I thought it might be an idea to start a new thread for The Reichenbach Fall since The Hounds got its thread up to over 200 pages since last Sunday!

Non-spoilery vague preview description: "Sherlock and John lock horns with their old enemy in one final problem that tests loyalty and courage to their very limits. Sherlock must fight for his reputation, his sanity and his life. But is he all he claims to be?"

BBC link for The Reichenbach Fall

Yes, very funny that he should tell Watson to keep looking directly at him.

I have also wondered about when he was questioning Watson in Baker Street, about whether or not that seed of doubt had planted itself in Watson's head. He said something similar to Molly, about not being all she thought he was.

The whole episode has lots of references to him being a fraud, being Moriarty, Moriarty being him, seeds of doubt, the truth, fairytales etc.

TheRhubarb · 19/01/2012 13:55

Snowie Grin

He DID say elementary in the books but never paired it with "my dear Watson."

Oh you know, I've got work to do and everything! Stop posting for crying at loud, at least till I've finished my work!

SnowieBear · 19/01/2012 14:00

OK - off we mutually trot.

I couldn't get my quote wrong with you about, Rhubarb!

The cameo at the Diogenes Club was Douglas Wilmer; Mr Gatiss tweeted about it just after The Fall.

I would NEVER have recognised him!

Shit! Work!

givemushypeasachance · 19/01/2012 14:17

I didn't have the foggiest despite keeping my eyes peeled through the ep!

On a random note, The Guardian Notes and Queries had this today: "Sherlock or Doctor Who ? who would win in a chess match?"

Did we ever see Sherlock playing chess in the original books? He obviously doesn't get on with Cludo in the BBC version... Grin I think there is a chess set lying around in 221B though.

I definitely remember Tom Baker losing at chess to K9!

The Rhubarb I agree with the marked pavement. The 'body' was right next to where the markings was, ie it was probably thrown out of the truck instantly after Sherlock landed in the truck.

Has anyone else noticed that when Watson ran out of Baker St to get a cab back to the hospital across the street there is a grafitti I O U ? If you look on iplayer its at 1.12.20 .

moonmother · 19/01/2012 14:24

There was also a small building between where Watson was standing and where Holmes landed, so his view was obscured and Holmes always insisted he kept his eyes on him.

TheRhubarb · 19/01/2012 14:27

Holmes mentioned chess once, in one of the stories which the chess people like going on about, but there is no mention of a chess set in Baker Street or him playing the game. He preferred chemistry and his violin.

Ah I am now a very happy girl. I've just discovered that there was a Sherlock Holmes story set in the world of horse racing - Silver Blaze.
As I work in the racing industry and live in a town with an awful lot of racehorses (around 2,500 of the lovely beasts) I will now, I am sure, content myself with the thought that if they decide to make an update of that story they might film it here [sigh] Wink

TheRhubarb · 19/01/2012 14:53

Bloody good story that was.

Gregory "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

Brilliant!

Panfriedstardust · 19/01/2012 14:59

Funniest line in Fall, at graveside
Watson - I am angry with him.
Mrs Hudson - so am I what with ......cue list of complaints
Watson - ok, I'm not that angry.

CaveMum · 19/01/2012 15:03

Glad to hear it Rhubarb, our resident Holmes expert Grin.

All we need to do is start a campaign that they should use the story in Series 3. Then I can offer my services as racing consultant to the show [wishful thinking] Wink

[runs off to start a petition]

SnowieBear · 19/01/2012 15:05

Disagree with funniest line in "Fall", although the scene at the graveside is great... for me it has to be in the taxi on their way to Moriarty's trial:

Holmes - I'll just be myself then.
Watson - Are you listening to me?

I whooped in delight Smile.

SnowieBear · 19/01/2012 15:06

I note with glee both Rhubarb and I are still here, despite having said work needed to take place, etc...

Lexilicious · 19/01/2012 15:11

Rhubarb and any other Superfans, I've just put this in my amazon basket (along with the series 1 DVD). Will it service all my original ACD short story/novel background research needs or is there another edition/set which would be better?

AgathaHeyer · 19/01/2012 15:12

Hi I am new to Mumsnet and Sherlock (I know- what have I been doing with my life?) and am liking both a lot. Also v much liking Rhubarb's theories.

As for who would win a chess match between SH and Dr W- the answer is in the question. (I like to think Sherlock would have said that....(not!)

Lexilicious · 19/01/2012 15:19

and/or what about the Complete, the Return, the Penguin complete, or the best of??? Smile

TheRhubarb · 19/01/2012 15:50

Lex - those two volumes are the first two and will take you up to The Final Problem which I think is probably enough to be getting on with. When you've finished and are craving more, then get The Return, The Memoirs and The Casebook.
Actually I would also consider the four novels if you like the short stories. They are different as everyone has said, but they are good stories in themselves and the fact that Holmes is there is an added bonus.

So just after you've read the volumes you've bought, get yourself a very good hardback copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Then get A Study in Scarlet just so you can discover how they met - reading this first might be hard work.
Then you can get the other short stories and the then the last two novels.

Agatha - welcome! Smile
I think Holmes would get impatient with Doctor Who as he gabbles far too much and Holmes prefer quiet, contemplative thought. He can also guess what his opponent's next move will be whereas the Doctor doesn't tend to be as observant. So Holmes would win. Naturally!

Furball · 19/01/2012 16:56

Another thing about the actual fall - we watch him all the way down at this angle = I and when he lands on the pavement he lands this way = -- so his body lands 90 degrees different to how he was falling

diddl · 19/01/2012 17:31

"have seen the video set to Katy Perry's song ET with various clips of the lush Mr Cumberbatch"

Nooooo!

What?

Where?

ladygee · 19/01/2012 18:01

diddl

Loving this Sherlock thread and all the theories. Hats off to rhubarb!

But - thanks to cavemum and others - it has fuelled my Cumberbatch crush and taken it to a whole new, and very inappropriate, level. I fear there's no going back.

diddl · 19/01/2012 18:09

Have just found

OMG, the wink!

LetUsPrey · 19/01/2012 18:29

Ah yes, diddl, the wink Wink!

I watched that one last night. Favourite bit? Where he's thwacking the riding crop. I very nearly fell off my chair!

And the finger wiggle in the middle of the ET video. I have a bit of a thing for hands and - my word - he has beautiful hands.

Now I need to pay attention to DS2. Blush

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/01/2012 19:28

TheRhubarb, 'It's more likely that she shared the video with someone who then put it online without her permission.'
I'll stick with believing the statement (which I can't find online now) that a friend of hers posted, saying that someone had hacked into an account of hers and sent the video public.

'But in any case, it's hardly a damaging clip.' It's up to her to decide what she thinks is damaging and how mortified she feels about it, no?

'And can't she ask YouTube to take the videos down?' Well, of course she did, not long after it exploded on Twitter. Most links to the clip now lead to a 'this video is no longer available' type message. The fact remains that she was embarrassed and upset by it. I'm sure she would be much happier if versions of it weren't still going round in public.
