Anyone watching the first episode of the second series tonight?

I love this programme. It's fascinating,if often heartbreaking. You see the best and the worst of people.

I hope the nurse is still in it.I can't remember her name, but she's fantastic, and was the main nurse featured in the first series.

ironind board woman...discuss!

Wingedharpy · 14/06/2012 03:20

Ironing board woman's partner had my blood boiling. I think it was a skillfull piece of telly editing though, cutting from shots of Mr and Ms Ironing board moaning about being kept waiting for hours for her minor injury to be attended to, and wittering about satisfaction surveys, then shots of the poorly elderly lady with a haemoglobin of 5.odd (no wonder she collapsed) and the young Nutscrushedbyabarge boy.
The joys of life in A and E though.
I predict Mr Ironing board will grow up and become a hospital manager!

I need to catch up on a few episodes. It does make me miss my A+E days.

Talking of ungrateful waiting room patients, we had a male patient in the minors area (nothing much wrong, minor laceration needing one or two sutures) come to the triage area about 6 times in the space of half an hour to demand how much longer. He was getting increasingly aggressive complaining about people getting seen before him including one that went from reception to resus. In the end one of our very senior sisters said "RIGHT, come with me" and took him round the corner into the resus room. There was the reception patient being treated for exacerbation of her COPD in the middle bay, a paediatric meningitis in the far end and somebody having CPR in the first bay. He mumbled his apologies and left.

Lesson: PLEASE BE PATIENT ;) theres always someone else far worst off and although we might look like we aren't working, we are elsewhere.

Hope the ironingboard couple were watching themselves and feeling mortified.

ripsishere · 14/06/2012 22:14

And the silly bint and her transitioning friend. 'oooh aren't we hardcore going out clubbing on a Sunday night pair'.
I did a couple of agency shifts in our local A+E. I dont have the patience for it.

cocolepew · 14/06/2012 22:23

Wasn't Jean beautiful? I'm sure she was a looker when she was young.

chocolatespiders · 14/06/2012 22:28

Does anyone know why episode 3 is not available on Channel 4 watch again thing?

Sorry if this has been discussed further down

I've had two experiences in A & E ( Kings as it happens ) with ladies in their 90's and both were appalling .

Mother into A &E sat night ,fractured neck of femur tho not diagnosed until 8 hours later .

Mother in too much pain to access trolley ,left in wheelchair ,given paracetomal .
Wet herself twice ( pressure sore by time got onto ward ) , response to my concern expressed 4 hours later to staff about her pain " We're getting to her ,we're getting to her " .
My worry about mother getting dehydrated dismissed .

Three failed trips to Xray ,7 hours after admission ,returned because the paracetomal left her in too great pain for x ray staff to move her .

Snippy remarks from A & E staff about X ray staff .
Three doses of morphine ( given 7 hours after we'd arrived ) before x ray accomplished .

No kindness from A & E staff .

And I won't go in to the other case too much but it involved delightful care like standing at the end of the trolley and yelling through the normal questions of " Do you know where you are ? / What year is it " to barely conscious 96 year old . Who died later .

All dreadful .

So being patient not always correct advice IME .

It's hard, on the one hand I have every sympathy for the staff having to deal with twits like the ironing board girl, whilst dealing with proper emergencies - those time wasters ought to be charged....BUT

My mum had a fall this week, went to A&E and had to wait 5 hours before being treated - she had a bad head wound which needed stitches, and was then offered the night on a trolley or to go home. Her carer who accompanied her was jumping up and down saying there was more to it than just a fall but was ignored and my mum went home. I live 3 hours away and went up that night to be with her, and when she woke in the morning I felt her speech was much worse so rang the GP who advised a CT scan - we went to the AMU and waited another 5 hours and my mum was then admitted as they felt she may have had another stroke......which was confirmed by the scan.

Who knows what the effects of that delay could be - this is her 3rd stroke - and I'm very angry that they only treated what they saw and ignored her carer who is an experienced nurse, telling her the wound wasn't too bad, and she didn't need any further treatment.

swooosh · 17/06/2012 15:02

I'm not saying be patient where it's obvious you're/loved one is in a bad way. it's the twats they call an ambulance for a stubbed toe when they can SEE the hospital from their house and walk in full weight bearing and demand a trolley to lie on. YES this happens more frequently then you can imagine.

Love the kid in the hat.

It's so sad to see the failed resusciation attempts. The staff do all they can,but unfortunately it's unlikely to work.
