. Therefore perhaps the school would authorise absence?
It does seem hard to believe that Ellie's dh would come bac from holiday and without pausing for breath be in a position to kill his son't best friend for reasons unknown.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 09/04/2013 17:14

It's either Nigel or Ollie in my mind. Or both. That Susan Wright has an iffy background and is a dodgy sort, but it would be too obvious for her to be the murderer. I think Tom knows who did it, but not directly involved with Danny's death. If it is his Dad it may explain his weird behaviour with Danny's family.

What the hell with the crossbow and the poor dog?!

Fiderer · 09/04/2013 17:23

I came up with a theory about PQ and Nige in a boring meeting today. Have posted it on the other thread and copied it here. I keep reading both threads to keep up with it all Grin

I have a theory about PQ and Nige. When the police found Mark Latimer's fingerprints in the hut, he said it was because he'd done a plumbing job there and she had given him the keys.

PQ denied it but then Ellie checked on his paperwork and he had worked there. Nige could have had a copy made (quick trip in the van because he'd forgotten his phone or something) and then used the hut for stashing or dealing something dodgy he was up to.

As the police didn't find it, it could be drugs and not whopping canisters of diesel. Cash he could hide at home, unlikely to be searched but drugs safer somewhere else.

PQ might have disturbed him - and maybe Danny was there by chance or not, if he was delivering the drugs for Nige and that's how she got the skateboard and what's between them.

She could also have dropped Danny's mobile into the paper bag just to cause trouble for Jack. The real culprit would have chucked it in the sea. Maybe that's what Nige did with the smartphone Ellie thought Danny had.

And, , Ellie's husband Joe is involved too. Hence giving Tom the skateboard to scare him. She didn't seem to know that Ellie was a policeman. Wonder if it was after Tom told her that, that she decided to give him the skateboard but she was targetting him already because of the dad.

Why didn't Tom call out for his policewoman mum when he came in?

XBenedict · 09/04/2013 18:04

I still think the killer is Ellie's husband, reinforced this week by the reaction when he saw the skateboard but..............Cigarette butts were found by Danny's body weren't they? Susan smokes, does anyone else?
