For me it's always been Blackadder II which has just been repeated, but I wish they hadn't all been killed off at the end.

In general, III, because of Hugh Laurie and other supporting players.

But I also think Stephen Fry was amazing in IV, and Miriam Margolyes and Jim Broadbent in I and II. I watched the Lord and Lady Whiteadder episode with some very devout Christian relatives who didn't crack a smile throughout. Oh my aching sides [literally].

I am often heard to say 'So, Mrs Queen. It's nice to sit and talk of the laidy's things' to myself.

I am a massive fan and this is probably my fave exchange:

Baldrick: Well, my cousin Bert Baldrick, Mr. Gainsborough's butler's dogsbody, says that he's heard all portraits look the same these days, 'cause they're painted to a romantic ideal, rather than as a true depiction of the idiosyncratic facial qualities of the person in question.
[Blackadder and the Prince look astonished]
Blackadder: Your cousin Bert obviously has a larger vocabulary than you do.

Or the Spanish Infsnta episode: 'You are the true love of my life, my love my love.'

Incidentally, are the Blackadder fans here also Horrible Histories fans? I always felt that was like Blackadder meets Monty Python for kids. In 'The Borgia Family' song I always thought Mat Baynton was channelling theI Spanish Interpreter.

Blackadder slang has been part of my family for years and the night my DS was born we sat down together, mummy and son in the hospital, and I educated him on the ways of Blackadder by watching one of series 1. Then I sent my hubby mad texts because I hadn't slept for 3 days.

toysoldiers · 09/09/2012 00:26

I heart Horrible Histories.

Force DCs to watch it even though most of it is way beyond them. Even replay bits for DH later.

Mary I rendition of Babooshka spoof is legendary!

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 09/09/2012 00:37

After Blackadder, Horrible Histories is my fave programme (and DH's). Wasted on kids.

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 09/09/2012 00:38

Surely a Wuthering Heights spoof! But I agree - lOve her mad dancing.

toysoldiers · 09/09/2012 09:29

Yes of course Blush. That's what I meant Blush

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 09/09/2012 10:00

Sorry, in the cold light of day that sounded REALLY condescending of me! Very sorry, didn't mean it to at all!

I was sixteen when Blackadder II aired. Oh my hormones! I actually went to see Rowan Atkinson live and waited for him afterwards at the Stage Door - twice.
Once I presented him with a drawing and done and the other time I recorded him speaking on my walkman Blush

I got a video recorder just in time for Series II. I thought he was soooo sexy in those thigh boots and with that beard. WOOF!

II.

However the final scene of series IV is one of my best TV moments. I think it's the most I've ever cried at a TV program.

The program makers did the right thing, they didn't pull any punches about the likely fate of WW1 soldiers, it made me think of all the people who did die like that in the war and it was gut-wrenching. Truly great TV IMO.

I love Blackadder but am hopeless at remembering quotes, except for "cunning plan" style quotes. Every plan we have here is a cunning one.

Order of preference = 2,3,4,1. I was one of the few people I know who actually enjoyed series 1 - but even so it pales beside the other 3 series.
2 - because of Queenie, who I adored
3 - because of Hugh Laurie, who cracked me up
4 - well, it was excellent but less laughing and more tears.
1 - still had some top bits in it! And Brian Blessed who is fab.

TwiggysGoneOnHolidayByMistake · 09/09/2012 15:11

Another favourite - yes my Lord, he's hiding in the box!

MadameOvary · 09/09/2012 17:50

Edmund: Aah, and who is Jane?

Percy: I'm sworn to secrecy. Torture me, kill me, you shall never know. Ooh, ouch... Jane Herrington. We're very much in love, my lord.

Edmund: This is the Jane Herrington?

Percy: Yes.

Edmund: Jane - bury-me-in-a-Y-shaped-coffin - Herrington.

Percy: I.., I think maybe there are two Jane Herringtons.

Edmund: No... Tall, blond, elegant?

Percy: Right, that's right.

Edmund: Goes like a privy door when the plague is in town? Come on, get on with your shot. You'll get over her. ... [Percy aims]

Edmund: I did. ... [Percy aims again]

Edmund: So did Baldrick actually. [Percy's shot ends up way too low]

LeeCoakley · 09/09/2012 18:20

Seeing as how there are many fans here does anyone know what Queenie is saying when she is mocking Melchett about not wanting to go to the booze session? When you look at script sites they have a series of ?????? If anyone has the official scripts can you look it up for me? This has bugged me for years as I can't make out what's she's saying!
