Sports Personality of the Year, will you be voting?

Should be interesting. I will be voting for Wiggo because I like his dry sense of humour, he won the Tour de France, which is a major, huge feat (especially for a Brit) and his gentlemanly conduct on the 'Tack-gate' stage, the French love him, then he goes and takes gold at the olympics and he has encouraged many youngsters to get on their bikes. DH and I think there should be a male and female category though.

Has to be Bradley Wiggins - he's one sports person who actually makes the title of the award not seem like an oxymoron!

Have just bought the BBC Box set for DS for Xmas (good price 15.99 btw at Amazon here) but I don't know after tonight whether it will have the seal intact. I feel tonight will stir a few emotions and memories!

Pan · 16/12/2012 15:36

I have heard that the 'team award' may go to the Olympic 'Games Makers'. Which would be a bit odd. Are they nominated?

and Wiggo to win. Achievement AND personality.

Pan · 16/12/2012 15:39

It was fantastic wasn't it? Might feel some goose-bumps later.

gregssausageroll · 16/12/2012 15:39

I heard about the games makers winning team of the year also. Can't tell you when or where from though.

minsmum · 16/12/2012 15:43

I can't decide between Sarah Storey & David Weir still a little time to make up my mind though

MizK · 16/12/2012 15:46

Jessica Ennis for me.

Not a huge sports fan but she was fantastic at the olympics, and she's the sort of athlete that will inspire girls to take sport seriously because she's smily and seems lovely.

Plus she's utterly hot.

specialsubject · 16/12/2012 16:17

Ben Ainslie also has four golds at four Olympics (and a silver at a fifth) - he only has one chance each time as sailors only do one class. I'm off to correct the Wikipedia entry to put him up there with Bradley Wiggins.

TheOriginalLadyFT · 16/12/2012 16:34

Wiggins will win, whereas I would like to see Ennis win - not least because women so rarely win it and I get pretty tired of the endless male bias in sporting coverage

I'm very sad Charlotte Dujardin didn't get nominated, her team and individual gold medal in the dressage was a phenomenal achievement and done ethical using training and management methods unlike those widely used on the continent

TheOriginalLadyFT · 16/12/2012 16:35

Using ethical I meant doh!

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 16/12/2012 16:45

Oh yes to Jessica Ennis.
And Nicola Adams too. Both brilliant role models for girls.
Nicola was on that James Martin cooking show this morning, and she's got such a lovely smile and sunny personality.
And she is our first female Olympic boxer.

jammietart · 16/12/2012 17:17

Nicola Adams for me. First female Olympic boxing gold medalist. But agree Bradley Wiggins more than deserves it. And I think Ellie Simmonds is just fab. Very tough year!

LiveItUp · 16/12/2012 17:26

I will be voting for Wiggo as I think his winning the tour was a phenomenal achievement, and the olympics was the icing on the cake. I'd love it to be a female though - I was furious last year at the all male line-up, especially with amazing female athletes like Chrissie Wellington not even making the list. My female vote would go to Sarah Storey, I just think that what Wiggo achieved was far greater than any of the others. I won't be considering a vote for Andy Murray until he wins Wimbledon, but if he finally ever does, he'll be a shoe-in for that year.

greentea72 · 16/12/2012 17:34

What about Sarah storey, she has parolympic medals in two sports, competing in both distance and sprint for each, has something like 22 parolympic medals she only narrowly missed making the Olympic team because we have so many excellent cyclists. To my mind her achievements are far greater than any other contendent. Doubt she will get the votes though as she is not as well known.

slartybartfast · 16/12/2012 17:35

david weir or katherine granger

GW297 · 16/12/2012 17:37

Wiggo, but would also be happy if Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah or Ellie Simmons wins it!

Nicola Adams all the way- first female boxer to ever win Olympic gold, what a role model!

IndridCold · 16/12/2012 17:48

It is a really difficult choice this year, but I have to agree that Wiggo should win it. Not only did he win the tour de France and the Olympic TT gold, before all that he won three other big stage races, Paris Nice, Tour de Romandie and the Criterium de Dauphine - together they are the equivalent of another Tour de France!

AmIthatTinselly · 16/12/2012 17:53

Andy Murray for me. I love him and he is a lovely lad in RL. He does a lot of quiet work in tennis and has inspired many, many young people. He just doesn't brag about it.

But don't mind if he is runner up to Bradley Wiggins

Ben Ainslie would be a good choice, he has been consistently good for years and is incredibly easy on the eye and was picked by the others to carry the flag at the Olympic closing ceremony, so he is obviously highly thought of amongst his peers. And I did like his "don't make me angry" speech Xmas Grin

Oscar P for the overseas one, or David Rudisha, who is a very charming and humble man and I was in tears when he won his second gold.

As for the team, I would have gone for the Ryder Cup team, although as they aren't all British, I don't know if they would be eligible.

This has been such a fabulous year for sport, it really has and I think whoever wins will be worthy, unlike the random RG footballer winner a couple of years ago

Pan · 16/12/2012 18:01

What's Wiggo done that's so bad. I only read that he raised a middle finger to a bunch of journos ( prob the right thing to do in the circs) and suffered from alcoholism for a while. Which itself isn't damning.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 16/12/2012 18:09

How amazing would it be if Ellie Simmons won?
It ain't going to happen though. I'm not a fan of the programme, it's usually all about football, which I hate.
This year it's different, there are just too many to vote for.
I'm pretty sure Bradley will do it, his was an amazing achievement and like posters above have said, if it's also about personality, he should walk it.
I still have a sneaky love for Nicola Adams though, she just shines.
I want to adopt her.

Pan · 16/12/2012 18:15

It was good to read some comedian's obs. that those 45 mins of GB glory in the Olympic stadium was one in the eye for any sexist/zenophobe types, as it was earned by a black immigrant, a mixed race woman and a ginge.

foofooyeah · 16/12/2012 18:19

Jessica Ennis for me - she just has everything: breat sportswoman, female, multi disciplinary, seems to be a lovely girl, great role model for young girls.

Loads who could win it this year: its a tough one.
