Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

YY Maggie Smith knows all about Pamuk as one of her gossipy friends wrote to her (i remember her saying to Cora how she cant imagine Mary dragging the body herself - to which Cora admits her involvement). Maggie Smith eventually relents and says that it was for the best that they got Pamuk out of Mary's room etc etc

Thomas indeed nicked the snuffbox but he also nicked some wine and tried to drop Bates in it, Carson and Mrs Scottish Housekeeper (name?) bollocked him for it and i think Lord G was in on it too.... that was when they were about to sack him when he signed up for the Medical Corps.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 09:27

didnt a few people peep through a door at the corpse removal? wasnt daisy part of it all too? didnt obrien peep?

Biscuitsandtea · 04/10/2011 09:33

Ah thank you - I do wish they'd done a recap at the start of series 2! How can they expect me to remember so much - I've been to sleep since then!

While we're recapping, am I right in thinking aunt rosamund / rosalind or whatever she's called (Lord G's sis) put Mary off from accepting Matthew? Mary kind of wanted to, (i think?) but why did Rosawhatsit put her off?

Summerbird73 · 04/10/2011 09:50

I remember Miss Moneypenny putting Mary off marrying Matthew at the garden party, i think it was because he was a lowly solicitor and she could do better for herself etc etc (although he was set to inherit Downton Confused )

Daisy was peeping through the door at the Pamuk incident, OBrien was sure something was up, OBrien arranged it for Daisy to tell Edith whilst eavesdropping and subsequently Edith wrote to the Turkish Ambassador. (i think all that was right?)

AnyoneButLulu · 04/10/2011 11:42

Rosamund counselled Mary against accepting Matthew because Cora was pg at the time, so Matthew was Schroedinger's Heir, he might or might not inherit, and might be just a solicitor after all (and frankly Mary is not cut out for suburban living).

diddl · 04/10/2011 11:45

Doesn´t anyone else feel sorry for Isobel?

Doing the work & Lady G wanting/getting the glory?

She´s Lady G-I doubt anyone will forget it´s her bloody house!

I think it would be great if Matthew & Edith ended up together.

Hoping that Mary blotted her copybook by trying to dig something up about Lavinia.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 12:43

but diddl, mary did the decent thing and did not reveal lavinia's shortcomings to matthew...

think I got confused in this ep, but didnt lavinia state she was someones lover;
then later say she was never anyones lover...?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 12:44

maybe its mary's kindness at having her friends track down bates that will blot her copybook, if said friends run into O Brien...or any of the corpse-witnesses

anonacfr · 04/10/2011 12:45

No. Isobel's too self-righteous for words. Besides I don't get how it is her job anyway- I thought the Major was in charge the hospital and Thomas was in charge of Downton?

Anyway it appears that Edith has quietly been doing most of the work not just being there for the patient but actually doing things for them. So has Sybil.

Edith was great this episode. I'm warming to Mary- I think she's truly grown up and is really in love with Matthew otherwise she would have told him all the rumours about Lavinia. I really hope they end up together.

harrietthespook · 04/10/2011 12:50

There's nothing to suggest from anything Mary did in this episode or the ones before that she is setting out to undermine Lavinia. Out of character, perhaps, but still there's just no evidence of it.

diddl · 04/10/2011 12:56

True, it does seem to be Violet & Rosamund.

Was what Lavinia did so awful-exposing insider trading?

I suppose it would have been better if it had been exposed for the sake of it rather than to get her father out of debt.

Perhaps also Mary does like Lavinia & would rather "get" Matthew by fair means!

Also as she said, would he propose again?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 13:00

errr, I think mary's feelings for matthew have cooled somewhat.
he will get injured>>return home>> lav won't have him>> mary will nurse him

diddl · 04/10/2011 13:12

"I think mary's feelings for matthew have cooled somewhat."

I can´t help wondering if she loves him or only thinks she does, or wants him to love her...

Biscuitsandtea · 04/10/2011 13:19

Or maybe loves him partly because he's not chasing her anymore? Bit shocked when he seemed to have moved on so quickly?

AKMD · 04/10/2011 13:34

YY mort I am also a bit confused by Lord G not falling over himself at the opportunity to do something meaningful for the war. Also by him agreeing to have Thomas back, knowing what he is like.

I think Evelyn Napier (still engaged, not married yet surely?) will come back and Mary will throw herself at him.

Lavinia is still a bad'un. Why would Sir R want to blackmail her in the first place? Who cares if she nicked some papers from her uncle. There has to be more to the story than she is telling.

William = dead. Matthew = presumed dead. He'll turn up just in time to stop Mary from marrying Evelyn Napier or Sir R. I think Sir R might end up marrying Lavinia.

Ethel is clearly going to get herself into trouble with that officer. Sex scene accounted for maybe?

I think Lord G is losing his marbles and will die this series.

AKMD · 04/10/2011 13:34

I do feel sorry for Daisy. Poor girl!

ImpYCelyn · 04/10/2011 13:59

I can't believe the cook is basically going to force her to marry William, it's hideous!

I'm still waiting for Edith to get her comeuppance. She kissed a married man fgs and nothing happened. I'm sure she's got a hard lesson to learn sometime soon.

AKMD · 04/10/2011 14:03

Just looked on Wikpedia (saddo) and Amy Nuttal (Ethel) isn't in the next series. So that's her knocked up then.

diddl · 04/10/2011 14:13

"I'm still waiting for Edith to get her comeuppance."

If anything I would have thought that it would be the farmer who would get into trouble, not her.

harrietthespook · 04/10/2011 14:26

Now, diddl....if Mary had done the same...Wink

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 14:29

AMKD how can they have already signed for series 3?

ImpYCelyn · 04/10/2011 14:29

I suspect he probably did get into a lot of trouble with his wife. But yes, if it was known about by others I think he'd be in serious trouble, especially if he's a tenant farmer.

But I still think she ought to know better than to kiss a married man and, given the period, to kiss a man at all that she wasn't engaged to at least.

I'm sure Mary's going to suffer further for Pamuk, I can't see how Edith has got away with it.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 04/10/2011 14:29

AKMD

AKMD · 04/10/2011 14:44

It's alright, there's a new poster AMML, so it gets a bit confusing even without typos :)

There have been a few artciles saying that two women in this series will not be in the next one. series 3 was confirmed earlier this year.

I'm not surprised there was no comeback from the farmer's wife. Back in the day, it could well have been them kicked off the farm and losing their livelihood for daring to cause trouble with the landowner's daughter. The note to say they had found someone was the best way she had of expressing disapproval without serious repercussions.

AKMD · 04/10/2011 14:45

See, I can't type either!
