Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

Ooh, I just googled it to try to answer my own question, and it does seem you can pay to sign up to various services which will allow you to access ITV player, BBC player, etc, from outside the UK (not sure if you have to be in the UK to set it up though, IYSWIM)...

diddl · 10/10/2011 19:51

It´s very disjointed, isn´t it-especially condidering that there´s a series three?

And three years have passed since Matthew left & they´re all stil treating Mary like a girlfriend?

bonfirequeen · 10/10/2011 20:22

Cheerful Yank my friend in San Francisco has iplayer somehow so it must be doable.

zebrafinch · 10/10/2011 20:58

Based on real history of my "aunty" a work friend of my mothers (now . deceased). William will be killed. Aunt had two brothers who did not volunteer straight away, they were shown the white feather by local girls, were called up and were both killed within six months. Housekeeper will somehow keep pregnant maid on and Anna will walk into their shared bedroom unexpectedly and find her haemorrhaging after shoving a piece of metal up herself to terminate the pregnancy.

ScatterChasse · 10/10/2011 21:11

I wondered why they'd wake Cora rather than the Earl. I think it must be 'servants' rather than family, because the mistress is in overall charge of the servants. Surely they wouldn't wake her because a servant was in labour though? Waking Sybil, possible I suppose, but Cora couldn't do much, could she?

I'm afraid she's probably a bit past it to pretend she'd had a baby.

I don't want Pickles to be a romantic hero. I quite liked him last series, now I've decided he has shifty eyes.

Biscuitsandtea · 10/10/2011 21:16

I wondered if they woke Cora at the same time as mrs bates was there threatening to spill the beans about Pamuk?

She was pg last series so surely could pass off a 'surprise' baby? Don't know which paper Sir Richard does but if it was the NOTW they'd love a story like that Wink

AKMD · 10/10/2011 21:23

I really, really don't want Sybil to run off with Branston. He is obviously trouble and she doesn't even seem to like him that much! No idea where all the wistful scenes last night came from...

I cried when Matthew walked in - WHY didn't Mary go and jump on him?! These two are killing me.

I am also a bit confused - lots of talk about a 'Christmas special' but I didn't think it ran for that long? I need M&M to get married sometime in the next few weeks or I think I am going to explode.

AKMD · 10/10/2011 21:24

I bet the officer that got Ethel pregnant gets kicked out. No idea what will happen to Ethel :(

limitedperiodonly · 10/10/2011 21:35

pentagram you're not derailing, just sending it up a side junction:

So: railway-themed misogynistic arses are Dr Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard) from Brief Encounter and Major Eric Fincham from Von Ryan's Express (Trevor Howard).

Non-railway themed more general gits are Father Collins from Ryan's Daughter ( Trevor Howard) and Aggressive Man In Restaurant in The Great Muppet Caper (Trevor Howard).

I rest my case.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 10/10/2011 21:47

thomas isnt bossing the staff around downstairs, most of them avoid him/ treat him with contempt...he bossed daisy telling her to bring him a hot cup of tea, mostly to pay her back for grassing him up

then he got reported to soldier doctor scottish bossyboots.

thomas runs the medical service only - the hospital. he is exempt from the household so he doesnt have to obey carson

ThePsychicSatsuma · 10/10/2011 21:48

and there is nothing wrong with Edward Cullen. Leave him out of this.

harrietthespook · 10/10/2011 22:41

aren't they gonna wake both cora and Lord G? I reckon it will be VERA brandishing something.

BTW - apropos of nothing Made in Chelsea is pissing me off tonight. Trying to work out which one looks most like a descendant of Sir Richard and Lady Mary.

PastGrace · 10/10/2011 22:57

Cheerful Yank isthis any good for you?

I used it when I was abroad in Paris. letmewatchthis is generally good as well, but seems to have let itself down with Downton.

CheerfulYank · 10/10/2011 23:15

ALLEGEDLY I will HYPOTHETICALLY check it out. Wink

PastGrace · 10/10/2011 23:32

Wink. I never used it for BBC because I felt bad about the tv licence, just for things where I felt like the adverts have more than paid for it. And in this series of Downton there are basically more minutes of adverts than there are screen time.

Obviously my recommendation was nothing more than a tongue in cheek suggestion, and you will not be taking it as any more than a flippant comment.

CheerfulYank · 10/10/2011 23:44

Of course not! And in any case, even if some ruffian comes in and forces me to watch it in such a manner Wink, I would still be buying the box set. So...

kipperandtiger · 11/10/2011 03:13

If you miss a bit, it can be viewed on ITV Player (as long as you're in the UK)
www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=279294

kipperandtiger · 11/10/2011 03:18

ITVPlayer and BBC iPlayer can only be viewed by tv licence payers - ie you have to be in the UK. Watching a few snippets on youtube is the only thing I can suggest. Sorry Cheerful Yank. Bad luck. Get someone to send you a bootleg recording off the telly if the DVD isn't out in time?

CheerfulYank · 11/10/2011 03:20

No, 'cause the DVDs aren't the same. I was going to order the box set from Amazon UK and then try to switch the region or whatever on my laptop, but it seemed like a lot to pay if they didn't work.

kipperandtiger · 11/10/2011 03:26

Bootleg sounds most reliable then.....you'd think that if they can invent the iPhone and Facebook they should be able to work out how to let us watch stuff like this overseas for a small subscription or something. Is there any ITV channel on US cable or anything? At all? My sympathies.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 11/10/2011 08:03

I'm getting really pissed off with this now. There seems to be no sense of time, years pass in a single episode, the heir apparent gets away days from France at the drop of a hat and Thomas is remains a bossy boots.
Branson did have a point with regard to nursey girl, she doesn't do much in the way of real nursing. Although he is a git and a cad. I am astonished he is still employed, the driving daughter could take over his duties and be trusted not to throw a load of mud over dining guests.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 11/10/2011 08:11

AKMD - but it was never the chap's fault - always the girl's. Just look at Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

Also - I've been predicting that servant girl would get herself into trouble since she first saw that ugly ass Major with the dodgy 'tash.

Oh, and to go waaaaayyyy back to the beginning of the thread I think someone ought to start making adaptations of the Georgette Heyer novels - like Jane Austen, but with more bodice ripping. Huzzah!

Biscuitsandtea · 11/10/2011 08:22

rips, I'm finding the timings weird too. In Downton-time they'd managed to 'plan' a concert for the soldiers, but in war-time, Matthew had been stuck behind enemy lines for 3 days and then found the field hospital and been sent home. But the last episode was the previous year.....

I'm flummoxed!

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 11/10/2011 09:12

Glad it isn't me then.
Even DD commented that Pickles wouldn't still be employed. Apart from being a loose cannon he caused an awful kerfuffle in the dining room which no body commented on.
Also, what does he do? Drives somebody somewhere once a month and spends the rest of his time playing with the big end or polishing his head lamps.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 11/10/2011 09:42

From what I understand cars needed a lot more maintenance then than they do now and a chaufeeur was more like an in-house mechanic, plus they were still caught up in the 'groom' mentality and thought they needed someone full time to .... feed the car hay? :D
