Whoever thought up the series, I bet they dated it in 1973 for this exact reason - guaranteed to have their target audience of 30-somethings weeping into their sofas with nostalgia...

My mum had the picture Sam's mum did of the Cornish harbour (Polperro ?) .... which I'd forgotten about until seeing it again. Very weird.

Here's some gossip for you: I went out with one of the writers of this series when we were both at the same university in the (late) 70's

What else has his "mum" been in - watching it on teleplus replay and it's bugging me. No help from IMDB.

I think hes in a coma which is why he can sometimes hear voices & beeping of hospital machines.

Well it starts off with him listening to Life on Mars which goes:-
