Sparklingbrook The 1cm an hour dilation 'rule' was brought in as it is the optimum speed at which a woman should labour to be processed efficiently through the labour ward (AIMS booklet I think I got this from). Women had babies for thousands and thousands of years without MWs needing to do VEs to see how dilation was going.

They can tell how dilated you are from how you act - transition behaviour is apparently quite obvious, and there is also some sort of red 'line' that comes up from the bum. Another reason to get women off their backs!

I was as out of it on G&A as Jess is on pethidine. I think it can be a protection mechanism sometimes Sad.
