You cant possibly tell from that 1 hr show what sort of lives those parents have off camera.

You're just making judgements because she is 1. young 2. unmarried 3. probably not v well educated.

All of those things dont mean she will be a shit parent or that she has had a shit upbringing.

bytheMoonlight · 02/02/2012 16:33

This may have been said already but just because Jess is doing a DNA test doesn't mean that she has slept with two men.

It could mean nathanial has doubts and she is doing the DNA test to prove him wrong because she knows the outcome already ie she only slept with him so he must be the dad.

Don't jump to conclusions just because she is young.

Shame we won't ever know the results though

emmanana · 02/02/2012 16:34

Most new mums have a parenting style similar to their own Mums. The young mums own mother seemed very caring to me.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere -complelty agree re. the VE. They are worse than any contraction IME.

My babies were also high (didn't descend at all during my first labour resulting in ems and then forceps with dd2) so maybe that's a factor.

I had 3 VE by 3 different people in less than 5 mins during my first labour and I thought I had no choice, it was like a torture chamber, to determine if baby was descending

During my 2nd I refused a VE by a the surgeon who wanted to do a fetal blood test, his hands were MASSIVE! I was talked around in the end by the top midwife.

VE's are a big part of why I will not be choosing a VBAC if there is a dc3 but will be opting for a cs.

emmanana · 02/02/2012 16:41

A friend of mine is from Bangladesh and has very dark skin, and silky soft hair. Her DH is half afro-carribean/caucasion scottish, with fairly dark skin, and afro texture hair. Their 1st DS was born with blue eyes , pale skin and red, silky hair.
The number of times his mum would be asked if she was a nanny/cm
He is now 14 and is so handsome. His skin looks healthy tanned and his hair is thick, wavy naturally highlighted blonde - looks like he's been hanging out on a beach.

Archemedes · 02/02/2012 17:08

The baby turned out not to be his apparently. judging by a post on the fb page.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/02/2012 17:17

I dont think we can put too much store in posts on facebook either.

cackinghell (isnt that an obscenity btw?) she didnt swear very much. And she was in labour the whole time she was being filmed. Apart from the pre labour interviews and she didnt swear during those and was talking in very sensible and touching terms about what she wanted for her child.

She had a lot of insight into the issues she would be facing as a young single mother.

What is with the loaded passive agressive 'at least two possibilities'? The DNA test ONLY proves that the father in the programme doubted paternity - nothing else.

If he was proved not to be the father it doesnt indicate that the young woman slept with more than two men. It can only prove she slept with two.

Your posts are so heavily laden with your own value judgements I am suprised they dont drop off the page under the weight of them.

Nicely put Mrs DV.

Raahh · 02/02/2012 19:16

The VE debate brings back memories of the lovely Joy in series one-the way she told her husband, with some disgust, that the midwife put her WHOLE HAND in, really made me giggle. I loved Joy and her husband. There is less humour in the show than originally, I think. (I didn't see most of the last series). I miss the old school midwives and the biscuit-munching receptionist.

Raahh · 02/02/2012 19:17

(I know it isn't meant to be a comedy, but a bit of light relief amidst the anxiety of the births was nice)Grin

BertieBotts · 02/02/2012 19:18

I thought she came across well. I liked her. A product of her environment, sure, but she seemed to know her own mind (when she wasn't drugged out of it) and she identified her weakness ie that she needed to work on her patience, well, don't we all? I thought it was mature of her to admit that.

She came across a lot more sorted and looked more able to cope than a lot of the young mums on the programme do.

RubyLovesMayMay · 02/02/2012 20:05

You ladies always seem to say what I'm thinking, but always put it better than I would Smile

amandine07 · 02/02/2012 22:04

Daily Mail have made a big thing of it, poor girl...
www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2095515/One-Born-Every-Minute-causes-outrage-17-year-old-labour-reveals-smoking-pregnant.html

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/02/2012 22:06

I dont even want to look.
Picking on a 17 year old girl? Nice.

BertieBotts · 03/02/2012 00:16

Article is stupid. It's picking up on her one comment of "Aren't you going out for a cig?" "No, not allowed" - she never once mentioned craving cigarettes or wishing she could go out for one, so no indication she did even smoke - it's the Daily Mail picking up on nothing at all to run a story with as usual.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 03/02/2012 07:15

I stumbled at story yesterday (occassionally I read the daily fail- not sure why... Blush) and ended up ranting to my DP at how unfair it was to pick on this girl.

It really bloody is Angry It's almost like they couldn't contain their glee: "Oooh look we have a teenage mum, who smokes lives on benefits no doubt (the poor old taxpayer is footing the bil, yet again) who doesn't know who the father of her illigitimate child is.

Must have been like all their christmases had come at once...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2012 07:26

I wish I had FB, I would send a comment about the smoking. I was 37 when I had DD, I smoked all through my pregnancy. She is fine.
Bring on the haterz telling me how selfish I am.
I think Jess will be fine, she has a supportive mother and a fair amount of insight into how difficult it will be.

BertieBotts · 03/02/2012 10:06

I commented on the stupid article - didn't get approved, though. Might be because I insulted the journalist...

Badday, I'm not sure that there's anything wrong in "treating the young ones differently". A good, caring midwife might mean by that "I take extra care to ensure that they understand exactly what is happening and that they are well supported". Good care doesn't mean treating everyone the same - it means recognising that different groups of people may have different needs, expectations and experiences and tailoring your own behaviour/working practices accordingly.

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 04/02/2012 00:02

I agree with 'it means recognising that different groups of people may have different needs, expectations and experiences and tailoring your own behaviour/working practices accordingly.'
But I do not agree they should be placed in a particular box because of their age alone. Young people can often be viewed as very 'needy' and in busy materniy units where staff are exhausted, it can be easier to heavily sedate the loudest and most 'needy' women, rather than give them actual support and tools for them to deal with the pain. Much like what appears to have happened with poor Jess.

Archemedes · 04/02/2012 18:42

Jess never actually said she smoked, someone asked if she was allowed out for a fag 2 different things.

wonderingwendy · 04/02/2012 18:52

i just kept thinking the young girls bra looked empty but then mine does this when i lay down !!
