The police are a bit crap. Not only did they not know about Jack's criminal record but they dont appear to have noticed that PQ has also been involved in something awful too.

I think the physic knows what happened but I think he knows because he was illegally listening on the telephone lines (he's a telephone engineer) and so couldn't own up to that without getting himself into trouble so he came up with the story of being a physic. What do you think?

Yes - taken into care and then fostered by the other mum, and given a new identity, because of the whole 'dad is a monster' thing. Although obviously he is the monster.
And PQ also got new identity, and has followed him to Broadchurch (She can't be local she hasn't got the generic West Country/rural accent all the other actors are just loving having a go at )
