ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 21/09/2011 08:44

I've never seen Rita, Sue and Bob too but I have a friend who was left out of a menage a trois with that group of people.

Summerbird73 · 21/09/2011 09:12

cerealqueen twas meeeee check out my links earlier. Grin

harrietthespook · 21/09/2011 10:12

I can't see them bumping Matthew off either - unless the actor who plays him has better offers elsewhere...

For sure that newspaper guy is there to ward off the evils of the story that's about to emerge in the press on Mary.

Diddl your posts make me laugh. I can't quite see how you don't get that Edith and Mary are both as bad as each other. To each his own I guess.

Personally - I would LOVE to see both Lavinia and Mary chucked aside and Sybil make a late dash. But I think I've said that before - she probably has better things to do elsewhere anyway. J'aime Sybil though. I hope she gets a good chance to show her stuff as a nurse.

diddl · 21/09/2011 11:11

"For sure that newspaper guy is there to ward off the evils of the story that's about to emerge in the press on Mary."

I wondered if he might be there to get the "inside scoop".

"I can't quite see how you don't get that Edith and Mary are both as bad as each other."

I do see that they are as bad as each other-I just have sympathy for Edith.

Quenelle · 21/09/2011 14:17

I absolutely love DA. It's such a treat.

I've got a bad feeling about William though...

Not read the whole thread, has someone already said that?

missmogwi · 21/09/2011 14:22

It's a running theme Grin

Ah. Not so perceptive then...

Summerbird73 · 21/09/2011 14:32

quenelle you will be commenting on O'Brien being in Rita Sue and Bob Too next Wink

but yes - we are all v concerned about William Sad

Summerbird73 · 21/09/2011 14:34

incidentally OP - i meant to ask ages ago - how much internet CAN you use before it is full? Grin Wink

and if you type 'google' into Google do you break the internet??

limitedperiodonly · 21/09/2011 14:46

I'm worried for William too. He looks like a victim Sad

I read today that there's been uproar over the numerous ad breaks, particularly the ones for Aviva.

What's wrong with people? I like the Aviva ads. I sky plussed then wound back to follow the story of the bloke who'd come off his motorbike. It's moving and uplifting.

Enhances my viewing pleasure no end.

AKMD · 21/09/2011 14:52

I loved the first episode but I wish I'd been strong enough to wait until November for the box set. I HATE having to wait a week!

I will be very upset if Matthew doesn't end up marrying Mary. There's no way he can honourably break off his engagement to Lavinia now but I think she will be shown to be a right wrong'un and do something to take herself out of the picture.

William will die :( He's far too nice to get Daisy pregnant out of wedlock so that won't happen. Diasy knows that Thomas is awful so I don't see her marrying him.

I really don't like Cora. Of all of them, I think she's the most stuck-up and mean. Otherwise why would she have Miss O'Brien as her personal maid, even knowing that she's a right caaah?

I don't really care about Bates, sorry. People who have 'mug' written all over their faces irritate me and I'm sure he was a beast to his wife. I do feel sorry for Anna though.

I like the chauffeur but he reminds me too much of the fascist chauffeur in Upstairs, Downstairs. Too much rebel stuff going on.

missmogwi · 21/09/2011 15:01

Well, she was getting cats bum mouthed about Dsis using wireless connection. She was waiting until Dsis had finished until going on line. Why? I don't know. "she's using it all, it will be full"

Is was the same with text messages. Ringing me "missmogwi, there's an envelope on this, what's a bloody envelope mean" Grin

MamaMary · 21/09/2011 15:17

AKMD, I dislike Cora but I think that's because the woman playing her is a dreadful actress. She appears to have one facial expression (wide eyed) and says all her lines with exactly the same intonation. Anyone else? She irritates the life out of me.

Also not liking the new meek Mary - preferred the feisty one!

It's all a bit dramatic isn't it but it'll probably calm down a bit - the first episode has to cover a lot I suppose.

diddl · 21/09/2011 15:22

I´m not keen on Cora-although Violet as a MIL must be trying!

I know it´s done for dramatic/comedic effect, but considering her class, I sometimes find Violet too ill mannered.

MamaMary · 21/09/2011 15:24

Yes, some of Maggie Smith's lines are OTT, but very funny.

chill1243 · 21/09/2011 15:54

I have tried to avoid it. But you cannot avoid the publicity surrounding it.

I am sure it is bril in its way; but not for me at this stage of my life. I gather they are fitting the 1st world war into this series.

GenevieveHawkings · 21/09/2011 16:13

Watched the first series on DVD. It was fantastic without the adverts and those soppy "so and so sponsors ITV Drama" things.

I love Downton Abbey but I really wish it was on the BBC.

AKMD · 21/09/2011 16:18

Genenvieve I try to remember that without the adverts, there would be no Downton Abbey. That's not to say that I don't hate them coming on every 10 minutes too though!

ScatterChasse · 21/09/2011 16:40

I'm still lost as to whether Edith or Sybil's younger. Last series I thought it was Edith, but now I'm not sure.

I like Cora actually although she does have some odd facial expressions, I think she's written very well, and I love how much in love they seem to be (fingers resolutely in ears about any mention of an affair, he's lovely and I will refuse to believe it.).

And 'Anna' was in the Royle Family Christmas special, if we're still playing spot the actor/actress.

limitedperiodonly · 21/09/2011 16:42

AKMD I was trying to work out what you meant by the fascist chauffeur from Upstairs, Downstairs and then I realised you meant the recent version, not the original with that nice John Alderton from Please Sir! as the chauffeur.

I'm old enough to remember not only the original but when it was in black and white.

Upstairs, Downstairs had John Alderton's character marrying the spirited housemaid Sarah. Ethel's got a touch of Sarah about her. Perhaps she should marry the Irish chauffeur and he should stop pining for Lady Sybil (forgotten his name).

Is 'chauffeur' ok to use or is it common and Frenchified? Would they have used 'driver' instead.

GeorginaWorsley · 21/09/2011 18:19

Perhaps Lavinia will die in the 1918 flu epidemic, like Hazel Bellamy did in the original Upstairs, leaving Matthew to marry Mary?
Of course,am an expert on the original UpDown Wink

PublicHair · 21/09/2011 18:21

i am related, closely, to someone in this programme. i don't watch it though!

limitedperiodonly · 21/09/2011 18:46

Good point about the flu, GeorginaWorsley. BTW were you the one with the googly eyes, as my mum used to describe them every time the actress came on screen?

I'm sure you have lovely eyes in real life. Not a bit like Marty Feldman's.
